5 Denim Trends I’m Excited for this Spring

It’s no secret—I’m a denim girl through and through. Jeans and everything that complements them are at the foundation of my wardrobe.

Denim is timeless, effortlessly stylish, and endlessly versatile, making it a staple in my everyday outfits. Whether I’m elevating a casual look with tailored pieces or embracing a laid-back vibe for a busy day, denim is always my go-to.

While denim is essential year-round, spring brings an opportunity to refresh our wardrobes with new takes on classic styles. This season’s trends strike the perfect balance between modern and wearable, making them ideal for women over 40 who want to stay stylish without feeling like they’re chasing the latest fads.

From updated silhouettes to fresh accessories, here are five denim trends I can’t wait to wear this spring:

1. Denim Clutch

Amazon Clutch, $15 | Tuckernuck Woven Bag, $88

A denim clutch is an unexpected yet chic way to incorporate denim into your accessories. This trend is so fun because it lets you play with different textures and tones while still keeping your outfit cohesive.

Some you’ll see are lean inga bit cheap-looking even when they are expensive, but the key is to go for something that feels polished and timeless—think understated but chic. That’s what makes this trend interesting—a casual fabric applied in an elegant, polished way.

For this trend, we’re not only talking about actual denim fabric but also blue denim color. It effortlessly blends casual charm with sophistication, making it a perfect companion for both daytime and evening looks.

I love this woven option from Tuckernuck for $88 and I just ordered this $15 unstructured bag from Amazon.

2. Trouser Jeans

J.Crew High Rise Denim Trouser, $158

There was a time in the early 2000s (aka the good old days) when trouser jeans were THE jean. In my early 20s, I wore them everywhere—from the office to a night out, because back then we rocked business casual everywhere. 🤣

So, I for one am thrilled they are making a comeback. To style them today, pair them with a slim-fit top and shoes with a chunky sole and/or heel for a modern, balanced look.

Trouser jeans are the ultimate combination of polished and relaxed. Their tailored structure and wide-leg silhouette make them a versatile choice for various occasions, whether you’re dressing up for work or going out for dinner.

I opted for the High-Rise Denim Trouser from J.Crew a high-rise pair in a dark wash. These run long, so please consider having them hemmed to your best length—bring the shoes you’ll wear with them to the tailor for the perfect fit and ask the tailor to reattach the hem details. This means they will remove the wide hem, shorten the pants, and reattach it to keep the original look.

3. Oversized Denim Jacket

Quince 100% Organic Cotton Oversized Denim Jacket, $59.90

A classic denim jacket is a wardrobe essential you’ll reach for over and again. So make sure you have that first before you buy something trendier.

This season, an oversized version is the next must-have piece.

You’re going to see a lot of denim jacket styles this season, from super fitted to oversized. In the middle are jackets with a lot going on—peplums, ruffles, and exaggerated shoulders. While these styles can be fun, they don’t always have staying power and can be tricky to style, so it’s best to stick with more timeless cuts.

Something more relaxed offers a modern and effortlessly cool aesthetic while maintaining its versatility. Layer it over a fitted dress, structured trousers, or even leggings to create an interesting shape.

I ordered the 100% Organic Cotton Oversized Denim Jacket from Quince for $59.90. I like that it still has a classic design with a slightly more modern silhouette.

4. Denim Dress

Lightweight Denim Callahan Shirt Dress from Tuckernuck, $148

A denim dress is a one-and-done outfit that exudes effortless style. This season, we’re seeing denim dresses in a variety of cuts, from tailored shirt dresses to relaxed, flowy silhouettes. The key to making this trend work is finding a shape that flatters your figure and styling it appropriately. Belted versions can create definition at the waist, while looser styles offer a laid-back, effortless look, which I’m drawn to as an easy every day piece that can transition right into warmer weather.

My pick is the Lightweight Denim Callahan Shirt Dress from Tuckernuck, for $148. It’s easy and breezy and will pair perfectly with an updated sneaker for spring or a simple flat sandal.

5. Denim Sneakers

Vionic Winny Sneaker, $125

There are so many fun and wearable sneaker trends for spring, and denim sneakers are one of the most versatile options.

Much like denim clutches, denim sneakers will come in both true denim fabric and denim-inspired colors, giving you plenty of options to incorporate this trend into your wardrobe. Denim sneakers offer a fresh way to embrace the trend without fully committing to a denim-on-denim look.

They add a playful, relaxed vibe to any outfit while still being easy to wear and style in a way that feels fresh but not over-the-top. Look for styles with mixed materials like suede or leather accents to add depth and sophistication.

I like the Winny Sneaker from Reader Favorite brand Vionic, available in wide and medium for $125.

The best part about these denim trends? They are super wearable and seamlessly integrate into your existing wardrobe, making it easy to update your look with just a few key pieces. Whether you’re accessorizing with a denim clutch, experimenting with new silhouettes, or adding fresh footwear to your collection, there’s a trend for everyone.

Which of these denim trends are you most excited to try this spring? Let me know—I love hearing what styles you’re into!

Megan, are there any rules to combining two pieces of denim in one outfit? For example, can I wear a denim jacket with denim jeans? Would those two pieces have to match really well, or maybe intentionally contrast somehow?

Thanks.

Not really, but I'll do a post with some guidelines in the next few weeks. It's more about playing around and seeing what works together.
