Why I Hate Capris (and What to Wear Instead)

Of all the articles I’ve ever written, this one about my contempt for capri pants, written on a whim several years ago, is my most popular.

Today, it’s been read by over one million women.

And it gets people fired up.

Which was never my intention.

If you’ve been part of our community for any amount of time, you know I really don’t care what you wear.

Instead, I like to give suggestions and advice that help you find what works best for you.

And I really loathe this influencer culture of promoting an item one season only to talk about how it’s “dated” the next.

But the capri pant is the exception.

It is the most unflattering, frumpy-dumpy, ugliest piece of clothing designed for women in modern history.

Here’s the deal.

Retail doesn’t care about you.

Especially if you’re a woman over 40.

No one is sitting in an office, deciding on the next season’s inventory assortment, asking themselves:

Is this the best option for our customers?

Is it flattering?

Will it work with what they already have?

Will she feel confident in it?”

They are not trying to advocate for us.

But I am.

The basis of my entire business is to sort through the mess you see in stores and online and highlight the best options each season while providing inspiration and practical tips.

And capris are a mess.

I get a lot of questions from readers in the spring and summer, like, “why do capris feel so awkward on?” and “why are they so unflattering on me?”

So, today, let’s talk why capris are the worst and then take a look at better alternatives.

Why I Hate Capris (And What to Wear Instead)

Why I Hate Capris (and What to Wear Instead)
How terrible.

Why I Know What I’m Talking About

I spent the first half of my career in corporate retail as a buyer before becoming a personal stylist and founding The Well Dressed Life.

My first buying job out of college was at Charming Shoppes, the parent company of stores like Catherine’s and the now-closed Fashion Bug.

I worked as an assistant-to-the-assistant buyer in the bottoms department.

Then I became a buyer for a small high-end boutique and eventually landed at QVC before starting my company.

But it was at Charming that, despite it being my least glamorous gig, I learned about garment construction.

Our department focused on casual fabrics, including denim and twill.

We sourced merchandise from manufacturers and also produced items in-house.

Before approving final runs, we had to check the production samples’ fit to ensure they met quality standards.

I was responsible for keeping all the samples organized and worked with the fit model and design teams to ensure the fit was correct.

Granted, Fashion Bug wasn’t exactly known for its high-quality standards.

If it didn’t fall apart in the wash and met size standards, you could get something passed.

And we sold a ton of capris.

But our head of QA was well-trained and often frustrated that items were ordered despite looking awful.

Because of that experience and subsequent relationships with tailors and clothing makers over the years, I learned the nuances between good and bad design and why an item is sometimes inherently unflattering from a construction standpoint.

Why I Hate Capris

Today, to help prove my point, I purchased two pairs of capris.

One in denim and one in khaki, both sold as “capris” for about $40 each from a mainstream retailer.

There are a lot of angry comments below about how these are not capris.

Let me assure you, they are.

It says so on the label.

These were being marketed and sold as CAPRIS.

For context, I am 5’10, and I wear a solid size 8.

I paired them with a simple white tee, a long necklace, and wedge sandals to make them look as neutral and presentable as possible.

And for the comments telling me sneaker would make all the difference: false. Nothing would look worse.

They both look so terrible on me; I can’t believe I’m putting these up for all the internet to see.

Why Capris Are Ill-Fitting

Why I hate Capris (and what to wear instead)
Horrible fit and collapsing in the back.

Capris were a notoriously challenging style to get through the QA approval process because their design is inherently imperfect.

Technically speaking, most capris are made with a leg opening that becomes too narrow too quickly, almost like there is not enough runway, as it moves down the leg, making them bunch at the knee and hug the thighs (see above).

The narrowness of the leg doesn’t allow the material to fall correctly, so the back of the pants “collapses.”

“Collapse” is the technical term used to explain what happens when a pant is constructed in a way that makes the back of the pant bunch and lay on the back of your legs.

Why Capris Are Not Flattering

Why I hate Capris (and what to wear instead)
Atrocious and embarrassing.

