Outfit Formula: White Jeans – A Chic Spring Staple for Women Over 40

White jeans are a timeless spring and summer essential—and one of the most versatile pieces you can own. Whether you’re meeting a friend for lunch, heading to a casual meeting, or enjoying a weekend out with family, a great pair of white jeans can make you look instantly polished with minimal effort.

The key to styling them is balance: pairing the bright, crisp base with soft, neutral tones and classic accessories creates an outfit that feels fresh, modern, and flattering—especially for women over 40.

The beauty of this outfit formula is that it works with pieces you likely already own, and if you’re looking to fill in any gaps, I’ve curated recommendations at a variety of price points and inclusive sizes to help you get the look with ease.

How to Style White Jeans

Kick Out Crop Jeans from Madewell, $126

You’re going to start with your base—this is the foundation of any outfit formula. Think of it as a structured approach that makes mixing and matching effortless while keeping your look cohesive and polished. In this example, we’re starting with a pair of white jeans.

I chose white jeans because they are a timeless spring and summer staple. They instantly freshen up your wardrobe, can be dressed up or down, and work beautifully with a wide range of colors and textures. Whether you’re pairing them with sneakers for a casual day out or dressing them up with a block heel and blouse for a lunch date, white jeans are endlessly versatile.

Featured above are the Kick Out Crop Jeans from Madewell. I chose them for their updated fit, seasonal style, and inclusive size range, offering “regular,” plus, petite, and tall options. (Note: I’m 5’10,” and the tall inseam was way too long for me!) They’re easy to style and made from a thick enough fabric that you don’t have to worry about transparency. I want you to find a pair that fits your body shape, lifestyle, and budget.

You might already have a pair you love in your closet. If you’re still searching for your perfect fit, be sure to check out The Best White Jeans That Aren’t See-Through where I rounded up highly recommended options at different price points.

1. Choose the Right Fit

MOTHER Fairest of Them All The Rambler Zip Ankle, $227 | Madewell Kick Out Crop Jeans, $126 | Old Navy High-Waisted Vintage Slim Jeans, $30.99 | NYDJ Marilyn Straight Jeans in Plus Size, $109

When it comes to white jeans, fit is everything. We’re looking for that ideal blend of style, comfort, and coverage—the kind that makes a pair feel truly wearable for real life.

A structured fabric with just a touch of stretch will keep your jeans looking polished while giving you the ease and flexibility you want for all-day wear. White denim should feel substantial enough to provide confidence without feeling heavy or stiff.

Below, you’ll find a curated mix of white jeans at a range of price points, thoughtfully chosen for their quality, opacity, and size inclusivity. There’s something here for everyone, with options available in regular, petite, plus, and tall sizes.

If you’re looking to update your wardrobe with a fresh pair of white jeans this season, here are a few standout options at different price points and fits. Any of these styles will work perfectly with the outfit formula we’re building today.

2. Collect Your Shoes

Veja Esplar Bicolor Leather Low-Top Sneakers, $130 |The MX Sandal in Saddle Calf by Margaux, $228 | J.Crew Factory Woven Heeled Sandals in Gold, $89

You may notice that we repeat certain items throughout the season—and that’s intentional. This is how we really shop. When I worked with private clients, if I found a great shoe that clients were loving, I showed it to everyone. No reason to reinvent the wheel when something works.

So while some of these picks may look familiar, that’s the point. These are versatile, well-made staples that can be styled multiple ways, and chances are, you already have something similar in your closet.

For styling white jeans, I recommend having three go-to options: a low-profile sneaker, a refined sandal, and a polished heel. Each one brings a different feel to your outfit and helps extend your wardrobe without adding clutter.

In these formula we’re working with the following:

Sneaker: Veja Esplar Bicolor Leather Low-Top Sneakers, $130
Clean and classic, these leather sneakers offer just enough contrast with their subtle bicolor detailing. They’re an elevated, eco-conscious choice that pairs perfectly with white jeans for a casual, put-together look. Great for travel, running errands, or weekend wear.
Whatever sneaker you use here, just be sure it’s a low-top. The proportions they create work best with any shape jean that hits around the ankle.

Refined Sandal: The MX Sandal in Saddle Calf by Margaux, $228
Understated and incredibly chic, these flat sandals offer just the right amount of polish. Yes, they’re a splurge—but if you’re focused on building a “less is more” wardrobe and prioritizing quality over quantity, they’re worth considering. I have a similar (now discontinued) version from Tuckernuck, and I’ve worn them constantly for the last four summers. You’ll absolutely get your cost-per-wear out of them.
Looking for a similar look for less? Steve Madden has a version under $60 that’s a great dupe.

