Wear to Work Now and Later: Scalloped Pants

A Business Casual Capsule to Get You Through the Summer and Into the FallWear to Work ScallopedKey Piece: Pants, $59; Summer: Sweater, $58.50; Shoe, $33; Bag, $168; Earring, $65; Fall: Sweater, $64; Shoe, $79.90; Scarf, $95; Bag, $298; Earring, $59

Continuing our Buy Now, Wear Now and Later series for our Wednesday’s Wear to Work post, we’re highlighting a traditional navy trouser in a slightly cropped style finished with a scalloped hem.  I always forget about the Banana Republic as a resource for polished business casual separates, yet every time I walk in, I find several updated, easy to wear options.  This pant is cut like a trouser and drapes beautifully. The scalloped detail gives a subtle, feminine touch without being overly sweet. It’s available in sizes 0-16 with short, regular and long lengths. I’m 5’10 and find their long lengths too long for me. It is also available in red.

To wear now, I paired it with a linen sweater from Brooks Brothers. It’s on sale and currently available in all sizes XS – XL. I would wear this to a casual office or on a summer Friday when I know my schedule is light. For the shoes, I found these tan block heel sandals from Target. Their Who What Wear collection has fun and affordable pieces, perfect for this time of year when you might need something new but don’t want to invest. I love a tan sandal, and these feel polished while the faux suede material adds some visual texture.

I’m crazy for the color of this tote by Madewell. It’s a deep, orangey-red and works beautifully with navy and white. It makes it feel less nautical, providing a pop of color. Finally, I’m surprised how much I like these faux-pearl lever-back earrings. They are simple and traditional but a bit more interesting than a stud.

Once the weather turns crisp, and my schedule gets super busy, I immediately turn to monochromatic outfits. It’s a chic and fast way to get dressed. Because the pants have an interesting hem, you don’t want to add much more to the look, or you run the risk of different elements competing instead of complementing one another. My clients are always looking for a better basic for the fall with a real short sleeve. I found this short sleeve, back button sweater on sale at Brookes Brothers. A subtle grosgrain trim adds an extra bit of interest and elegance without being too much. It is available in five other colors, sizes XS – XL.

In the spirit of keeping it simple, I found this lovely navy scarf. I like that it combines multiple shades of blue, keeping the look consistent but also adding some depth. You could tie it traditionally around your neck or wrap it around the strap of your bag. Speaking of the bag, this one by Louise et Cie is almost $300, but I think it is gorgeous. I love the slim profile (perfect if you don’t have to lug a lot of stuff to the office) and mixed materials.

To round out the look, I added these drop earrings Stella & Dot. The stone in the earring mimics the color of the buttons. This provides a cohesive element that makes it look like you tried. 🙂  Lastly, these flats, also by Louise et Cie, are a personal favorite. I wore them for four straight days as we logged some serious mileage in London. They are polished and still very comfortable.