They do the body, regardless of shape or size, no favors from a proportion standpoint.

In all of our style-related posts, I try to teach readers how to create the most flattering, proportional look, regardless of your personal style, body type, budget, etc.

The capri makes this impossible because of where the hem cuts at the leg, usually right through the top to the widest part of the calf, making the legs look stumpy and cutting the line of the body at its most awkward point.

I read somewhere that they make you look like you are standing in a ditch and I couldn’t agree more.

To make matters worse, designers often add ridiculous embellishments that only cheapen the item further, like oversized pockets, cargo straps, zippers, grommets, and cuffs (above).

Aside from doing nothing to enhance your look, the length visually chops off your height, instantly making you look frumpy.

It’s hard to make me look short.

In heels, I’m 6′ tall. Yet, these pants diminish my height significantly.

For my petite ladies, it’s even worse.

If you are trying to dress well, you want to make choices strategically.

Every piece of clothing you wear should either support, enhance or improve the overall outfit.

Capris don’t do any of that.

We can do better.

Why Do Retailers Still Make Capris?

The ugly truth is that capris are cheap pants to make with high margins.

And because they cost little to make, there’s little quality.

Yet women keep buying them because they think they are the only warm weather alternative to shorts.

But there are SO MANY other options that provide the same coverage with infinitely better design.

What To Wear Instead Of Capris

If you are wearing capris because you are not a fan of shorts, you have many other options that more flattering, modern and easier to style.

First of all, if you like shorts by all means, wear them!

And also skirts and dresses are all wonderful options.

But let’s focus on pant options.

Starting on the left with these FIVE star wide-leg linen-blend pants that will hit at our around your ankles.

The pair above is from Old Navy and one of the most popular pants we’ve featured.

They come in various colors and all sizes.

You can see three ways to style them here.

Three Ways to Style Old Navy’s Wide Leg Linen Pants

The next option, also from Old Navy, is a simple, lightweight chino with the same casual vibe as a Capri, but they fit 1000 times better.

Available in all sizes and several fantastic colors

The Difference Between Capri, Cropped And Ankle Pants

The difference is as simple as the inseam.

Typically capris have an inseam of 23″ – 25″, a cropped pant is about 26″ and should hit two to four fingers above your ankle.

And ankle pants have a 28″ inseam and should hit at your ankle.

As you can see, there is a small difference between the three options that make a big difference in fit.

Some of the push back I get when I say to avoid capris is that they “keep you cool.”

To which I say, wear a cropped pant instead of full-length pants.

It’s a difference of about an inch or two and looks a thousand times better.

Of course, retail calls things whatever they want, but these are the standard inseams for each style of pant.

The Bottom Line On Capris

I get a decent amount of negative comments on this post because they think I’m trying to “tell women what to wear.”

Again, I don’t care what you wear.

It’s not that deep.

Certainly not worth getting offended over.

But if you appreciate things like fashion and personal style, we can do so much better than capris.

And if you want to look modern, chic and classic consider some of these alternatives to capris.

I was ready to get all angry because I love capris! Apparently I did not know what capris were and I have been referring to cropped pants as capris Since the beginning of time. I wear cropped pants and ankle pants but never capris. Whew…

It’s about time someone spoke about certain styles of pants that are unflattering. I totally agree with you Meg! Thank you for giving woman other suggestions .

I totally agree! I am older and don’t think shorts are the look for me but capris are totally unflattering as well! And ankle pants are sometimes so long for my short figure I may as well be wearing regular pants! Rarely do I find a pair that works for me. I haven’t found the answer yet but would be interested in hearing if others have.

Oh my goodness! I really need this site. I am one of the worst dressed ever. I'm also petite and overweight and a senior. That makes it really hard. I've been trying more lately to match up what looks better on me. Your advice is really appreciated.

I too dislike capris, I find a skort is comfy and cooler than capris

I agree with the capri. My husband told me recently he does not like the look. I can no longer wear shorts. But my problem with the other length is they remind me of high water pants. I got stuck with that look back in high school, when there was no selection on length. I feel i am stuck with just jeans now.

