What to Buy at Varley

There is a specific kind of day we all know. Maybe you are running errands, meeting a friend for coffee, or sitting on a long flight. You want to be comfortable but you do not want to look like a slob. That is exactly what Varley is for.

Designed with the kind of fit, drape, and detail that make a sweatshirt or a pair of joggers look intentional rather than accidental, this is elevated loungewear. When I wear Varley I feel like a grown up. Like I live in a Nancy Meyers movie and this is just what I wear on a Thursday.

Notes on Varley Care, Sizing and Prices

I do wish they had more natural fiber options, but their signature DoubleSoft fabric is divine. It washes beautifully, I hang dry everything (and at times they’ve been accidentally thrown in the dryer) and it comes out perfectly, it breathes better than you would expect, and the pieces hold their shape wear after wear. I have compared it directly to lower-priced alternatives and it is not the same. There is nothing wrong with the lower priced options, I have them too, but you can feel the difference immediately.

To be clear, their price point is spendy, but if you are moving away from volume and looking for a few elegant pieces that you could build out into a casual capsule, Varley is worth knowing.

Sizing runs true to slightly small. I take a medium in most tops and go between a medium and large in bottoms. I tend to buy medium in the wide leg pants (which are FANTASTIC) and size up to a large in the joggers because they are cut a tad slim.

The below recommendations are shown in neutrals so you can easily see how they work together to create “sets” and variety, however, they are available in beautiful color options.

What to Buy at Varley

Hawley Half-Zip Sweat

This is the piece I recommend first and the one I wear the most. It is an oversized half-zip in DoubleSoft fabric with a panelled neckline, dropped shoulders, and deep cuffs with a banded hem. The half-zip is what elevates it above a standard pullover. It looks considered.

Wear it over the Slim Cuff Pant as a set, or with straight leg trousers and white sneakers for an easy weekend look. I have it in Ivory Marl and reach for it constantly and it is consistently one of the most purchased pieces our readers come back to.

A more sophisticated alternative to the Hawley. The cowl neck and V-shaped front panel give it a dressier, more draped quality, and the drawcord hem lets you wear it loose or cinched depending on your mood.

I picked this up to expand my Varley set and it is a completely different feel. It is the piece you reach for when you want to look like you made an effort without actually making one.

Reena Button Front Sweat

This is an elevated sweatshirt cardigan, with a button front that allows you to wear it open over a tee or closed as a standalone piece.

A subtly cropped DoubleSoft sweat with dropped shoulders and deep cuffs. It is less structured than the Betsy and more casual than the Reena, which makes it a great everyday layering piece. The slight crop means it sits beautifully over the wide leg pant and the slim cuff pant without adding bulk.

This one performed well with our readers in the warmer months last year and it is easy to see why. It is the kind of top you throw on without thinking and still look put together.

Callie Knit Top

This is 100% cotton and the most spring-forward piece in the roundup. It is a contemporary polo in a lightweight open knit with a deep V-neck, dropped shoulders, and short sleeves. The open mesh fabric makes it genuinely breathable and easy to wear as the weather warms up.

It pairs beautifully with the wide leg pant or a pair of their shorts. Would be pretty to take on vacation, or just for a warm weather night out.

This is 100% cotton and it is lovely. The diamond knit texture adds visual interest that a plain tee does not have, and the cotton feels more natural and breathable. Wear it linen trousers, shorts or summer weight jeans.

This one is different and that is why I love it. A sleeveless knit hoodie in 100% cotton with a pointelle stitch texture and adjustable drawcord hood. The open knit makes it feel fresh rather than heavy, and it is a genuinely unexpected layering piece for spring.

Wear it over a tank with a pair of shorts or linen pants you already own.

The Slim Cuff Pant

The perfect bottom to pair with the Hawley, or just as good on its own. Slim and tapered with a cuffed hem, elasticated waistband, drawcord, and pockets. It reads like a tailored jogger, not a sweatpant.

The 27.5 inch inseam is flattering on most heights. If you are petite the 25 inch version is also available. These are my travel pants. They look put-together and feel like pajamas on the plane. This has been on our Best Sellers list since I first started sharing the brand.

Same DoubleSoft fabric, same high rise waist and drawcord as the Slim Cuff, but with a wide leg and an elegant pintuck detail that makes it feel more like a trouser than a sweatpant. It is a genuinely beautiful pant and the one I get the most questions about.

The 28 inch inseam is recommended for 5’3″ and below. A 30 inch version is also available if you need more length. I buy these in a medium and they fit exactly right.

Coulter High-Rise Short 3.5″

Not athletic shorts. These are elevated sweat shorts in DoubleSoft fabric with a high rise and a clean, simple silhouette. Yes they are close to $100 for a pair of shorts, and you do not ever need to spend that on a pair of shorts, but if you are a shopper of the brand I want you to know these fit well and come in great colors.

Depending on the colors you buy you can use these to expand on your other Varley tops and make more “sets.”
