I’ve spent over twenty years as a personal stylist and I’ve been writing about fashion and beauty long enough to know what’s worth your money and what isn’t. I test everything. But styling products were always my blind spot. Not hair care — I’m fully invested in the good shampoo, the masks, the serums. Styling products specifically. I knew I should be using them. I could see the difference between my hair after a professional blowout and what I managed at home on my own. I just never found a line that made it feel worth the extra step.
This Chris McMillan hair review covers the five products that finally changed that, what each one does, and why this is the first styling line I’d actually tell you to invest in. I don’t mean to be dramatic, but I see no reason to look further.
A little context so you know where I’m coming from. I’m 46 and my hair feels different than it did even a few years ago. Naturally straight, medium thickness, chemically treated, and I use hot tools regularly. My daughters, who are 19 and 16 and have healthy, thick, curly hair, use several of these products too. Very different hair types, same line. I’ll get into that as we go.
Who Is Chris McMillan?
He’s the celebrity hairstylist behind Jennifer Aniston’s “The Rachel” in the early ’90s, one of the most requested haircuts in history, and has been doing the hair of women like Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon, Courteney Cox, and Jennifer Lopez ever since.
He spent four decades working on other people’s hair before putting his name on products. That matters. This doesn’t feel like a brand deal. It feels like someone who actually knows hair finally decided to write it all down and share it with the rest of us.
What Makes This Line Different
One of the things I love most about this line is how simple it keeps everything. You don’t need a shelf full of products. The five I use cover everything, and because they’re designed to work together, you’re not layering competing formulas and hoping for the best. They just work.
Part of that is something called HS3 complex, McMillan’s proprietary ingredient blend that runs through every single product in the line. It provides heat protection up to 450°F, adds shine, and strengthens the hair cuticle. Because it’s the foundation of everything, the products layer beautifully without weighing hair down. It’s a small thing that makes a big difference.

The Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray

This is the one that started it all for me, and if you buy nothing else from this line, buy this.
I’ve basically accepted that my at-home blowouts will never look like a salon blowout. I have a Shark Glossi Blow Dryer Brush that I love, and even with that I couldn’t quite get there. This spray is what was missing. Shake it, saturate damp hair from roots to ends (don’t skip the nape), comb it through, and blowdry with tension. That last part is important.
The result is smoother, shinier hair with serious frizz control and a glossy finish that actually holds. It also smells like an expensive blowout, which is its own kind of joy. This is now non-negotiable in my routine.

The Major Hairspray

I’d been using the same hairspray forever, on autopilot, never thinking about whether it was actually good. And if that wasn’t around I would use whatever was.
This one made me realize what I’d been settling for. It’s a superfine mist that gives flexible, buildable hold without any of that stiff, crunchy finish.
It gives flexible hold you can actually brush through, which matters when you want a full, bouncy blowout rather than something stiff and set. And it leaves hair shiny, which I did not expect from a hairspray.
The Wand

The Wand is a styling stick you swipe directly where you need it.
I reach for it at the end of getting ready to smooth flyaways and tame my ends, which tend to get dry and frizzy no matter what. It gives everything that fresh-cut look and feel without adding any weight or grease. It lives on my vanity and I use it every single day.
The Hair Styling Balm

A silky, serum-like balm you work through damp hair to smooth frizz, define texture, and give hair a more polished finish as it dries. Timing is everything with this one: towel-dried hair is the sweet spot. Too wet and it won’t absorb, too dry and it sits heavy. Get the timing right and the difference is obvious.
My girls all have very curly hair and use this to define their curls. I use it on my straight hair for smoothness and polish. The fact that it works across such different hair types says everything about how well formulated it is.
The Mousse

I know. Mousse. Stay with me. This is nothing like the stiff, crunchy mousse you’re thinking of. It’s light and air-whipped, and it builds real volume without any coating or stiffness. I work a small amount through damp hair before I dry it when I want more body. Don’t overdo it, a little goes a long way. It also works beautifully if you use hot rollers or velcro rollers. And it layers well with the Glassy Smooth Blowdry Spray if you want volume and smoothness at the same time, which sounds like it shouldn’t work but absolutely does.
Don’t use too much, just enought to work through before you blow dry. It’s nice too if you use hot or velcro rollers.
