Over the last few years, I’ve really come to appreciate a great linen button-down shirt. It has that relaxed, lived-in, East Coast, Nancy Meyers aesthetic I always gravitate toward, but today’s versions feel much more refined than they used to.
Years ago, many linen shirts felt boxy and shapeless. Now there are so many beautiful options with slimmer, more flattering cuts, elevated details, and fabrics that drape beautifully without losing that effortless look linen is known for.
Personally, I always buy long-sleeve versions and simply roll the cuffs instead of opting for short sleeves. I also stick to crisp white. It’s timeless, goes with everything, and never feels out of place.
My favorite way to wear one is with summer-weight jeans on a cool evening or thrown on with a pair of shorts after a day at the beach.
Honestly, there are few things I enjoy more than those couple of hours after you’ve showered off the sand and sunscreen, poured a crisp glass of wine, and are sitting on the deck with friends in something fresh and lightweight.
For today’s Splurge, Spend, Save & Steal, I compared four popular linen button-down shirts. They all create that effortless summer look, but the fabrics, fit, construction, and price tags are very different.
What to Look for in a Linen Button-Down Shirt
Fabric
Whenever possible, look for 100% linen.
Linen is naturally breathable, lightweight, and moisture-wicking, making it one of the best fabrics you can wear in hot weather. It also softens over time, so a good linen shirt usually gets better with every wash.
That said, don’t overlook linen blends. A touch of cotton or rayon can make a shirt feel softer right away and help reduce some of the wrinkling. If you’re shopping at a lower price point, a quality linen blend can still be an excellent buy.
European Linen
You’ll often see terms like European flax, Irish linen, or Italian linen in product descriptions.
These aren’t just marketing buzzwords. European flax is known for producing long, strong fibers that create linen that’s softer, smoother, and more durable. Irish and Italian mills also have centuries-long reputations for weaving exceptional linen fabrics.
While the country of origin isn’t the only measure of quality, it’s one of the reasons you’ll often see premium linen shirts highlighting where their fabric comes from
Weight
Not all linen feels the same.
Some shirts are so lightweight they’re almost sheer, while others have enough substance to drape beautifully without feeling heavy. I prefer something in the middle. It should feel cool on the hottest days but still have enough weight to look tailored.
Fit
This is one category where I almost always recommend a relaxed fit.
Linen is meant to skim the body, not cling to it. A little extra room allows air to circulate, feels more comfortable in the heat, and creates that effortless, relaxed look that makes linen so appealing.
It’s also important to read the size guide and reviews before ordering. Brands use terms like relaxed, boyfriend, classic, and oversized, but those labels aren’t consistent from one retailer to the next. One brand’s “boyfriend” fit may be another’s standard fit.
Think about how you plan to wear your shirt, too. If you want to layer it over tanks and swimsuits or wear it open, you may prefer a roomier fit. If you’ll mostly wear it buttoned and tucked into pants or shorts, your usual size is probably the better choice.
Construction
Pay attention to the little things.
Neat stitching, securely attached buttons, clean finishing, and quality fabric all contribute to how a shirt hangs on your body and how well it holds up after repeated washing.
Splurge: Frank & Eileen Eileen Linen Shirt
I’ll be honest: I’m rather conflicted about Frank & Eileen.
The few pieces I own are exceptionally well made. They wash beautifully, feel incredible on, and have become staples in my wardrobe. Every time I put one on, I can genuinely feel the difference. At the same time, I look at the price tag and think, How can a shirt possibly cost this much?
What I’ve come to realize is that Frank & Eileen has an incredibly loyal customer. She’s buying fewer pieces, expecting to wear them for years, and is willing to pay for exceptional fabrics and craftsmanship. If that philosophy fits both your lifestyle and your budget, it’s easy to understand the appeal.
The Eileen is the brand’s signature shirt. Made from Italian linen, it feels soft from the very first wear and has that relaxed, effortless drape that’s difficult to find at lower price points. I especially love the high-low hem, which makes it look polished whether it’s tucked in, untucked, or layered over a tank.
This isn’t the shirt I’d recommend to everyone. But if linen is something you wear constantly throughout the summer and you appreciate beautifully made clothing, I completely understand why so many women consider it worth the investment.

Spend: J.Crew Baird McNutt Irish Linen Shirt
This is where I think most readers should land.
J.Crew partners with Baird McNutt, one of Ireland’s oldest and most respected linen mills, and the quality is excellent. The fabric feels substantial without being heavy, softens beautifully over time, and the fit is classic enough to wear tucked, untucked, or open over a tank.

How to Choose
The Frank & Eileen is beautifully made and absolutely lives up to its reputation. If you know you’ll wear a linen shirt for years and appreciate premium fabrics and thoughtful construction, it’s a worthwhile investment.
The J.Crew offers many of the same qualities at a much more approachable price. With linen from Baird McNutt, one of Ireland’s oldest linen mills, classic styling, and frequent promotions, it’s an excellent choice if you’re looking for a balance of quality and value.
The Quince is proof that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a beautiful linen shirt. If 100% linen is your priority but your budget isn’t close to $100, this is an easy recommendation.
The good news is that there isn’t a wrong choice here. Think about how often you’ll wear it, what your budget allows, and which fit you prefer. A great linen shirt is one of those pieces that only gets better with time, and whichever one you choose will earn its place in your summer wardrobe.
