Outfit Formula: The Faux Leather Skirt

I was down-right delighted when I saw this faux leather skirt from Talbots at the top of our best seller list last week.

Using a classic piece in a statement fabric is one of my favorite ways to elevate an outfit.

And this time of year, as we head into the holiday season, you’ll have lots of opportunities to wear this.

So I thought it would be helpful to create two easy formulas to follow, using other mix and match seasonal basics.

The Faux Leather Skirt

Talbots faux Leather skirt in black

Faux Leather Skirt, $149

I featured this skirt from Talbots, available in regular and petite sizes 2 – 18, specifically for its shape.

These days finding a more conservative style leather-like skirt is a challenge. Most options are tight and short, and the styles I found that I did like were all over $1000.

But this one works. It will hit at or below your knee, is fitted at the waist, and falls into a slim a-line.

If you want something with more movement, I like this $50 option from Banana Republic Factory, available in black and brown, in regular, tall, and petite sizes, 0 -20

Either style will work in the formula below.

Outfit Formula: The Faux Leather Skirt

Merino Turtleneck Sweater, $39.50 |  Knee High Boot, $250 | Black Tights, $18.50 | Woven Bag, $45 |

V-Neck Sweater, $69 Plus Size here | Pumps, $70 | Clutch, $275 | Leather Bracelet, $68 | Knot Stud Earrings, $50

Both looks incorporate similar but different elements.

My first recommendation is to go monochromatic, with head to black.

I firmly believe that all-black will forever be a chic option. And what makes it elegant is weaving in texture to create depth.

Above I’m using an inexpensive turtleneck from J.Crew Factory and would tuck it in.

You can use any fine-knit sweater you prefer, like a crew, boat, or v-neck would all be lovely.

Then, grab a pair of knee-high boots. I love these suede Sam Edelman boots. The suede is essential; it creates that depth we’re looking for and adds some sophistication.

Please note reviews say these are great if you have a wider calf.

You’ll wear them with a pair of opaque, not sheer, black tights. I like the HUE brand

In all likelihood, the hem of the skirt will cover the top of the boot, and that’s fine. Better than fine; it’ll look great.

And then, keeping with our theme of working with texture, this fun woven bag from Amazon

I wore a similar outfit a few years ago. It’s a classic that always works.

Our second outfit follows a similar formula.

First, a fitted top. It doesn’t have to be skin-tight, but it should follow the shape of your body.

I like this faux wrap knit top in burgundy, available at Nordstrom. Available in plus size here.

You do not tuck this in; instead, let it sit on the waistband.

This would also look great with black pants or jeans.

Wear a heel with this skirt to complement the shape and allow the length to hang correctly.

I found these pretty scalloped pumps, also in a suede finish, by Vince Camuto, on sale at DSW

For a bit of personality, I’m using the Clare V Leopard Fold-Over Clutch. It’s a considered purchase but will be well-loved if leopard print is up your alley.

And then, just a couple of pieces of jewelry. As always, wear what you have and layer on if you like.

I found this bracelet with a leather accent that works well, and then classic knot earrings from Kendra Scott for $50

Thanks so much for promoting a faux leather alternative! I'm vegan and love showing non-vegans that the vegan alternative is just as stylish as the non-vegan one.
