Over the last few weeks, I’ve been thinking about my 14-year-old self: a bright-eyed, optimistic, freckle-faced girl with big dreams of moving to New York and taking the fashion world by storm immediately following college.
Back then, I had no idea of the realities of the truly unglamorous world of fashion, and even if you told me, I wouldn’t have cared. Maybe it’s because I’m turning 40 soon and looking back over my last few decades, but I miss that feeling of unbridled enthusiasm and confidence. As much as I love so many aspects of aging, I hate how life can harden your spirit.
I’ve been thinking about that girl, and what she would think about how much I hold myself back. I know she would be disappointed that I tend to hide in the background and let my insecurities prevent me from putting myself out there in a big way. More so, it would bum her out that, even though I created my dream job in fashion, I’m not letting myself be creative or have any fun.
That’s why I decided to change a few things up. Long-time readers know I’ve struggled with incorporating pictures of me on the site, but I think the site needs some life, and frankly, I’m tired of dumbing myself down, so here we go.
All of the outfit pictures you’ll see here are pieces that I own. Some are new, some I’ve had forever. The whole point is to show a variety of real outfits including work from home, casual, professional, date night and more. These posts are not sponsored, I paid for the clothes and I’m not returning them after the photo is taken, I’m actually wearing these outfits.
Today we are going to start with this adorable polka dot dress I found on Amazon for under $25.
I’ve been ordering a ton of clothes from Amazon and have been pretty disappointed with most of them. I thought they would be a nice option to bridge the holes I feel in my end of summer wardrobe. Unfortunately, many are cheap, flimsy, sometimes they smell funny, and the fit is terrible.
When ordering be sure to read the reviews and look at the pictures customers share. That’s how I came across this little number, which is a dream.
I love how it fits, how it moves, and how it drapes off the body. The fluttery sleeves are sliming because they broaden the shoulders making your waist look smaller.
Bag: $30
How sweet is this bag? It’s also from Amazon and is surprisingly well made. Perfect for summer date nights, or a Sunday afternoon shower.
Did I mention the dress has pockets? Pockets! Pockets are the best.
Size up by one. I tend to wear a solid 8 or medium but ordered a large and it fits perfectly. At almost 5’10 the length hits at the top of my knee. I’m wearing about a 2″ heel and didn’t need alterations. You may need to have it hemmed which is an easy alteration your local dry cleaner can handle. The dress is available in six other colors.
