What to Buy at the Sephora Sale: 20 Beauty Products Every Woman Over 40 Should Know About
If you’ve been inside a Sephora lately, you know the place has been taken over by tweens in PARKE sweatshirts who know more about skincare than most of us did at thirty.
No shade. I love them, and honestly, I admire their enthusiasm. They remind me of myself at that age, only with much better products and bigger budgets. I was spending my babysitting money at Rite Aid, and I would have been in heaven with the options they have today.
But between the crowds, the endless new launches, and the sheer number of products, shopping at Sephora can feel completely overstimulating. It’s enough to make you wonder if there’s anything left in there for us, their mothers.
Well, there is. Quite a lot, actually.
Sephora still carries some of my favorite beauty brands, along with excellent makeup, skincare, and haircare products that are absolutely worth our attention. You just have to know where to look.
And with the Sephora Savings Event happening right now, this is a great opportunity to stock up on products you already love or try something you’ve had your eye on.
For this year’s guide, I went back through our reader favorites, looked at which of my recommendations you’ve consistently purchased, and compared those products with what’s currently available at Sephora. I also included a few newer finds that caught my attention.
The result is 20 beauty products worth knowing about, from longtime favorites to newer discoveries, with recommendations for different skin types, budgets, and beauty routines.
And the timing couldn’t be better because as of today, Tuesday, November 3, everyone in Sephora’s Beauty Insider program can shop the sale.
Here’s how the savings work:
- Rouge members: 20% off
- VIB members: 15% off
- Beauty Insiders: 10% off
- All members: 30% off Sephora Collection
Use code ALLONSALE at checkout. Membership is free, so even if you don’t regularly shop at Sephora, you can sign up and receive the 10% discount. The sale runs through Monday, November 9, with a few exclusions (gift cards, for example) and per-order quantity limits on brands like Dyson and The Ordinary.
You certainly don’t need all twenty products. But whether you’re replenishing your favorites, looking to update your makeup bag, or getting a head start on holiday gifts, I’ve done the digging to help make your Sephora shopping a whole lot easier.
Let’s get into it.

Skincare and Body Care Worth Buying at Sephora
1. hanni Splash Salve In-Shower Body Moisture Treatment

Let’s start with one of the biggest reader favorites of the last year, and one of mine, too.
hanni Splash Salve is an in-shower moisturizer, which is exactly what it sounds like. You smooth it onto wet skin right before you step out, give it a quick rinse without rubbing, and pat dry. The oils and butters (shea, jojoba, and coconut) stay behind, so skin feels soft without a separate lotion step.
It’s divine, especially in the winter, when keeping up with body lotion can feel like another chore. This way you moisturize while you’re already in the shower.

2. YISE Beauty Skin Glow SPF 30 Tinted Sunscreen Primer

This is one of my favorite recent beauty discoveries.
YISE Beauty, Molly Sims’s line (it was originally spelled YSE), makes some really interesting products, and the Skin Glow SPF 30 Primer is a standout.
It’s a tinted primer with chemical SPF 30 that adds a lovely bit of radiance and softly blurs texture, so makeup goes on more smoothly. It also contains niacinamide, which can help improve the look of uneven tone and dark spots over time, and hyaluronic acid for hydration.
I’ve also been enjoying YISE’s Xtreme Glow Dewy Peptide Plumping Serum underneath it. And while the primer has SPF, I still put on a layer of my beloved EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46 first (it isn’t part of the sale).

3. Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask

I have already gone through six of these this year alone. The Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask is one of those products I buy in multiples so I always have it on hand.
The Jet Lag Mask is a rich, creamy treatment with ceramides that works as both a mask and a moisturizer, designed to help dry, dehydrated skin feel softer and more comfortable.
Despite the name, you don’t have to be traveling to use it, although it’s my go-to when I travel. You can apply it as a moisturizing mask when your skin feels particularly dry, or use a thinner layer as part of your regular skincare routine.
Reach for it when you want something richer than your everyday moisturizer without overhauling your routine.

4. rhode Glazing Milk

I completely dismissed Hailey Bieber’s rhode when it first came out, and I was wrong. The brand sent me the Glazing Milk, I was delighted by it, and I’ve since bought it on my own.
It’s a lightweight, milky facial essence made with a trio of ceramides, which help hydrate the skin and reinforce its natural barrier.
You apply it after cleansing, before your moisturizer. It gives the skin an extra layer of hydration without the heaviness of another cream.
I like the idea of using something like this before makeup, especially if foundation tends to cling to dry patches or your skin starts feeling tight throughout the day.
It’s not a replacement for moisturizer, but if your skin could use more hydration without another heavy layer, it’s a good place to start.
While you’re there, I’m also a fan of rhode’s Pocket Blush in Candy Apple, a pearly warm red.