Gold Heel: J.Crew Factory Woven Heeled Sandals in Gold, $89
Add a little shimmer and elevate your outfit with these woven gold heels. The stacked heel is walkable, and the texture adds just the right amount of interest to a simple white jeans look. Perfect for spring dinners, casual parties, or anytime you want your outfit to feel a bit more special.
These definitely add a bit of glam—but in reality, I’d probably wear something like this to a nicer dinner at the beach with my gold Tory Burch Miller sandals (because let’s be honest, that’s more my speed).

3. Tops and Sweaters

J.Crew Heritage Cotton Rollneck Sweater, $98 | Faherty Chambray Button Down $148 | Boden Linen Shell Top in Starboard Blue Painted Dot, $90

Honestly? Everything goes with white jeans. That’s what makes them such a wardrobe staple. But since we’re being intentional with this outfit formula, let’s focus on a few style directions that always work—and help keep your closet feeling cohesive.

In my mind, there are three main ways to style the top half of a white jeans look:

1. Monochromatic
You can’t go wrong with a soft, tonal palette. Think ivory, oatmeal, pale blush, or soft grey layered with white. It creates an instantly elevated look that feels effortless and sophisticated.

Try this:
👉 J.Crew Heritage Cotton Rollneck Sweater in Ivory, $98

2. California Chic / Nautical
There’s some crossover here—both styles are relaxed but polished, built around stripes, denim, chambray, and soft knits. I love the casual elegance of this look. It feels unfussy but still intentional.

Try this:
👉 Faherty Chambray Button Down in Mid Wash, $148

3. Pop of Pattern or Color
A floral blouse, a crisp coral top, or even a bold graphic print adds personality and makes your white jeans the perfect neutral base.

Try this:
👉 Boden Linen Shell Top in Starboard Blue Painted Dot, $90

4. Layer in Accessories

Tuckernuck Raffia Stevie Crossbody, $128 | Talbots Metalic Leather Trim Clutch, $169 plus 30% Off |Mark & Graham Classic Leather Tote, $112 | Ana Luisa Sloane Earrings, $65 | Jenny Bird Classic Hoops, $98–$118 |Tuckernuck Pearl Studs, $58

Finally, we layer in accessories—and this is where the outfit really comes alive. Our focus is always on blending style with function, and the right accessories can elevate your basics and make everything feel more intentional.

Earrings
We’re featuring three versatile pairs, all of which you can wear interchangeably—but I personally like them best styled the way we’ve used them here:

  • Ana Luisa Sloane Earrings, $65 – Available in gold, pavé gold, and silver. These feel super chic and modern with just the right amount of sparkle. A great everyday update.
  • Jenny Bird Classic Hoops, $98–$118 – Available in small, medium, and large, and in both gold and silver. A timeless staple that goes with everything.
  • Tuckernuck Pearl Studs, $58 – A reader favorite this season. I love how they play off the polka dot shell without being too literal or matchy.

Bags
You’ve seen two of these before—and for good reason. They’re versatile, stylish, and have been best-sellers with our community. The third is a new option that’s currently on sale and worth checking out.

Talbots Metalic Leather Trim Clutch, $169 plus 30% Off
Sleek and sophisticated with combining natural elelents with a bit of glam. It adds a little elegance to your outfit and transitions beautifully from day to evening.

Tuckernuck Raffia Stevie Crossbody, $128
This has been one of the most popular bags with our readers this season, and I love that. It’s the perfect piece you don’t see everywhere, and the raffia texture adds a warm-weather vibe without being too trendy.

Mark & Graham Classic Leather Tote, on sale for $112
Structured and functional, this is one of those workhorse bags that’s still polished enough for everyday wear. Plus, you can monogram it, which you know I love.

I always love the look of white jeans. I am pear shaped and the recommendation is always that pear shaped women should stick with dark pants that do not highlight the bottom half. They say to wear brights And interesting designs on the top to draw the eye upward. What do you think? How can we pears wear white jeans and look good?

I always look forward to your weekly blog. Thanks Megan!

I have always loved your outfit formulas! I really like learning the insight and intention that goes into your choices. I’ll add that with my dark winter coloring I’ve struggled with wearing my darker jewel tones in summer. I hit on white jeans and third pieces as the answer and this post validates that thought! So while I’ll admire the monochrome outfit on others, I’ll definitely grab my darker denim shirt and a patterned top in my color that also has white in it to echo the jeans. White Sambas, white sandals and silver heels will complete my cool toned looks. You’ve inspired me to get to work creating outfits on my closet app!

I love seeing these options. Could you suggest any closed toed shoe alternatives to substitute instead of the two pairs of sandals? I don’t wear sandals and would love some ideas of shoes to wear in addition to my beloved white sneakers.

Great ideas. White jeans always look sharp but I haven’t worn white jeans since gaining weight. I feel like they are “big-ifying." What do you think of white jeans if over 70 (that doesn’t really matter, does it?), 5’4” and a size 16??
