5 Classic Black Wool Coats

Lots of requests are coming in for suggestions for a classic black wool coat. And as it turns out, I need one too.

So let’s do a round-up!

Long before 2020, I invested in a gorgeous black dress coat from Reiss (similar to this). At the time, it was a big buy for me, and it was worth every penny.

Every time I slipped it on, I felt gorgeous, even a little powerful. I wore it down to its threads, to the point that even the pocket lining was gone.

At this point in life, I don’t need a designer coat. Especially since I won’t wear it enough to get my money’s worth.

I’m not regularly walking into meetings or elegant dinners and the days of wearing a sheath and heels are very few, and far between.

But I do want the look of designer and a nice quality.

So here’s what I found, along with what I bought for myself.

5 Classic Black Wool Coats

City Chic Black Wool Coat

Within these options are all sizes, including plus and petite. Sizes will sell out quickly.

Lauren Ralph Lauren

Lauren Ralph Lauren Black Wool Coat

Lauren Ralph Lauren, $340

Let’s start with what I ordered. This gorgeous wool-blend coat is styled like a trench. I love the collar, the belt, and the buttons. This will look lovely over a knee-length dress/skirt or pants. And it’s priced well for the quality.

Available at Nordstrom, sizes 0 – 16 (runs true), also in navy and red.

J.Crew

J.Crew Black Wool Coat

J.Crew, $398

If you want something waist-defining but without a belt, consider this Italian double-cloth coat from J.Crew. It looks great dressed up or down and is particularly lovely if you are petite.

Available at J.Crew, in classic, petite and tall, sizes 0 – 16, in seven color options

Cole Haan

Cole Haan Black wool coat

Cole Haan, $267

If you like a traditional wrap coat, you know sometimes they end up looking like a bathrobe. However, this Cole Haan option is the right length (and easy to alter) and isn’t oversized.

Available at Macy’s, sizes 2 – 16, also in ice blue and dusty pick. Take advantage of a wild sale! Originally $420, now $267 with code SCORE

Express

Express Black Wool Coat

Express, $248, On Sale $150

Kick up the style factor with this double-breasted coat from Express. Yes, Express. The same place we use to shop in college. We’re allowed back in.

This coat has all five star reviews.

Available at Express, in XXS – XL, in black and pink, now 40% off. I might get the pink at this price!

City Chic

City Chic Black Wool Coat

City Chic, $198

For any of my plus sized readers, City Chic is a brand I want you to know. They embrace fashion and offer real style, highlighting your shape instead of covering you up. They offer everything, including jeans, pants, tops, dresses and blazers and coats.

Available at Nordstrom, they start at a size 14 and their line is stunning and well priced. This military inspired belted coat is a wonderful example of their assortment.

Available at Nordstrom, sizes 14 – 24.

I love a pure wool coat. I have had different ones over the years. They wear well, keep warm and elevate your look instantly. My favorite coat is one that is double breasted, notched lapels and is styled long. Good options are black, dark navy or charcoal grey. They are a staple in any wardrobe & investing in a well made classic coat will serve well many years provided you care for it!

These are gorgeous, as expected! I just wish the Ralph Lauren buttons didn't have the brand name all over them. Buttons are to the coat what shoes are to an outfit. They can make or break the look. And yes, easily changed, but that's 2-3 more items on the Ta Da List. That aside, you're going to look wonderful in this coat for years to come! I hope we get to see you all dressed up and wearing this coat over top!