5. Salt & Stone Bergamot & Hinoki Body Wash

Salt & Stone’s Bergamot & Hinoki Body Wash makes an ordinary shower feel like a little moment for yourself.
It’s a skin-softening gel body wash with seaweed extracts and hyaluronic acid, and a beautiful, sophisticated fragrance. Bergamot brings a fresh citrus note, while hinoki adds a woody quality that keeps it from smelling overly sweet.
This is the sort of thing I enjoy giving as a gift, too. It’s useful, it feels a little indulgent, and it’s something people might not buy for themselves at full price.
If you enjoy a really good-smelling shower product, this one is worth a look.

6. Salt & Stone Lily & Yuzu Extra-Strength Deodorant

While we’re talking about Salt & Stone, I also wanted to include the Lily & Yuzu Deodorant because it’s another product our readers have been purchasing consistently.
The scent is a fresh floral brightened with yuzu, so it smells clean rather than sweet.
It’s an extra-strength, aluminum-free deodorant that uses prebiotics to help neutralize odor. The brand says it lasts up to 48 hours, though I still put it on every day.
I also layer it with the Lily & Yuzu Body & Hair Fragrance Mist, and together they smell so fresh and clean.

Haircare That’s Actually Worth the Money
7. Crown Affair The Hair Towel

Listen, $60 for a hair towel sounds ridiculous, but it works so well.
The Crown Affair towel is a waffle-knit microfiber that soaks up water quickly, so you can blot and wrap instead of rubbing wet hair, which is when it’s most prone to breakage.
I bought two so there’s always one ready for me and one for Vivi. I find it cuts my drying time in half, which makes a huge difference in how fast I can get out the door.
It’s also a great gift for the woman in your life who has everything.

Let’s Talk About Chris McMillan
If you’ve been reading for a while, you already know I’m a big fan of Chris McMillan’s haircare line.
I’ve shared a full review of the products I use, and it’s been so much fun seeing how many of you have tried them.
What I appreciate is that the products serve different purposes. You don’t need to buy the entire collection. You can pick the one or two that address what you’re trying to accomplish with your hair.
Here’s how the five differ at a glance. The blowdry spray, balm, hairspray, and mousse also protect against heat up to 450°F, which is useful if you blow-dry or use hot tools.
- The Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray: frizz control and shine while you blow-dry
- The Hair Styling Balm: light hold and definition, on damp or dry hair
- The Major Shine Hairspray: flexible, brushable hold
- The Hair Mousse: volume and body, especially for waves and curls
- The Smooth and Tame Hair Wand: flyaways and baby hairs, wherever you are
8. Chris McMillan The Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray

If you’re only going to try one product from Chris McMillan, this would be my first recommendation.
The Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray is made to control frizz, add shine, and create a smoother finish when you blow-dry your hair.
Use it on damp hair before you blow-dry, combing it through so every section is covered. It does its best work with a dryer and a brush, not sprayed onto dry hair. If humidity tends to undo your blowout by lunchtime, this is the one to try.

9. Chris McMillan The Hair Styling Balm

This is such a versatile product, and I’ve mentioned before how differently we use it in our house.
I have straight hair and use it for a little control and definition, while my daughters have used it to help define their curls.
It’s a lightweight balm with light hold that tames frizz and adds definition without a crunchy or stiff finish. You can work it through towel-dried hair to bring out natural texture, or smooth a little over dry ends.

10. Chris McMillan The Major Shine Hairspray

I think a good hairspray is an underrated beauty product.
You want your hair to hold its shape, but you also want to be able to move it, touch it, and run a brush through it without feeling like you’ve created a helmet.
The Major Shine Hairspray gives you flexible, buildable hold and shine, and you can brush through it. It also offers heat protection, so you can mist it on before using a curling iron or hot rollers.
That makes it a good everyday hairspray, especially if you like a little volume or curl but don’t want everything frozen in place.

11. Chris McMillan The Hair Mousse for Bouncy Volume

If you grew up in the eighties or nineties, you may have complicated feelings about hair mousse. Thankfully, formulas have come a long way.
This one is an airy mousse that builds volume and body, and it’s designed to enhance natural wave and curl, without the stiff, crunchy finish you might remember.
I’ve shared how I like using a small amount before blow-drying, particularly when I’m looking for more movement and fullness.
It also makes sense if you use hot rollers or Velcro rollers and want a little extra support for your style.
I wouldn’t buy both the mousse and the styling balm unless you have a reason to use both. The mousse is more about body and volume; the balm is more about definition and control.

12. Chris McMillan The Smooth and Tame Hair Wand

This might be the easiest product in the entire Chris McMillan collection to work into your routine.
The Smooth and Tame Hair Wand looks a little like mascara, but you use the small brush to smooth flyaways and those little hairs that always seem to pop up around your part or hairline.
I use it regularly to tame my own flyaways, and now that Vivi is doing cheer, we’re using it every weekend for ponytails.