I guess I just try on pairs until I find the right fit. I actually hate "ankle pants" on everyone. To me it looks like you outgrew your pants and mommy hasn't bought you new ones yet. Crops are ... eh to me. Not short enough, not long enough. I live in the deep south. It's HOT and I can;t wear shorts to work, I'm not wearing ankle pants, but I can wear capris, so I do. Just look for ones with the right cut. Just like having different sizes, there are different styles.

I don't mind capris if they are paired with the right proportion of top and shoe. It has to be purposeful, or it looks dumpy for sure.

What I REALLY hate is that manufacturers think that a 32" inseam should be suitable for all, which with every generation seemingly getting taller, this is patently ridiculous. So many pants come with a 32" inseam and only about a 1/2" hem, so you can't create appropriate length at all. And now it seems that so many dressy pants (suitable for an office environment) clearly only come to the ankle, which just makes you look like you outgrew your pants and haven't bothered to replace them with some proper-length ones. When I want to buy pants, I want ALL the fabric, not your cut 3" off to save money, attempt.

Same with "maxi". Maxi is short for maximum. When I want a maxi dress for summer wear, I don't want it coming to "cropped pant length". It needs to come to at least the top of my foot. Same with bathrobes. It's almost impossible now to get a full length housecoat/bathrobe. What they call a long robe is just to the bottom of the calf muscle. How is that supposed to keep you warm? You need a robe that covers your entire leg.

Manufacturers/designers really need to get a grip, and start making things for average height women, not just for petites. A 33 -34" inseam (plus decent hem size) should not be too much to ask, nor should an accurate interpretation of the words "full-length" and "maxi".

This is an incredible article! Thank you, I have been wondering about why they were a thing but am realizing that it's a terrible fashion mistake! Thank you for the visuals & alternative solutions, overall a really insightful article! Much love <33333

It was a picture that did it for me--I looked 3 sizes bigger in those frumpy capris--I did have one pair that was amazing--denim, fitted properly and triple the cost of the frumpy khaki ones from the sad, sloppy picture--after reading this blog I realize now that the amazing 'capris' were actually really well made crops--makes sense. I'm late 50s and so miss shorts but they are gone forever...I wore only skirts and dresses for several years after that horrible picture...now I wear denim crops a lot in summer and they are far cooler than full length and I feel younger in denim somehow...

Funny! I’ve told my 50 year old daughter that NO WOMAN, not even Heidi Klum, looks good in cropped pants! But I didn’t know why! I’m 75 and even though I live in the Sunbelt where we melt 7 months of the year I won’t go out in public in anything skimpier than ankle pants! Linen is a year round fabric here. Dark colored linen is for fall and winter! Lol

Holy cow you should of kept a tab going on this, we almost all hate capris, lol. I have fat calf’s and skinny ankles, the look is a horror! Cropped for me, long shorts only for golf, I can’t take the heat in summer. Thanks for sharing!

I went to VCU & have a degree in fashion. A simple way to look at capris is it divides your body too much. Visually it splits you in to 3rds. If you must wear them, don’t wear a belt. I’ve tossed all mine.

I have always hated capris, even when they were called 'pedal pushers' back when I was young. At 76, I don't worry as much about what's fashionable, but that doesn't mean I want to wear something I know isn't the least bit flattering. I no longer wear shorts, and I'll leave skinny pants to the young. I'm not wild about ankle pants because, to me, they look like pants that have shrunk. My favorite alternative is a loser leg linen or linen blend pant. I live in Arizona, so long pants can get hot in our days of 100+ weather, so linen is a perfect option, especially if it has a touch of spandex to control the wrinkles. Chinos and knits are another good choice if they are a good quality. Unfortunately, there is too little information or choice out there for women my age. Everything is geared to young women, leading to a closet full of bad decisions, trial and error and frustration for seniors who want to look good. I wish you could recommend or provide good advise for those of us who aren't ready to stop caring about how we look when we go out.

