Why I Hate Capris (and What to Wear Instead)

Of all the articles I’ve ever written, this one about my contempt for capri pants, written on a whim several years ago, is my most popular.

Today, it’s been read by over one million women.

And it gets people fired up.

Which was never my intention.

If you’ve been part of our community for any amount of time, you know I really don’t care what you wear.

Instead, I like to give suggestions and advice that help you find what works best for you.

And I really loathe this influencer culture of promoting an item one season only to talk about how it’s “dated” the next.

But the capri pant is the exception.

It is the most unflattering, frumpy-dumpy, ugliest piece of clothing designed for women in modern history.

Here’s the deal.

Retail doesn’t care about you.

Especially if you’re a woman over 40.

No one is sitting in an office, deciding on the next season’s inventory assortment, asking themselves:

Is this the best option for our customers?

Is it flattering?

Will it work with what they already have?

Will she feel confident in it?”

They are not trying to advocate for us.

But I am.

The basis of my entire business is to sort through the mess you see in stores and online and highlight the best options each season while providing inspiration and practical tips.

And capris are a mess.

I get a lot of questions from readers in the spring and summer, like, “why do capris feel so awkward on?” and “why are they so unflattering on me?”

So, today, let’s talk why capris are the worst and then take a look at better alternatives.

Why I Hate Capris (And What to Wear Instead)

Why I Hate Capris (and What to Wear Instead)
How terrible.

Why I Know What I’m Talking About

I spent the first half of my career in corporate retail as a buyer before becoming a personal stylist and founding The Well Dressed Life.

My first buying job out of college was at Charming Shoppes, the parent company of stores like Catherine’s and the now-closed Fashion Bug.

I worked as an assistant-to-the-assistant buyer in the bottoms department.

Then I became a buyer for a small high-end boutique and eventually landed at QVC before starting my company.

But it was at Charming that, despite it being my least glamorous gig, I learned about garment construction.

Our department focused on casual fabrics, including denim and twill.

We sourced merchandise from manufacturers and also produced items in-house.

Before approving final runs, we had to check the production samples’ fit to ensure they met quality standards.

I was responsible for keeping all the samples organized and worked with the fit model and design teams to ensure the fit was correct.

Granted, Fashion Bug wasn’t exactly known for its high-quality standards.

If it didn’t fall apart in the wash and met size standards, you could get something passed.

And we sold a ton of capris.

But our head of QA was well-trained and often frustrated that items were ordered despite looking awful.

Because of that experience and subsequent relationships with tailors and clothing makers over the years, I learned the nuances between good and bad design and why an item is sometimes inherently unflattering from a construction standpoint.

Why I Hate Capris

Today, to help prove my point, I purchased two pairs of capris.

One in denim and one in khaki, both sold as “capris” for about $40 each from a mainstream retailer.

There are a lot of angry comments below about how these are not capris.

Let me assure you, they are.

It says so on the label.

These were being marketed and sold as CAPRIS.

For context, I am 5’10, and I wear a solid size 8.

I paired them with a simple white tee, a long necklace, and wedge sandals to make them look as neutral and presentable as possible.

And for the comments telling me sneaker would make all the difference: false. Nothing would look worse.

They both look so terrible on me; I can’t believe I’m putting these up for all the internet to see.

Why Capris Are Ill-Fitting

Why I hate Capris (and what to wear instead)
Horrible fit and collapsing in the back.

Capris were a notoriously challenging style to get through the QA approval process because their design is inherently imperfect.

Technically speaking, most capris are made with a leg opening that becomes too narrow too quickly, almost like there is not enough runway, as it moves down the leg, making them bunch at the knee and hug the thighs (see above).

The narrowness of the leg doesn’t allow the material to fall correctly, so the back of the pants “collapses.”

“Collapse” is the technical term used to explain what happens when a pant is constructed in a way that makes the back of the pant bunch and lay on the back of your legs.

Why Capris Are Not Flattering

Why I hate Capris (and what to wear instead)
Atrocious and embarrassing.

They do the body, regardless of shape or size, no favors from a proportion standpoint.

In all of our style-related posts, I try to teach readers how to create the most flattering, proportional look, regardless of your personal style, body type, budget, etc.

The capri makes this impossible because of where the hem cuts at the leg, usually right through the top to the widest part of the calf, making the legs look stumpy and cutting the line of the body at its most awkward point.

I read somewhere that they make you look like you are standing in a ditch and I couldn’t agree more.

To make matters worse, designers often add ridiculous embellishments that only cheapen the item further, like oversized pockets, cargo straps, zippers, grommets, and cuffs (above).

