Blazer and Jeans: A Classic Outfit Formula

A blazer and jeans outfit is one of the most versatile and effortless ways to create a polished yet relaxed look. This outfit formula works for a variety of occasions, from casual days to business-casual settings, making it a must-have combination in any wardrobe.

The beauty of this formula is that you can put it together using pieces you already own, and if you need to fill any gaps, I’ve curated recommendations in a range of price points and sizes.

How to Style the Blazer and Jeans Outfit Formula

You’re going to start with your base—that’s the essence of a formula: a structured format where you can effortlessly plug in pieces to create a complete outfit. In this example, we’re starting with a navy blazer. I chose navy because it functions as a neutral and flatters most skin tones, but you can easily swap it for black or any shade in the brown family. And unlike actual math, my formulas are flexible!

1. Choose the Right Blazer

A structured blazer is the easiest way to elevate your look. Choose one that complements your personal style. I’ve rounded up a few favorites, but the one featured here is from Ralph Lauren—a splurge at $345 (and it has plus sizes up to a 24 here). Honestly, I’m using it because it worked best in the flatlay!

My top recommendations are the Diana Blazer from Tuckernuck for $298 and the Scuba Captain’s Convertible Blazer from Quince. The Quince option is a standout at $99, made from a comfortable, stretchy double-knit fabric.

2. Select the Perfect Tee

A great tee keeps this outfit formula effortless. Opt for a crewneck style to complement the blazer’s lapel—a V-neck won’t work as well here.

When it comes to white tees, I have a hard limit of $50, and my favorite is the COS Clean Cut Regular Tee (above). It’s $45, feels incredible, drapes beautifully for tucking, and holds up well in the wash.

That said, you don’t have to splurge if you don’t want to. Old Navy has an $8 option that gets the job done, and this one from Madewell is another great choice though closer in price to the COS tee.

3. Pick the Best Jeans for Your Shape

J.Crew Slim Straight Jean , $99| MOTHER Heirloom The Hustler Ankle, $238 | Banana Republic Factory’s Girlfriend Jeans, $35

Jeans are the foundation of this outfit, so choosing the right pair is key.

The pair featured in the center is the MOTHER Heirloom The Hustler Ankle—a splurge, but one I personally own and love. Since I wear jeans almost daily, they’re worth the investment for me. The ankle-length cut with a subtle kick at the hem pairs effortlessly with any of the featured shoes.

But of course, I’m here to give you options!

On the left, you’ll find the J.Crew Slim Straight Jean in Dark Rinse—a fantastic choice in regular, tall, and petite sizes (23–37) for $99. These are a perfect example of an updated “skinny” jean: slim without being skin-tight, giving you a polished, modern look.

On the right, I included a more relaxed option: Banana Republic Factory’s Girlfriend Jeans, available in sizes 24–35, including petites, for just $35. The image shows them cuffed, which is a great option, but I personally love the look of them uncuffed for a more streamlined silhouette.

4. Select Shoes

Certain jean styles naturally pair better with specific shoes, so having a mix of both in your closet gives you more versatility.

Slim Straight Jeans + Heels

The J.Crew Slim Straight Jean looks best with a heel, and luckily, slingbacks are still going strong for spring—which I love. The Bianka Slingback from Sam Edelman is a perfect choice: classic yet updated with an interesting heel, and well-priced.

Ankle-Length Jeans + Sneakers

The MOTHER Heirloom The Hustler Ankle (or any similar cut that hits just above the ankle) pairs best with a low-profile sneaker. I’m using these red Reeboks—a $50 find from Kohl’s (!)—but any sleek sneaker will work. I actually did a roundup of the best sneakers for spring last week.

And before anyone asks about “cold ankles”—this is a spring outfit. If it’s snowing, wear something else!

Girlfriend Jeans + Loafers

Girlfriend jeans have a relaxed shape that pairs well with loafers, helping to balance out the chunkiness of the denim. I was inspired by this pair from Coach, which I think are so cool, but at $200, they might not be for everyone. A more budget-friendly option with timeless appeal? The Franco Sarto Cassandra Loafer—just under $60 and a great alternative.

5. Layer in Accessories

Scarf, $15 | Sunglasses, $75|

Accessories make or break your look—they’re the finishing touches that pull everything together.

To complete this outfit formula, I rounded up some of the bestselling accessories from the past few weeks and added a few new finds I think you’ll love.

Fun fact: You can find gorgeous 100% silk scarves on Etsy—yes, they’re back! The stylish 20- and 30-somethings in NYC are wearing them, so it’s time to dig through your closet and see if you have one tucked away. If you need a fresh option, I found a classic silk scarf on Etsy for just $15.

A few more standout accessories:

Sunglasses from Quay at Nordstrom—under $100, with a subtle gold trim that adds the perfect touch of polish.

The Coach Willow Bucket bag—you’ll recognize this from our recent roundup of must-have classic bags.

This “bum bag” from Etsy—I’ve been obsessed with this one for years, and the quality is a solid 10/10.

Statement earrings from Julie Vos—elegant yet bold.

A neutral woven crossbody from Quince—chic and versatile.

A faux tennis bracelet—you can check out my favorite Pavoi jewelry picks here (all under $50!).

Why This Outfit Formula Works

This simple yet chic combination works for all body types and personal styles. Here’s why:

  • Timeless Appeal – The blazer adds structure, while jeans keep it relaxed.
  • Effortless Chic – A classic tee keeps the look casual yet sophisticated.
  • Adaptable for Any Occasion – Dress it up with heels or keep it casual with sneakers.

With the right styling tweaks, this blazer and jeans outfit works year-round and for multiple dress codes.

Final Thoughts

The blazer and jeans outfit formula is an effortless, fail-proof way to look chic and put-together every day. Whether you’re dressing for work, travel, or casual days out, this formula allows for easy customization while keeping your wardrobe timeless and functional.

So excited Outfit Formulas are back! They were/are my favorite feature! I like to use my closet app to remake them out of my stuff and they really help to see where the “holes” are. And it’s fun! On this one I’d choose a single breasted jacket because I’m petite and double breasted swallows me. But that’s the beauty of these formulas!
