Rare Beauty: Modern Makeup That Flatters Every Age

I first learned about Rare Beauty through my girls, one of the many benefits of being a girl mom. They always seem to know what’s great long before I do, and I love when they introduce me to new brands. If you have teens or college-aged daughters, then you know that Rare Beauty is a favorite.

Once I tried it for myself, I understood why. The line is simple, modern, and beautifully done. The colors are wonderfully inclusive and thoughtfully developed, and everything feels effortless, not overdone. It works just as well for women in their forties and fifties as it does for their teenagers. While my girls love it for its easy, glowy finish, I love it because it works beautifully on mature skin. The formulas don’t cake or settle into fine lines, and everything blends in seamlessly.

There are a lot of celebrity beauty brands out there, and most of them don’t live up to the hype. But a few, like Haus Labs, Fenty Beauty, and Rare Beauty, are genuinely leading the industry with smart formulations and inclusive color ranges. They’re thoughtful and consistent.

Founded by Selena Gomez, Rare Beauty was created to make makeup feel easy, approachable, and inclusive. Gomez, who lives with lupus and has arthritis, wanted to design packaging that’s easy to open and use. The products are vegan, cruelty free, and made to work well on real skin. The brand also gives back through the Rare Impact Fund, which supports mental health services.

I also appreciate that their product lineup isn’t overwhelming. They do what they do well without constantly adding new categories or flooding the market with more of the same. It feels intentional, and it shows in the quality.

So I thought I would share a few of my favorite products from the line, all of which are easy to wear, beautifully formulated, and perfect for everyday makeup.

What to Try First

Soft Pinch Cheek & Lip Trio Makeup Gift Set

If you’re new to Rare Beauty, the Soft Pinch Cheek & Lip Trio Makeup Gift Set is a great place to start.

It includes mini versions of the brand’s most popular blush and lip products, which makes it an easy way to test the formulas before committing to full sizes. The colors are flattering, blend beautifully, and give skin that healthy, natural glow Rare Beauty is known for. It’s also a nice, under-$40 gift idea, perfect as a stocking stuffer or for a niece or granddaughter who loves makeup.

Selena’s Faves Mini Fragrance & Blush Set

And if you have gifts on your mind, another great option is the Selena’s Faves Mini Fragrance & Blush Set. It’s $30 and includes a mini of Rare Beauty’s blush along with Selena’s signature fragrance. Together they make a thoughtful, easy-to-wrap gift for any makeup lover.

Both sets are limited edition, so they’re worth grabbing early if you’re planning ahead for the holidays, they are available at Sephora right now during their sale event.

Another Favorite

Soft Pinch Liquid Contour

If you prefer a little definition without heavy contouring, the Soft Pinch Liquid Contour is beautiful. A lot of times contour can like dirty, but this blends out naturally I really love it for every day.

I’m fair skinned and freckled, and I use the shade Mellow, which adds just enough warmth and dimension without looking muddy or harsh. The texture is lightweight and blends easily, so it feels more like adding natural shape back to your face rather than creating dramatic lines.

If you’ve ever been hesitant about contouring, this product is a great place to start. It gives subtle definition that looks fresh and modern, not overly sculpted.

A Lip Oil That Feels as Good as It Looks

Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil | Mini Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil

The Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil is another standout from Rare Beauty. It gives just enough color while keeping lips soft and hydrated, which is exactly what I want as the weather gets colder.

I’m someone who either goes for a classic red or a very feminine pink, and the shades Hope and Wonder are both beautiful. Hope is that perfect everyday pink that brightens your face without looking too sweet, and Wonder is a soft, wearable red that instantly makes you look pulled together.

You can also try it in a smaller size with the Mini Soft Pinch Tinted Lip Oil, which is a great way to test the formula or keep one in your bag. It’s lightweight, never sticky, and leaves a soft stain as it wears, so you don’t have to constantly reapply. It’s the kind of product that looks good on everyone, at every age.

A Highlighter That Works for Real Skin

Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter

The Positive Light Silky Touch Highlighter is one of my favorite Rare Beauty products.

I appreciate that it’s not one size fits all. It comes in several shades that complement different undertones and skin tones, so you can pick something that looks like your skin, only brighter. I wear Exhilarate, a soft champagne gold that adds just the right amount of radiance without ever looking glittery or metallic.

The formula is silky, buildable, and forgiving, which makes it perfect for mature skin. It gives that healthy, lit-from-within glow that instantly makes your complexion look fresh.

What to Skip

Not every product in the line is a hit for me. I didn’t like the foundation, and there are much better options out there if you’re looking for something that feels lightweight and natural while still covering redness and evening out your skin tone. I’m also not a fan of the gel eyeliner, which can smudge a bit by the end of the day. And while the perfume is pretty, it’s not something I would reach for, though my girls really like it.

Rare Beauty fits the way many of us want to approach beauty now: intentional, uncomplicated, and real. It’s not trying too hard.

If you’re curious, start with one of the sets or the blush. They’re simple, flattering, and proof that good makeup can work for every generation under one roof.