Aside from doing nothing to enhance your look, the length visually chops off your height, instantly making you look frumpy.

It’s hard to make me look short.

In heels, I’m 6′ tall. Yet, these pants diminish my height significantly.

For my petite ladies, it’s even worse.

If you are trying to dress well, you want to make choices strategically.

Every piece of clothing you wear should either support, enhance or improve the overall outfit.

Capris don’t do any of that.

We can do better.

Why Do Retailers Still Make Capris?

The ugly truth is that capris are cheap pants to make with high margins.

And because they cost little to make, there’s little quality.

Yet women keep buying them because they think they are the only warm weather alternative to shorts.

But there are SO MANY other options that provide the same coverage with infinitely better design.

What To Wear Instead Of Capris

If you are wearing capris because you are not a fan of shorts, you have many other options that more flattering, modern and easier to style.

First of all, if you like shorts by all means, wear them!

And also skirts and dresses are all wonderful options.

But let’s focus on pant options.

Starting on the left with these FIVE star wide-leg linen-blend pants that will hit at our around your ankles.

The pair above is from Old Navy and one of the most popular pants we’ve featured.

They come in various colors and all sizes.

You can see three ways to style them here.

Three Ways to Style Old Navy’s Wide Leg Linen Pants

The next option, also from Old Navy, is a simple, lightweight chino with the same casual vibe as a Capri, but they fit 1000 times better.

Available in all sizes and several fantastic colors

The Difference Between Capri, Cropped And Ankle Pants

The difference is as simple as the inseam.

Typically capris have an inseam of 23″ – 25″, a cropped pant is about 26″ and should hit two to four fingers above your ankle.

And ankle pants have a 28″ inseam and should hit at your ankle.

As you can see, there is a small difference between the three options that make a big difference in fit.

Some of the push back I get when I say to avoid capris is that they “keep you cool.”

To which I say, wear a cropped pant instead of full-length pants.

It’s a difference of about an inch or two and looks a thousand times better.

Of course, retail calls things whatever they want, but these are the standard inseams for each style of pant.

The Bottom Line On Capris

I get a decent amount of negative comments on this post because they think I’m trying to “tell women what to wear.”

Again, I don’t care what you wear.

It’s not that deep.

Certainly not worth getting offended over.

But if you appreciate things like fashion and personal style, we can do so much better than capris.

And if you want to look modern, chic and classic consider some of these alternatives to capris.

Hi there:) I'm a retired visual designer/creative consultant/stylist. Capri pants have never appealed to me and I totally agree with Megan...almost all of the time capris are very unflattering on most people .....even on most of the models that I have styled in my 18 years working in the television/broadcasting/fashion industry! That being said, there are a few major differences between the proportions/length/construction/quality of the 50's style Capris compared to todays styles. The 50's style capris had a more flattering waistline(higher, slimmer better construction)and the length was more proportional. Todays versions are generally poorly proportioned/constructed....even the more expensive ones have odd proportions. Case in point....do a search for 1950's style Capri pants online and check out actual images from that era...if you absolutely have to wear capris look for a higher/slimmer/better constructed/proportioned waistline and hemline. You will notice that in most of the vintage 50's Capri images almost all the pants have a lower hem so they are considerably more proportionate/flattering than today's styles:)

Agree, agree and agree

I hate capri’s and have for years…I would rather wear long pants and be a little hotter than look like a “stump”

As a 5'4' woman with a shorter inseam pants labeled as capri hit me at a very flattering part of my leg, a few inches above my ankle, where my leg is smaller and do not bunch on me. They tend tend to look more cropped. Cropped pants are more of an ankle length on me. I think if you take into account someone's personal inseam it may be different than on a average or longer inseam.

Right, if a capri is hitting you at or around your ankle, then they are not a capri.

I appreciate your article and agree for my wardrobe. Thank you. Wardrobes are individual. I do value your insight and find your suggestions to be classic which is always in style.

If Megan really doesn’t care at all what we wear….. why be so critical? It almost sounded mean at times. I urge her to consider rewriting the article and stick with suggestions and options.

What you wear makes no difference to me. WHO I care about is women on a journey to feel better about themselves who genuinely want to understand how clothes play a part in how we feel in our bodies and how we show up in the world. Proportion and fit, whether you like it or not, is a massive piece of that puzzle, and learning how to dress our bodies can completely change how we feel about ourselves for the better. My job is to give them honest direction about what works and what doesn't. And I make an informed and straightforward case that you should avoid capris if you don't want to feel frumpy in your clothes. So, am I critical of capris? Sure. But I'm not being mean to anyone.

