The Secret to Healthy, Shiny Hair After 40

Unlock the key to vibrant, glossy hair with these expert tips tailored specifically for women over 40.

As we age, our hair naturally changes—it’s just part of the process. Hormonal shifts, years of styling, and lifestyle factors can leave hair feeling drier, more brittle, or less vibrant. At 45, I’ve started noticing these changes myself. My hair looks… different. Not bad, just not the same. It’s a little thinner, and I can’t help but wonder if years of tightly pulling it back have impacted my hairline.

I’ve been using many of these tips for years and credit them with keeping my hair glossy and healthy despite the inevitable effects of aging and some over-processing along the way. But now, I’m stepping up my game and doing everything I can to maintain and improve its condition.

Here’s the good news: while these changes are common, achieving healthy, shiny hair in your 40s (and beyond) is absolutely possible. I’ve done the research for us, and with a few simple tweaks to your routine and the right care, you can keep your hair looking and feeling vibrant.

1. Prioritize Scalp Care

Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. As we age, our scalp produces less oil, which can lead to dryness. Combat this with these strategies:

2. Switch to Sulfate-Free Shampoos

Spend any time online, and you’ll find conflicting opinions about sulfates—some claim they’re perfectly fine, while others insist they’re the worst thing you could use on your hair. It can be frustrating how often things are demonized, but the truth is, it really depends on your hair type and needs.

Sulfates, for some, can strip away natural oils, leaving hair dry, dull, and prone to frizz. If that sounds like your experience, switching to a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo might help cleanse your hair without compromising its moisture and shine.

Here’s what I know for sure: my hair looks and feels its best when I use sulfate-free shampoos.
Product Recommendation: Alterna Caviar Anti-Aging Replenishing Moisture Hair Care is my go to.

3. Deep Condition Weekly

Replenish hydration and restore shine with weekly deep conditioning treatments. Look for masks containing:

  • Keratin: For strength and repair
  • Shea Butter: For deep hydration
  • Jojoba or Avocado Oil: For added shine

Product Recommendation: Olaplex No.8 Bond Intense Moisture Mask

4. Schedule Regular Trims

Trim your hair every 6–8 weeks to keep split ends in check and prevent them from traveling up the shaft, causing more damage.

It may seem like an obvious tip, but trust me—it makes a big difference! Coming from someone who adores her hairstylist but dreads sitting in that chair for hours, it’s worth it for healthier, stronger hair.

5. Protect Your Hair from Heat

Heat styling can weaken hair over time. Protect it by:

  • Using a Heat Protectant: ALWAY apply a heat protectant before styling.
Product Recommendation: CHI 44 Iron Guard Thermal Protection Spray – I discovered this through my daughters and we all love it.
  • Lowering Heat Settings: Use the lowest effective temperature on styling tools.
  • Air-Drying When Possible: Give your hair a break from heat.

6. Add Shine-Boosting Products

Enhance natural shine with lightweight serums or oils. Look for:

  • Argan Oil: For a glossy finish
  • Camellia Oil: For softness
  • Silicones: To smooth frizz and add shine (use in moderation)

Product Recommendation: Moroccanoil Treatment Original – Iconic for a reason. I’ve been using this since 2011!

7. Nourish Your Hair from Within

Your diet plays a significant role in hair health. Incorporate:

  • Protein: Found in lean meats, eggs, and beans, I add Vital
  • Omega-3 Fatty Acids: From salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds
  • Vitamins and Minerals: Biotin, zinc, and iron

Product Recommendation: Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin & Nails Gummies

8. Protect Against Environmental Damage

UV rays and pollution can harm your hair. Protect it by:

9. Explore Professional Treatments

For extra TLC, consider treatments like keratin smoothing or glossing.

10. Handle Your Hair with Care

Gentle handling can prevent unnecessary damage.

  • Use a wide-tooth comb to detangle wet hair.
Product Recommendation:The Kitsch Wide Tooth Comb – have multiples of these in our showers throughout the house.
  • Sleep on a silk pillowcase to reduce friction and breakage.
Product Recommendation: Slip Silk Pillowcase – Pricey but the BEST! There are less expensive options on Amazon. I have these on my bed that are under $25.
  • Consider a silk bonnet for added protection.
Product Recommendation: You can find these at various price points to suit any need. It might take trying a few different options to find the perfect fit. My middle daughter has very curly hair and started wearing a bonnet last year. She uses this one and says it’s made a huge difference in her hair, making her morning routine so much easier. Funny enough, she was on FaceTime with a few of her friends the other night, and they were all wearing one! I wrote a full review of the SLIP Silk Pillowcase here.

11. Support Hair Health with Supplements

Boost hair strength and growth with supplements containing:

  • Biotin
  • Collagen
  • Vitamin D
  • Saw Palmetto

Product Recommendations:

  • Nutrafol Women’s Balance – This is what I’m currently taking. To see results, consistency is key. I’ll share a more detailed review soon, but in short, it’s been effective for addressing postnatal hair loss and maintaining thicker hair overall. That said, I find the recommended dosage excessive—they suggest taking four pills a day, but I only take two.
  • Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements – Full disclosure: I plan to switch to this once I finish my bottle of Nutrafol. It’s half the price, requires just two very small pills a day, and has similarly positive reviews.

12. Embrace Hair-Friendly Lifestyle Habits

  • Manage Stress: Stress is linked to hair loss and I can attest. At my most stressed and burned out my hair was falling out in chunks. Activities like yoga and meditation can help.
  • Stay Hydrated: Proper hydration benefits both scalp and hair.
  • Prioritize Sleep: Aim for 7–9 hours (lol!) to support hair repair and growth.

Final Thoughts

Your 40s are the perfect time to rethink how you care for your hair. It’s not about chasing perfection but about embracing a routine that works for where you are now. With a little consistency and the right products, having healthy, shiny hair isn’t out of reach—it’s entirely doable.

These tips aren’t about complicating your life. They’re simple adjustments that can make a big difference over time. Share this guide with friends who might also be navigating these changes, and check out our other posts for more practical advice to help you feel your best.

This is such a great post. However, the link to the Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements did not work. I did order it but I don't think you will get a commission on it. :(

Oh gosh. Changes in hair. I am 68 and have been losing hair for that last couple of years. Probably lack of estrogen. But you are so right about the basic texture changes through the years. I now have wavy hair and it was straight before. One change that I have instituted is a good brushing every day with a quality brush. I also use a homemade almond oil/rosemary oil concoction and I do see new baby hairs at the hairline. Unfortunately, Nutrafol cannot be taken if one is taking blood thinners. Readers should double-check before adding an oral supplement for hair loss.

Great tips! I recently purchased a silk pillowcase from Quince and I can highly recommend it. The price is reasonable for real silk. I notice the difference in my hair in the morning, I have a lot less frizz.
