It’s Outfit Formula Week! All week long, we’re sharing easy, repeatable outfit ideas built around warm-weather staples—so getting dressed feels simpler, more stylish, and way less frustrating.
Today, we’re starting with denim shorts—a summer classic that can be surprisingly tricky to style. But once you get the formula right, they become one of the most versatile pieces in your closet.
Let’s get into it.

Denim shorts are a summer staple—but they can also be one of the hardest things to get right. The cut, the wash, the length… it all matters. And once you find the right pair, the next challenge is styling them in a way that feels modern, flattering, and finished.
The good news? When you get the formula right, denim shorts can be one of the most versatile pieces in your warm-weather wardrobe. Personally, I love them.
And the most important factor? How you feel in them. The right pair should feel comfortable, confident, and easy—not like something you’re constantly adjusting or second-guessing.
The beauty of this formula is that you can build it using pieces you likely already own. And if shorts just aren’t your thing, swap in your favorite summer bottom instead. As always, use this as a resource for inspiration—and if you’re looking to fill in any gaps, I’ve rounded up thoughtful recommendations at a range of price points and sizes.
1. Start with Your Favorite Short

Let’s start with the foundation: a great pair of denim shorts. There’s no one-size-fits-all—you want a pair that works for your body, your style, and your comfort level.
I have a few favorites, depending on the look I’m going for.
For this Outfit Formula, I’m using the 4″ High-Rise SuperSoft Denim Utility Shorts from Gap Factory—a reader favorite and an incredibly affordable option at just $22. The fit is relaxed but flattering, and the utility-style pockets add a subtle twist while still feeling classic.
📷 You can see me in them here, I have them in dark wash, light wash and white.
If you want something with a softer, beachy feel, I love the Faherty Organic Cotton Denim Short. The fabric is lightweight, and the slightly frayed hem gives it an easy, laid-back vibe.
For another casual, lived in look, you can’t go wrong with the AGolde Parker Long Short. It’s structured, has a 4.5″ inseam, and is a favorite for a reason—especially if you like a vintage feel without being overly distressed.
And for a polished everyday option, the J.Crew High-Rise Denim Short is a great go-to. It has a 4″ inseam and a clean hem that makes it easy to dress up or down.
2. Pick Your Shirts

2. Pick Your Tops
We styled our shorts with three simple tops. The key here is that you want your pieces to work with the casual nature of denim but still feel intentional—not like you just grabbed whatever was clean.
Because the weather is warm and we’re wearing fewer layers, it’s important to find pieces that add interest without adding weight. Whether it’s a subtle texture, a structured neckline, or an open weave, these small details help complete the outfit—so it feels easy but still pulled together.
Each of the tops below adds just enough shape, texture, or coverage to elevate the look without overthinking it.
- Look 1: Embroidered Tank + Gauze Button-Down
- J.Crew Embroidered Tank Top: Lightweight and detailed enough to wear on its own.
- GAP Gauze Button-Down Shirt: Worn open as a layer for light coverage or added interest—perfect if you want to cover your arms or just complete the outfit.
- Look 2: Long Sleeve Linen Blend
- Madewell Linen-Blend Shirt in Red Stripe: One of my favorite ways to wear shorts is with a long-sleeve top. It balances the proportions without feeling too heavy—just make sure it’s breathable like this one.
- Look 3: The Classic Tee
- Abercrombie Vintage Soft Tee: A simple white tee that always works. This one’s soft, flattering, and slightly fitted. It runs a little small, so I recommend sizing up.
3. Add Simple, Go-To Shoes

Some basic summer shoes are all you need. You don’t need a huge rotation—just a few well-chosen pairs that work with everything.
Here, I’m featuring three that check all the boxes: an elevated flip-flop, a classic white sneaker, and an updated take on Birkenstocks. Each pairs effortlessly with denim shorts and adds a different feel to the look.
- Elevated Flip-Flop: A minimal, sleek option with a slim sole and leather finish. These are perfect when you want something easy but still polished. From Dolce Vita these are Barty Sandals Ice Blue Leather – pretty.
- Classic White Sneaker: A clean, low-profile white sneaker is a warm-weather essential. Comfortable, versatile, and a great way to keep your outfit casual but intentional. These are the Lucky Brand Divahna Sneaker from DSW and just under $50.
- Updated Birkenstock: Whether it’s a softer color, a sleeker strap, or a platform sole—modern Birks are everywhere right now. They’re comfortable and on-trend, and they balance the relaxed vibe of denim shorts perfectly. Featured are the Arizona Big Buckle Slide Sandal.
4. Accessories Make the Outfits

When your outfit is as simple as denim shorts and a top, accessories are what make the difference. They add texture, balance, and a little personality—without weighing things down.
Let’s see how it all comes together:
How to Wear Denim Shorts Three Ways

I love how these looks came together. They’re easy, wearable, and full of little details that make them feel styled—not overthought.
The accessories we used are super versatile, too. You can wear them here, and then mix them into a million other outfits.
And with the striped tee, we kept things classic: simple gold hoops, a delicate necklace, and a Ralph Lauren baseball cap. Easy, timeless, and effortlessly cool.
For the embroidered tank, we added a simple set of gold bracelets—just $35 for a set of five. I love how the texture plays off the embellishment on the top without competing with it.
With the red striped linen sweater, we’re using the Riley Polarized Acetate Sunglasses from Quince—a total steal at $55—and the Monica Vinader Kate Young Gemstone Link Stud Earrings in Tiger’s Eye. They are stunning in person. Don’t forget to use our exclusive discount code for 20% off.
