A Burgundy Satin Skirt Makes Holiday Dressing Easy. Here Are Three Ways to Wear It.

The holiday season is almost here, which means my mind is already on what to wear to everything from Thanksgiving dinner to Christmas parties and nights out with friends.

I love getting dressed up this time of year, but I also like finding pieces that feel festive without being limited to one occasion. And right now, I’m particularly drawn to burgundy satin. The color is gorgeous for fall and winter, and the subtle sheen of satin makes even a simple sweater feel a little more special.

For this week’s Wear It Three Ways, I’m featuring this burgundy satin skirt from Banana Republic Factory, a reader best seller, currently $60 plus an extra 25% off, and showing you three ways to style it for the holidays.

If you’re new to this series, here’s how it works. We take an item you’ve already been loving and build three outfits around it, mixing in other reader favorites and a few new finds at a range of price points. You can shop the looks directly or simply use them as inspiration to try something different with what you already own.

This week, we’re pairing the skirt with a coordinating sweater for a tonal look, dressing it up with black and boots, and bringing in soft pink for something a little different. Three distinct outfits to take you through the holiday season and beyond.

Look One: Monochromatic Burgundy

Let’s start with a monochromatic look, because I love how rich and interesting different shades of burgundy look together.

When recreating this outfit, don’t worry about matching the sweater and skirt exactly. In fact, I think it looks better when the shades are slightly different. Satin reflects light differently than a knit, so even similar colors will have their own depth and dimension. That’s what makes the combination work so well.

For the sweater, I’m using the Elsie Cashmere Roll Neck from Boden. It’s 100% cashmere and currently $135 with code DUSWD. When you put it on, give it a little personality. Push up your sleeves, try a half tuck, and let it sit naturally. You want the outfit to feel comfortable and effortless, not overly arranged.

Next, I’m bringing back the Marc Fisher pumps in taupe snakeskin, which were a bestseller in September. I think these are incredibly versatile when you treat the print like a neutral, exactly as we’re doing here. They break up the burgundy without competing with it.

Now, can we talk about this bag? Because I am completely in love.

Favorite Daughter recently introduced a handbag collection, and the Suede Heirloom Clutch immediately caught my attention. It’s made from water-resistant suede, has beautiful gold hardware, and is absolutely gorgeous. It’s also $348, which is not inexpensive. And yes, I looked for a more affordable alternative. And no, I couldn’t find anything I liked nearly as much.

So for now, I just need everyone to know it exists, in case someone out there wants to give it a good home.

Finally, I would wear my hair in a low, slightly undone ponytail and add a pair of substantial earrings. I love the Meryl Semi-Precious Statement Stud Earrings from BaubleBar in Tiger’s Eye. They’re $44, and the mix of warm brown and gold is the perfect finishing touch.

Look Two: Black and Burgundy

For our second look, I wanted to do something a little dressier, and I’ve been looking for an excuse to feature a beautiful off-the-shoulder sweater.

I found this 100% cashmere sweater from Saks, currently on sale for around $200. What I particularly like is how subtle the neckline is. It feels intentional and elegant, rather than looking like your sweater is slipping off your shoulder. It’s just enough to make the outfit feel special without showing too much skin.

A tall black boot makes sense here, and I really like this slim, streamlined option from Nine West. I have a similar pair from a few seasons ago, and every time I wear them, I’m reminded of how useful they are. Compared to similar styles in leather, the price is very reasonable. I’d wear these with black tights to create one continuous line underneath the skirt.

For accessories, I’m keeping things simple. This Structured Calf Hair Clutch from J.Crew is a classic, versatile option at a great price. It’s the kind of evening bag you can pull out again and again throughout the season, regardless of what you’re wearing.

Finally, I wanted earrings that would complement the asymmetrical neckline without competing with it. I found this pretty, affordable pair from Anthropologie, and the burgundy stones tie everything back to the skirt.

I love this combination for a holiday dinner or an evening out when you want to dress up but aren’t in the mood for a traditional party dress.

Look Three: Burgundy and Petal Pink

Finally, how pretty is this combination? I absolutely love the soft pink with the rich burgundy. It’s feminine, a little unexpected, and such a gorgeous way to wear color during the holidays.

First, I found this Sam Edelman coat at Nordstrom, currently on sale for $160. It’s a 51% wool blend, which I think is worth pointing out. I’ve seen coats selling for $700 or more that are primarily polyester, so finding one with this much wool for well under $200 is a pretty good deal. And the best part? It would work beautifully with all three outfits in this post.

Underneath, I’m using another reader favorite, the Stretch Cotton Jersey Sleeveless Mock Neck Top from Quince. It’s just $19.90, and I chose this beautiful petal pink shade. The softly draped neckline and ruching give it a little more interest than a basic sleeveless top, and I love how the lighter color breaks up all the burgundy.

Then I found these Julie Vos earrings and literally squealed. Are you kidding me? The combination of burgundy, pink, and gold could not be more perfect for this outfit. They’re the kind of earrings that make you want to plan somewhere to go just so you can wear them.

For the bag, I wanted to introduce a little texture, and this AQUA Medium Croc-Embossed Patent Leather Clutch from Bloomingdale’s is gorgeous. It has that beautiful glossy finish that works so well with satin.

I also want to point something out about the reviews. The bag currently has a 4.2-star rating, but when I looked more closely, I noticed that one customer gave it a single star because of a shipping delay, not because of the bag itself. It’s a good reminder to actually read reviews rather than relying entirely on the overall rating.

And finally, can you believe these gorgeous burgundy velvet slingbacks are from Naturalizer? I love the shape of the heel, the pointed toe, and the richness of the velvet. They’re a fun, festive finishing touch from a brand known for comfort, which makes them even more appealing.

This might be my favorite of the three. Between the pink, the velvet, the earrings, and that beautiful coat, there’s so much to love without any one piece overwhelming the outfit.

  1. I, too, love the burgundy and pink outfit! But my satin skirt is navy. What would you think of a lavender or orchid top to wear with it?
