Weekend Outfit Inspiration: Classic Polka Dot Dress from Amazon

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking about my 14-year-old self: a bright-eyed, optimistic, freckle-faced girl with big dreams of moving to New York and taking the fashion world by storm immediately following college.

Back then, I had no idea of the realities of the truly unglamorous world of fashion, and even if you told me, I wouldn’t have cared. Maybe it’s because I’m turning 40 soon and looking back over my last few decades, but I miss that feeling of unbridled enthusiasm and confidence. As much as I love so many aspects of aging, I hate how life can harden your spirit.

I’ve been thinking about that girl, and what she would think about how much I hold myself back. I know she would be disappointed that I tend to hide in the background and let my insecurities prevent me from putting myself out there in a big way. More so, it would bum her out that, even though I created my dream job in fashion, I’m not letting myself be creative or have any fun.

That’s why I decided to change a few things up. Long-time readers know I’ve struggled with incorporating pictures of me on the site, but I think the site needs some life, and frankly, I’m tired of dumbing myself down, so here we go.

All of the outfit pictures you’ll see here are pieces that I own. Some are new, some I’ve had forever. The whole point is to show a variety of real outfits including work from home, casual, professional, date night and more. These posts are not sponsored, I paid for the clothes and I’m not returning them after the photo is taken, I’m actually wearing these outfits.

Today we are going to start with this adorable polka dot dress I found on Amazon for under $25.

Megan Kristel of The Well Dressed Life

Dress: $24, Bag: $30

I’ve been ordering a ton of clothes from Amazon and have been pretty disappointed with most of them. I thought they would be a nice option to bridge the holes I feel in my end of summer wardrobe. Unfortunately, many are cheap, flimsy, sometimes they smell funny, and the fit is terrible.

When ordering be sure to read the reviews and look at the pictures customers share. That’s how I came across this little number, which is a dream.

I love how it fits, how it moves, and how it drapes off the body. The fluttery sleeves are sliming because they broaden the shoulders making your waist look smaller.

Bag: $30

How sweet is this bag? It’s also from Amazon and is surprisingly well made. Perfect for summer date nights, or a Sunday afternoon shower.

Did I mention the dress has pockets? Pockets! Pockets are the best.

Size up by one. I tend to wear a solid 8 or medium but ordered a large and it fits perfectly. At almost 5’10 the length hits at the top of my knee. I’m wearing about a 2″ heel and didn’t need alterations.  You may need to have it hemmed which is an easy alteration your local dry cleaner can handle. The dress is available in six other colors.

The navy polka dot just arrived! You mention 2” heels but no pictures, can you make suggestions for styling? Loved the tips in the Target leopard print post - very helpful!!

I don't buy anything from Amazon unless I enter "made in the USA". I find the quality is mostly better.

Hi Megan, I am nearly 70 and I live in New Zealand. Your website and all the great information and advice has given me a new lease of life. I had really lost my mojo dressing wise and you have restored it. I now feel more confident and able to create a look that suits me - you are a true inspiration, thanks for all the effort you put into helping us. Regards, Diane

High Five for daring and putting yourself out there Megan! I know how it feels - I just started a blog (www.cutecapsule.com)and am struggling with the same dilemma - for now I decided to work with flatlays as I think it is a beautiful way of displaying outfits, but might go back to outfit pictures including me again one day :)

Also, I LOVE the round strawbag, just got a similiar piece on my Italy vacation.

Happy weekend from Switzerland :)

Thank you for your honesty about problems buying on line. I have tried buying dresses a few times also because I find there is a more diverse range of cuts than in retail stores, especially for a 50 year old. But I have to be honest that I have been disappointed by both product descriptions and customer reviews; for example recently I bought a little black dress, it looked lovely in the photo, it was described as ponte fabric and had at least 7 good reviews. When it arrived, it was true to the design and fit, both of which were exactly what I was hoping for, but the fabric was a cheap shiny stretch polyester. It looked so cheap, but had cost U$45, which is mid price here in Australia...how disappointing, but I chalked it up to my own mistake. Thanks for your honesty with your experiences

Just wanted to send you a virtual fist pump for making a move out of your comfort zone, as well as for having the strength to be honest with yourself—hope you are remembering to be kind to yourself, in equal measure. I think there is a generational crisis for women our age: we forget to have fun and be creative (as in what creative means to us, personally), even if we are in creative fields. I can relate to everything you wrote today and am inspired by your openhearted-ness. And, I think all your readers will love getting to see your lovely face more often. You go, lady!

Thank you so much for the lovely comment. I totally agree with you about forgetting to be creative. Brene Brown talks about in terms of play. She says,"rest and play are as vital to our health as nutrition and exercise." :)

I have broader shoulders (I have to size up with jackets and blouses). Does the same slimming principle with the flutter sleeves still apply if I feel like my shoulders are already broad?

And I love the idea of seeing pics of you in your clothes. So much better than the just a picture of one item of clothing!