Hallelujah!! You hit the nail on the head! (Guess that dates me, 71 yrs) I have three pairs bought two weeks ago going back to the store this week! I have a dress pair from last year, never worn! Thought, I have to taper those. Soon, lol. I have not been happy buying a pair of Spring/Summer pants since the days of ELLE! I have every pair of those, in every color, I ever bought! They fit perfectly! Women are still hunting for them on Etsy and any second hand on line sights. How dare the clothing industry NOT pick up that pattern when ELLE went out of business! Just goes to show how clueless they still are!! I obviously haven’t learned, today’s capris are NO different - and deserve to be left on the hanger in the store! On my way to make the return!

Agree with you 💯 Always felt the same about capris and felt great to know that a person in the business of style endorses my thinking too. Never wear the capris I first bought and now alway go for the wide bottom or narrow ankle length pants. For this alone you have gained a new follower. You sure know your business

I also hate capris. I am going on a cruise. I have 2 and will be forced to take them because everyone will have them on. I hate shorts. I love your advise. Also I am an older lady who has arthritis in her ankle and how do you wear sneakers with capri. You can’t. Also I had a nail removed from my left big toe and it has not grown back yet so open toe sandals are out I think

Funny enough, I buy capris with rolled up ends, to then unrol them and wear them as full length pants. I am that short, aparently, that is works for me. That said, I do not like the look of capris on anyone

I hate capris and ankle length pants. Why did they change regular length pants from 31” to 30”. Also I don’t like ankle length. Sometimes it’s hard to find 30” in plus sizes.

Sue

I don’t really like capris either. But I hate ankle pants worse on me. My ankles swell a lot, and that is all you see in ankle pants. What has happened to just a nice pair of regular ladies slacks. I have worked in the clothing industry for 50 plus years. I must say I have never seen such ugly clothes and cheaply made clothes. Especially for the price. Fabrics are not what they used to be.

Thank you for your opinion on capri pants. They are the ugliest garment ever made! I wear dresses all summer. Dresses are much cooler than any pants.

I hate capris paints, too. I always have and everyone keeps telling me I need capris pants bc they’re so stylish—HA. But u dear pressure I bought a pair and hated them. If you want to look frumpy, then capris pants are the ultimate Finally, I have an expert on my side—you.

I couldn’t agree with you more… I wore them on a vacation in Italy and I hated every picture of me in capris for the very reason you mentioned… I looked short and stumpy in them in every foto and I’m average height 5’5”” and weight. When I got home I gave away every pair!

Finally, someone that doesn’t like these hideous items of clothing. I have never seen anyone that could legitimately pull this look off. I am also tall and spent my whole early life in hem facing as growing up, no one made talls. In addition to capris, I detest ankle pants. It reminds me of trying to find pants long enough.

I cannot believe i finally found an article backing up what i have thought my entire life, capris are the worst! My mom calls them Bermuda's, i call them hideous!

Yes, yes and yes! I'm glad you sadi it, 'cause it needed to be said. Capri pants make a woman's feet look bigger, her legs look shorter and her booty look wider! I no longer wear shorts because my skin is getting saggy on my thighs (yuck and heavy sigh) but I still like to be cool in the summer. I wear skorts and summer dresses all the time and never, ever wear capris.

Your article and examples are amazing and empowering!! I’ve known that capris aren’t flattering, and at 5’2” make me look even shorter. But those black yoga capris, I have 7 pairs!! They are so easy and black and stretchy which is great for a mom with a tum and some extra pounds lol 😂 Now that I’m losing that weight, they aren’t fitting anymore! (Hooray!) Time to buy some pants or shorts!! Thank you and goodbye, capris!

Hello , first I hate capris because I’m 4’11’’ and they make me look 2 feet tall any suggestions for me ?

Sue

Tuesday 15th of August 2023

I really enjoyed reading your thoughts about capris. I’m not a fan either. Nothing that hits mid calf is flattering, including dresses and skirts. But I must admit, I really dislike the cropped pants. They remind me of the pre tall size days. They just look like what we called “high water pants”. I wear a lot of skorts as an alternative to shorts, although that doesn’t work for those who are wearing capris to hide their legs.

Gena

Saturday 12th of August 2023

I agree! Capris cut you off at your calf. I'd rather wear shorts, a skirt, or ankle pants. What do you think of 9 inch walking shorts for women over 60? I think they are the same as capris.

Jennifer

Thank you!!! Completely agree!!

Thank for this post! Women don’t look at all sides in the mirror when they wear capris or they would not wear them. I am going to try cropped pants! Thank you!

Thanks...I think capris are passe, but I don't like the short pants either...they remind me of something the dryer shrank...I like Bermuda shorts, but they aren't always appropriate, so dresses for me!
