Wear to Work: Herringbone Blazer - The Well Dressed Life

Lately, it’s been a challenge to find simple basics, the kind of pieces you can quickly grab and put together an outfit in under five minutes.  Happily, the items in today’s post are just that: easy, versatile and just updated enough without sacrificing their timelessness.  Today’s Wear to Work outfit works if you are in a professional office sit on a board, or every now and then need a tailored look.

Wear to Work: Herringbone BlazerBlazer, $47  |  Skirt, $150  |  Pump, $50  |  Top, $27  |  Bag, $298  |  Earrings, $48  |  Watch, $225

The Blazer

A blazer with interest is hard to come across so I did a little happy dance when I quickly landed on this subtle herringbone one button blazer for under $100. It’s ideal for this time of year. Sizing runs 0 – 18.  Talbots has a similar style around the same price in all sizes including petite, plus, and plus petite.

Remember our tip: When working with a blazer an easy way to figure out what else to wear with it is to go with the color of the button.

The Straight Skirt

Need a new skirt?  Look no further than this simple knit straight skirt at Nordstrom for $150. (Also available in plus.) When working with a tailored blazer, keep your skirt straight in shape and hem it to your best length, typically just above your knee.

The Tank

I searched high and low for the ideal underpinning that wasn’t a small fortune.  This Anne Klein jersey top is perfect.  The neckline mimics that of the blazer and the understated pleating at the neckline adds a little extra texture without being over done.  Stock up, you’ll wear it all the time under blazers, cardigans and on it’s own in the warm months. Bonus: it’s on sale for under $30.

The Shoe

In my mind, this is an elegant and very practical outfit. Often, practical can go frumpy when we don’t pay attention to the details.  If you’re looking for a sensible yet stylish shoe check out these Franco Sarto block heel pumps.  They’re done in suede, so they are seasonally appropriate but still updated.  They are on sale for under $50 – sizes are selling fast.

So many of you have picked up the Sam Edelman classic black heels we’ve featured several times already.  They would work just as well. Either these kitten heels, or these higher pumps.

The Bag

Finally, a bag worth celebrating.  The last few season bags for work have left a lot to be desired. It’s been…a lot of the same.  This beautiful bag by Louise et Cie (maker of equally lovely shoes) really hits the ball out of the park by combining the functionality of a purse and briefcase, for under $300, in a modern design.

The Accessories

You don’t need a lot here.  I like these Kate Spade studs, they are under $50 put have a much higher end feel.  Finally, can we bring watches back? They’re so elegant, especially with a bold face and leather strap.
