Outfit Formula: The Ballet Flat

In today’s Outfit Formula, we’re talking about The Ballet Flat.

They are “back,” but, I never stopped wearing them. As a tall girl, I’m 5’10, I don’t always want to add more height to my frame.

But I find the majority of ballet flats to be uncomfortable. And style-wise, they’re not always the most flattering.

The standard rounded toe does little to elongate the leg, making an otherwise stylish outfit look frumpy.

So I look for a pair that fits well and has a pointed or almond-shaped toe box.

My personal favorites are from Rothy’s. I have six pairs and counting.

I have a wider foot and find when I size up, they fit perfectly. I appreciate how they let your foot breathe and that you can wash them.

For this look, I’m working with their flat, The Point, in “Camel Cap-toe.”

We’ll see this cap-toe style, inspired by classic Chanel flats, at all price points this season, in flats, sling-backs, and pumps.

Wear them like a neutral.

If the Rothy’s aren’t for you, consider something like this style from the brand French Sole.

Their flat, the Passport, gets rave reviews for fit and comfort. If you order, go down a half size. They sell for about $200.

And if you’re okay with a solid color, Vionic makes a stylish and comfortable flat that our readers swear by.  It has arch support and is available in medium, wide and narrow sizing.

Ok, now let’s dive into today’s formulas.

Outfit Formula: The Ballet Flat

Camel and Black Ballet Flats with either black leggings, white tank, white oversized boyfriend shirt, camel leather handbag, gold sphere studs, and a silk scarf, or with slim straight jeans, cream cotton sweater, tortoise headband, gold chain necklace, and a leather shoulderbag

Key Piece: Rothy’s The Point Cap-Toe Flat, $145 Outfit Formula #29High Waist Pocket Leggings, $79 | Racerback Tank | Oversized Boyfriend Shirt, $35 | Leather Handbag, $299 | Scarf, $9 | Bold Sphere Studs, $78 Outfit Formula #30Slim Straight Jeans, $40 | Cotton Sweater, $39.50 | Shoulder Bag, $395 |  Curb Chain Necklace, $350 | Tortoise Headband, $9.50

The thing to remember about working with a ballet flat is that they look best with slim or straight-leg pants. A wide, bootcut or flare bottom will overwhelm it.

I’m sharing two formulas today, first with leggings as a comfortable travel day outfit.

Outfit Formula #29

We’re reusing the Zella leggings from last week’s formula. They are $80, but they wear so well. I’ve had pairs for years. But, of course, you don’t need to buy a new pair if you have a favorite at home.

The plus size option is on sale for under $50.

Then, we’re taking the razor back tank from Amazon’s The Drop (a bestseller from August) and using it as an under-piece.

I’ve been hearing from so many readers who are wearing this on repeat. Available in XXS – 5X.

On top, we’re layering this oversized boyfriend shirt from Old Navy. It’s a bit sheer, but that doesn’t matter since we have a solid tank underneath.

Available in regular, tall, and petite for only $35. I scooped up a few

Finally, because this is for a day on the road or at the airport, I found this work bag from Mark & Graham that fits your laptop, book, and all your essentials.

For accessories, we have loved this inexpensive scarf from Amazon and these simple 14K gold studs from our Mejuri round-up

Outfit Formula #30

For today’s second formula, we’re working with go-to straight-leg jeans. Our best-selling pair from Old Navy is featured above, priced at $40 with an additional 30% off right now. Available in regular, tall, and petite in 00 – 30

Then, for anyone that needs a cotton sweater, J.Crew Factory has this $40 option in several colors in XXS – 3X

This Coach bag is lovely if you’re looking for a classic, everyday shoulder bag. Available in a range of colors, we’re featuring the Saddle above.

Finally, for accessories, this chain necklace from our Mejuri round-up fills the v-neckline beautifully. And then a slim tortoise headband, because these bad boys are back too.

I love Rothy’s The Square. It’s a tiny bit roomier than The Point and has a cap toe option as well.
