Over 40 Shopping at Abercrombie

I am bored to death with mainstream fashion.

I can’t look at another Ann Taylor printed poly-blend top. Don’t get me started on the downfall of Nordstrom, and I’m tired of ordering dozens of things from Amazon for only two to work.

I’m trying to pull myself out of a fashion rut for the past few months. I’m only 44; I’m not interested in all the frump that is out there but, as a mom to teenage girls, I don’t want to dress like them either.

I’ve been doing some leg work, and over the next few weeks am excited to share some new options I’ve found.

So stay with me on this because when I say Abercrombie to anyone in their 40s, they will immediately remember the sticky, sweet scent of cologne pumping through the vents in their stores. You could smell it a mile away.

And maybe you’re like me, and it takes you back to college. I remember meeting my husband on campus. He wore a long-sleeved A&F tee then, and I thought he was the cutest guy ever.

Abercrombie was youthful, overpriced preppiness.

I loved it.

But fast forward to today, we’re in our 40s and guess what? Abercrombie is totally different and has LOTS of options for grown ups.

Not everything, but enough to put them on our list of resources.

Their quality is great and their prices are reasonable. Sizes in some categories could be more inclusive but they are getting there.

And today, almost everything is an extra 15% off.

Over 40 Shopping at Abercrombie

LuxeLoft Crew Sweater Jacket

If you prefer a jacket that hits at your waist, like I do, our first two picks are worth considering.

First this sweater jacket, priced at $90, now $76.50 with 15% off.

Available in solid white and gray (below) and three stripe options in sizes XXXS – XL. I took the large and have room for a slim tank underneath.

Collarless Tweed Jacket

Another short layer option is their collarless tweed jacket that has gorgeous gold buttons and nubby texture.

Also available in cream (think spring holidays), on sale today for $119, in XXS – XL.

2

Collarless Tweed Jacket

Abercrombie

$140.00

Soft Matte Seamless Tee Bodysuit

Don’t let bodysuits scare you, they are fantastic if you want a seamless look and pair amazingly with jeans or coated bottoms.

I don’t find them uncomfortable in the slightest, and you can manage easily in the restroom.

Available in 18 colors, in sizes XXS – XXL in regular or tall. (I’m 5’10 with a short torso so I stay with a regular fit).

On sale for $42.50.

You can wear this as a layer or a stand alone piece. It’s not see through, soft and comfortable.

Long-Sleeve Off-The-Shoulder Top

I always like to find something different that is still in my comfort zone. It’s an easy way to keep your look fresh while maintaining our style.

So I scooped up this off-the-shoulder-top, in a stripe for earl spring nights out.

It will look lovely with dark boot cut jeans or white bottoms.

On sale for $51, also in solid cream or black, in sizes XXS – XL.

4

Long-Sleeve Off-The-Shoulder Top

Abercrombie

$60.00

Sherpa Vest

For something sporty, I like the idea of their sherpa vest over a long sleeve tee with leggings and sneakers. It’s an updated alternative to a puffer vest.

On sale for $68 in XXS – XL.

Sherpa Vest

Abercrombie

$72.00

Oversized Breezy Shirt

It’s February so now I say things like “summer is right around the corner.” It helps my mental health.

And since summer is around the corner it’s time to pick up some pieces to wear.

A lightweight button down is my jam. Roll up the sleeves and pair with light weight jeans or wear them with shorts to add balance.

Available in blue (featured), white or light brown stripe, in XXS – XL on sale for $59. Consider sizing down for a slimmer fit.

Abercrombie

$63.00

Short-Sleeve Rib Boatneck Top

I adore a classic boatneck top, so I ordered this one in brown (featured) to wear with jeans and boots as we move into spring. I would have also ordered black but my size is sold out so I think these are going fast.

Available in XXS – XL, on sale for $34.

7

Short-Sleeve Rib Boatneck Top

Abercrombie

$36.00

Linen-Blend Midi Shirt Dress

THIS dress is divine.

A linen blend, tailored piece available in black or cream. In XXS – XL in either regular, petite or tall.

I’m 5’10 and I always need to hem these dresses a bit, even when I get them in the regular size. Tall sizes are often overall too big for me.

So a simple hem to bring this to right below or right through your knee is all you’ll need.

On sale for $85.

Linen-Blend Midi Shirt Dress

$100

High Rise Dad Short

I absolutely, happily still wear shorts. So do all my friends. We live in them, especially at the shore in the summer.

But we don’t want them to be sooooo short that we can’t sit down.

This “dad” shorts, give you enough length to feel comfortable without looking dorky.

In sizes 23 – 37, within the link is a range of colors, some distressed some tailored on sale for $53.

I stocked up for the warm weather.

High Rise Dad Short

Abercrombie

Crew Sweater Tee

Finally, this crew neck sweater seems simple, an it is, but the tailored fit feels elevated.

Paired with tailored pants it gives a very Parisian, understated vibe.

I ordered the stripe (featured) and pink, sizes are becoming limited.

On sale for $42.50 in XXS – XL.

Abercrombie

$50.00

I bought the navy/white off the shoulder top and fair warning: it's very short! I'm 5'6 and normally a small but this top is way small and short. Fit like my daughter's crop top!

You've hit the nail on the head. I never thought I'd be shopping at Abercrombie as an almost 40-year-old, but here I am. They have great options!

I totally agree with you about the frump. Im not wearing polyester tops, yuck! I keep my eye out for items with natural fibers. Love the dress! I'm in my early fifties but I want to look and feel current and classic. Thank you for all you do!

I am loving this collection of clothes! Youthfully crisp and yet very sophisticated and adult at the same time. The reasonable prices are a nice surprise too. Thank you for the inspiration!

Right on about Nordstrom and Amazon! I like the vest, body suit and shorts. Thank you for this post!

Love some of these styles. But I need a petite in tops. That eliminates so many retailers! Sure, I can alter to some degree, but it's still super frustrating. Thankfully I don't need petites in pants.

In today’s post you’re lamenting the difficulty in staying updated and age appropriate. As a woman 70+ I have greater issues. Not just age appropriate, but budget appropriate. Could you do a post to help? What brands are a good value? Are there brands that tend to fit an elderly figure better? ( I’m thinking problems with dexterity, mobility, spinal compression, etc.) Also in retirement I don’t have lots of extra money to spend. I appreciate your input. Thank you so much.

I too have hit the style wall (that is why I dig Zara so much, while fast fashion, they take some chances with design). But I could never fit in Abercrombie's limited size restrictions even when I was younger and I doubt seriously they have embraced size equality. I promise I will wander into a store (if I can find one), but I am not holding my breath.

All of their jeans and most of their bottoms go up to a size 37, which is a size 20, in a selection of all lengths. They also have a style called Curve Love that also goes up to a size 20. They don't go super deep into plus sizes but a 20 is a good start.

Thanks for this comment, yes I too am bored with what fashion is offering, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Loft, Nordstrom (which I still love) everything is the same..I'm 73 and have seen a lot of fashion fails in my day.. I do like what you are showing from Abercrombie, might be a bit too young for me, but at least the looks are fresher. It is a fine line sometimes between age appropriate and frump..I tend to walk out of a store empty handed than with purchases.e Banana Republic occasionally has something cute, i just purchased a fitted denim shirt. Your posts are a great read, and good advise.
