Earlier this summer, we finally replaced our mattress after living with a truly terrible sleep situation for much longer than any reasonable adults should have.
The mattress itself was already on its way out. Then, unbeknownst to us, our bed frame broke after Maddie took a flying leap onto our bed.
It turns out bed frames have weight limits, which was news to me. Between the mattress, two adults and a teenager launching herself onto the bed, ours had apparently reached its limit.
We did not realize it was broken right away. We only knew that an already uncomfortable mattress had somehow become significantly worse. Once we figured out what had happened, it was obvious that we needed to replace both the mattress and the frame.
Still, I put it off.
I did not want to spend more money, and I absolutely did not have the bandwidth to research mattresses. Mattress shopping is one of those adult tasks that immediately feels overwhelming. There are endless brands, models, firmness levels, upgrades and bells and whistles.
There was also a number stuck in my head. Somewhere along the way I picked up the idea that a genuinely good mattress runs about $10,000, and I never questioned it. A mattress is always a considered purchase. But that figure pushed me over the edge, and I decided to do nothing about it.
So we lived with ours longer than we should have until I finally had to get over it and make a decision.
After researching what felt like every mattress available, we ordered the Helix Midnight Luxe in June. We have now slept on it for three full months, and because it is currently 25% off for Labor Day with the code LUXE25, I wanted to give you a proper full review because, somehow, this is the best selling item I have recommended in all of 2026.
The Exact Mattress I Chose
We went with the Helix Midnight Luxe with the GlacioTex Cooling Cover and CoolForce Layer. For the support layer, Helix gives you a choice between the standard Luxe Layer and the ErgoAlign Layer, which uses denser foam under your midsection for targeted lower back support. We chose the ErgoAlign.
The Midnight Luxe is built for side sleepers (which I am), and it has a medium feel, rated about a five or six on a scale of ten. I did not want a mattress that we would sink into, but I also did not want to feel like I was sleeping on the floor.
This lands nicely in the middle.
The mattress feels substantial and supportive, particularly through my back and hips, but it still has enough cushioning around my shoulders and pressure points to feel comfortable.
Are the Cooling Upgrades Worth It?
I am an incredibly hot sleeper. I need a cold room, crisp sheets and a fan blowing directly on my face, so I added the GlacioTex Cooling Cover and CoolForce Layer.
The GlacioTex cover feels cool when I first get into bed. The CoolForce Layer sits underneath it and pulls heat away through the night, which is the part that actually matters. A cool-to-the-touch cover is a nice first thirty seconds.
Not waking up overheated at three in the morning is the real thing you are paying for.
To be clear, no mattress is going to turn your bedroom into a walk-in refrigerator. I still keep the room cold, use cooling sheets and sleep with my fan. But the mattress does not trap heat the way our old one did, and the cooling upgrade has been worth it for me.
If you are not a particularly hot sleeper, you may not need it. But if you are waking up overheated, especially thanks to perimenopause, I would seriously consider it.
How Long Does the Helix Midnight Luxe Take to Break In?
One thing I want to mention because I had a brief moment of panic: this mattress needs time to break in.
The first few nights, I was really happy with it. Then, as I settled in, I started to worry that I had made a mistake. It felt firmer than I expected, and because mattress shopping had already taken up more of my mental energy than I wanted to give it, the thought of starting over was enough to send me over the edge.
So I started Googling.
Yes, new mattresses have a break-in period.
Helix says its materials need a few weeks to soften and contour to your body while your body also adjusts to a different level of support. In my experience, it took about two to three weeks before everything settled and the mattress started feeling the way I hoped it would.
Now it’s a dream.
Helix gives you some breathing room with a 120-night sleep trial, which begins on the day your mattress is delivered. They require you to keep it for at least 30 nights before initiating a return. If you are still unhappy after that, you can return it for a full refund within the trial window.
Two things worth knowing about that trial. It applies to the mattress only. Foundations and frames get a 30-night window, not 120, so if you order a foundation you have far less time to decide.
I also wondered how returning a mattress would even work, since it arrives vacuum sealed and rolled and there is no getting it back into that box once it expands. I worried that the return policy would be useless if returning the mattress turned into a bigger pain than I wanted to deal with.
Helix says you can recycle the packaging after setup, and if you decide to return it, they arrange a free pickup through one of their removal partners. The team collects it from inside your house. You strip the bedding and clear a path, and that is the extent of your involvement.
Your refund is issued once they have confirmation it was picked up. Where they can, they donate it, and anything that cannot be donated gets recycled.
I did not end up needing the return option, but knowing it was available made me feel much better while I waited for the mattress to settle.
What to Check Before You Order: Height, Foundation and Frame
The Midnight Luxe is a tall mattress. Ours measures 13.5 inches high, so you will want to make sure your sheets have deep enough pockets.
You also need to consider what will support it.
If you have and/or prefer a platform bed, a Helix mattress can go right on top with nothing extra.
I, however, like a traditional bed that sits higher off the ground, so we bought the Helix Foundation to use in place of a standard box spring.
Traditional box springs typically do not provide the right support for a Helix mattress. Helix recommends its foundation or another solid, flat support system with firm slats no more than 5.5 inches apart. If you want to keep an existing box spring, you may be able to add a bunkie board to create the necessary support. I ordered their bed foundation.
And, as I now know, you should also check the weight limit on your actual bed frame.
Once you combine the mattress, the foundation, two adults and the occasional kid, or two or three, the total weight adds up quickly. We bought a new bed with a frame that will hold 1,000 pounds, enough to support the entire setup so I never have to think about this again.
Is the Helix Midnight Luxe Worth It?
For us, absolutely.
And here is where that $10,000 figure I had been carrying around falls apart. Our exact setup, with the cooling cover, the CoolForce Layer, the ErgoAlign Layer, retails for about $3,330. With the Labor Day sale, it comes to roughly $2,500. (Note: the foundation was an additional $400 on sale.)
I spent years buying smaller things to help me sleep better while ignoring the actual place where I sleep every night.
The Helix holds its shape under me, keeps my hips from sinking, and does not hold heat. Most importantly, I no longer dread getting into a bed that I know is going to be uncomfortable.