Always hated them and never purchased a pair. My mother knows so she makes sure that my pajamas are even full length.. If you don’t feel comfortable wearing something, don’t wear it just because everyone else is wearing it. Wear what looks good on you, not what is in style. I would love to hear your opinion on the high waisted pants and crop tops.. My opinion is that they looked horrible in the 90’s and look horrible now. High waisted pants make your hips, thighs and stomach look big and don’t compliment your rear. Only a certain body type can look alright wearing a pair of high waisted jeans with a crop top. Not many people have the body.

I just came across this post again and where can’t agree more!! Regardless of height, capris don’t look good on most women because they come down to the widest part of the calf, really unflattering. Capris, cropped pants, and culottes can all be hemmed to where they suit your height and calf and body shape. Do what most European women do, find a tailor or do it yourself, a hem job is $5-$10 depending on where you live. Clothing that is tailored to us specifically look so much better and when you look good, you feel good, even more confident! Isn’t that worth investing in? You cannot tell me that capris are cooler in the summer than cropped pants or culottes. I was in Italy in the 2018 summer when it was 100 Fahrenheit, I was nice and cool in my culottes and I saw very few women in capris to be honest.

Agree! Yes!100%! Especially those among us ‘blessed’ with muscular calves. For years I have purchased straight-leg pants and cut and hemmed them myself to fall just at the bottom of my calf. Slim pants hug my calves, and the last thing I want is to draw attention to them. Thanks for validating my thinking and style decisions.

Oh boy this really made my day one big grin all the way through!! You should get a fashion award for "coming out" and saying what we're too cowardly not to go along with! Capris are definitely not flattering! I will point out two things that capris do do altho not flattering. On a shorter and plumper person they accentuate the curves. 'Nuff said. Here in the Midwest, the capris I've seen the most are the twills or canvas kind that have more ease through the hip and thigh like an extended utility short. Indeed, they end up being just that, a utility pant that is durable, relaxed and cool - what more could a dashing-around in-charge woman want? Yeah, some of the time - but just as often we'd trade it out for something more Fashionable.

I am 5’2 ish and I have never owned a capri pant that was an actual capri. They are always cropped pants on me. Looking at you in these, I see why you say they are terrible. They are! I love cropped pants, but always thought that cropped pants were capris. Bermuda shorts...those qualify as capris on me lol!!

Please do an article on leggings. Talk about ugly. They are ok on my granddaughters who are in college and skinny but I see too many overweight and older adults who wear leggings and should not. I don’t know where this fashion trend came from but it is the worst.

I totally disagree with your comments about capris' being unattractive. If. a person has good legs, capris are very flattering. They fall at the bottom of the knee and display the calfs and the ankles. They are perfect for a hot day, especially for anyone who does not want to wear shorts. Longer pants above the ankles, hide the legs and are not very comfortable on a very hot day. Long pants are good for covering up fat or skinny legs. Capris are good for all age women and are very comfortable and also are presentable for shopping or casual wear out in public.

While I do see your point in what you're saying about capri pants, I disagree with comments that say they look awful on everyone. I've seen some women who look good in them. IMO, most of these women who look alright in them have something in common: they have longer legs to torso ratio (particularly from knee to ankle), are built almost straight up and down and don't have much curves to them at all, have slim calves and slim ankles. They're usually of average height although I've seen some that were petite.

Also the cut of the capris matter too. The ones that look OK are slim cut, slightly tapered at the bottom and hit at slightly below the widest part of the calf. The wide leg cut that flare at the bottom is super ugly. I have a pair from Old Navy that looks pretty cute but I usually wear dresses so it works out. Of course this is just my opinion.

I think you look quite nice in the beige capris, front and back. I didn’t like the denim ones at all. I get what you described regarding capris. I have a few pairs but they don’t fit like your beige pair. Mine fit a bit like trousers with a pressed crease front & back. I feel those creases make all the difference.
