5 Great Denim Jackets for Women over 40

If you’re like me, a denim jacket has been a wardrobe staple for 20 years. Since college (which, I’m just realizing, was 25 years ago!), it was the thing you threw over a dress, sweats, and our go-to black flared pants—and today, not much has changed.

All these years later, mine is in constant rotation, and I wear it the same way: over cotton sundresses and chino shorts, as well as athleisure and loungewear.

And with spring right around the corner, you might need a new one.

So, let’s round up some affordable options in a range of inclusive sizes.

The Classic Denim Jacket

As much as I recommend spending a little more on a basic, I don’t think you need to spend much more than $100 here. In fact, my go-to denim jacket (featured below) is from Old Navy. I’ve had it for years and didn’t spend more than $30.

Look for classic styling, in a medium wash, and you’ll get tons of wear out of it for seasons to come.

The Best Denim Jackets

Best Denim Jackets
Left: J.Crew Factory, $68 | Madewell, 128 Center: Quince, $49.90 Right : Old Navy Classic Jean Jacket, $27.99 | KUT from the Kluth, $89

There are a ton of options available but these are my favorite.

J.Crew Factory, $68: This will hit right at your hip, with as slim fit for just under $70 available in XXS – 3X.

Madewell, $128: I’m a big fan of Madewell’s quality and like this classic option with petite size options. Sizes XXS – XXL in petite and “standard.”

Quince, $49.90: If I were going to replace what I already have, I would pick up this $50 option from Quince made of 100% organic cotton denim. I like the clean lines and shape. Sizes are limited to XS – XL.

Old Navy Classic Jean Jacket, $27.99: Old Navy never fails, between the value, quality and size range, I always end up recommending their pieces. Your choice of five washes in sizes regular, tall and petite in XS – 4X for under $30. Note: this option does not have any stretch.

KUT from the Kluth, $89. Finally, I had a KUT denim jacket for a long time but ended up leaving at hotel. This one is really nice. I like the color of the wash, and this one DOES have stretch so take that into consideration. Available in sizes XXS – XL.

I've been wearing denim jackets for over 50 years now and have no intention to stop! Thanks for the post. At nearly 68 I'm a bit older than many of your readers, but I eagerly look forward to your posts every day! Keep up the great work :)

FYI- Lands End denim jackets work well for those of us with a larger bust.

Mine is several years old— I have it in classic blue as well as white and love both.

Denim jackets look too casual for my sleek style. Is there another type of jacket that would be just as versatile as the denim jacket?

PS – I just joined the wardrobe challenge on Facebook. Looking forward to it!

I would go for a motto jacket, wear it the same way, it's just a bit more elevated. :)

Is there a particular denim jacket you would recommend for women with a short torso?