Now for the fun part.
13. Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Hydrating Face and Under-Eye Concealer

If you’ve followed my beauty recommendations for any length of time, you know I’m a fan of Armani’s Luminous Silk products. This concealer is, without question, the best on the market, in my very humble and not-at-all-professional opinion.
It’s a lightweight, hydrating formula with medium, buildable coverage and a soft, radiant finish. The formula includes caffeine and glycerin, which help the under-eye area look brighter and less puffy.
One of the things I’ve become more particular about with concealer is texture. I want to cover what needs covering, but I don’t want to see a thick layer of makeup sitting beneath my eyes.
This blends beautifully and works just as well around the nose or anywhere else you need a little extra coverage. A little goes a long way.

14. Fenty Beauty Pro Filt’r Fluid Flex Natural Matte Longwear Foundation

Fenty has a new foundation worth talking about. It launched this summer and replaces the original Pro Filt’r Soft Matte, so if that was your foundation, this is its successor.
Fenty calls the finish natural matte, and the formula is built to last: medium, buildable coverage in 50 shades, waterproof, and made to resist creasing, sweat, and transfer.
But don’t let the word matte scare you off. When I first put it on, I was stunned by how beautiful it looked. It seemed to float on top of my skin and made it look even and glowy, but still like my skin.

15. Fenty Beauty Fluid Flex Foundation Brush 165

And while I’m sounding dramatic, this is hands down the best foundation brush I have ever used.
The Fluid Flex Foundation Brush 165 has dense, wavy synthetic bristles and a wide, scooped shape designed to pick up just the right amount of foundation and blend it quickly. Fenty suggests swiping to spread one pump, then stippling (pressing the brush into the skin) to build coverage where you need it.
With a matte or long-wearing foundation, application really does make a difference. Too much product can look heavy, especially around the nose, mouth, and areas with fine lines.

16. Armani Beauty Luminous Silk Foundation

Now, on the other end of the foundation spectrum, we have Armani Luminous Silk.
I’ve recommended Luminous Silk for years, and it’s one of those foundations I keep coming back to because of the beautiful, natural-looking finish.
The two are different enough that you could easily love both. Fenty is the long-wear formula, waterproof and transfer-resistant, made to hold up through a long, busy day. Armani has a natural glow finish and adds hydration, so it gives skin a softer, more luminous look and is especially comfortable if your skin runs dry.
Armani updated the formula recently. Sephora now lists it as Luminous Silk Natural Glow Blurring Liquid Foundation, and the new version includes niacinamide and claims up to 24 hours of wear. If you loved the original, try the current version before assuming it will behave exactly like the one you used before.
If you only want one, think about how long you need it to last and how much glow you like. And if neither sounds quite right, my guide to the best foundations for mature skin has more options.

17. PATRICK TA Major Headlines Double-Take Crème & Powder Blush Duo

I’ve recommended this Patrick Ta blush for a few years, and it’s still one of my favorites.
You get a cream and powder blush in one compact, which gives you a few different ways to wear it. Use either formula on its own, layer the powder over the cream for Patrick Ta’s signature double-take finish that lasts longer, or build up the color when you want a little more.
The shades are beautiful, and I love how much you can do with one product. My favorites are She’s a Doll, a bright neutral pink, and She Left Me On Red, a warm red.

18. MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil

A good lip pencil can make a surprising difference, particularly if you prefer a softer, more natural lip look.
The MAKE UP FOR EVER Artist Color Pencil is a creamy, soft-matte lip liner with a precise tip, so it’s easy to follow your natural lip line and keep lipstick from feathering.
I like the idea of using a pencil close to your natural lip color to add a little definition before applying lipstick or gloss.
This one is newer to our reader favorites, so consider it an introduction.

19. Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil Stain

Rare Beauty is another brand that appeals to a wide range of ages, and I’ve recommended its lip products before.
The Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil is a gel-to-oil formula that goes on glossy and leaves a tint behind as the shine wears away.
I particularly like this type of product for everyday makeup when you want a little color but don’t necessarily want to fuss with a traditional lipstick.
I’ve previously shared the shades Hope and Wonder, which are both pretty options if you enjoy softer, wearable lip colors.
Just know that despite the name, this behaves more like a lip stain than a deeply moisturizing lip oil.

20. LAWLESS Forget The Filler Overnight Lip Plumping Mask

The LAWLESS Overnight Lip Mask is a rich lip treatment with shea butter and hyaluronic acid to moisturize, plus a plumping complex the brand says makes lips look fuller and smoother with continued use.
I think lip treatments like this are especially nice during the colder months when lips can get dry and uncomfortable.
You can apply it before bed, but there’s no rule saying you can’t use it during the day as well.

Before You Shop the Sephora Sale
The nice thing about Sephora’s Savings Event is that you don’t have to make a huge purchase to participate.
All Beauty Insider members can shop now through November 9, and you can use your discount more than once during the event.
I’d start with what you already use and love. Replacing an almost-empty foundation, replenishing your favorite hair products, or picking up a few gifts at a discount makes much more sense than filling your cart just because there’s a sale.
And if you’re looking for something new, I hope this list helps you sort through the options.
There’s still plenty at Sephora for those of us who have been buying makeup since long before TikTok existed. We just have a better idea of what works for us now.
Remember to use code ALLONSALE through November 9.
Happy shopping!
