Lots of requests are coming in for suggestions for a classic black wool coat. And as it turns out, I need one too.
So let’s do a round-up!
Long before 2020, I invested in a gorgeous black dress coat from Reiss (similar to this). At the time, it was a big buy for me, and it was worth every penny.
Every time I slipped it on, I felt gorgeous, even a little powerful. I wore it down to its threads, to the point that even the pocket lining was gone.
At this point in life, I don’t need a designer coat. Especially since I won’t wear it enough to get my money’s worth.
I’m not regularly walking into meetings or elegant dinners and the days of wearing a sheath and heels are very few, and far between.
But I do want the look of designer and a nice quality.
So here’s what I found, along with what I bought for myself.
5 Classic Black Wool Coats
Within these options are all sizes, including plus and petite. Sizes will sell out quickly.
Lauren Ralph Lauren
Lauren Ralph Lauren, $340
Let’s start with what I ordered. This gorgeous wool-blend coat is styled like a trench. I love the collar, the belt, and the buttons. This will look lovely over a knee-length dress/skirt or pants. And it’s priced well for the quality.
Available at Nordstrom, sizes 0 – 16 (runs true), also in navy and red.
J.Crew
J.Crew, $398
If you want something waist-defining but without a belt, consider this Italian double-cloth coat from J.Crew. It looks great dressed up or down and is particularly lovely if you are petite.
Available at J.Crew, in classic, petite and tall, sizes 0 – 16, in seven color options.
Cole Haan
Cole Haan, $267
If you like a traditional wrap coat, you know sometimes they end up looking like a bathrobe. However, this Cole Haan option is the right length (and easy to alter) and isn’t oversized.
Express
Express, $248, On Sale $150
Kick up the style factor with this double-breasted coat from Express. Yes, Express. The same place we use to shop in college. We’re allowed back in.
This coat has all five star reviews.
City Chic
City Chic, $198
For any of my plus sized readers, City Chic is a brand I want you to know. They embrace fashion and offer real style, highlighting your shape instead of covering you up. They offer everything, including jeans, pants, tops, dresses and blazers and coats.
Available at Nordstrom, they start at a size 14 and their line is stunning and well priced. This military inspired belted coat is a wonderful example of their assortment.
