The way most women shop is not reflected on fashion sites. For many of us, we pick up a few pieces each season, hopefully building out a wardrobe that feels congruent to our personal style, and try our best to mix and match options to get the most out of our budgets.
Our new monthly series, The Style Six, features six items specific to the season, that you can wear now, and build on throughout the year. I say this often, but it bears repeating: I don’t design these posts thinking you are going to purchase every piece. Our main goal is to get you inspired. I love when I get emails saying you recreated something with pieces you already owned based off these posts.
If you do want to pick something up, my recommendations are based on my experience as a stylist (for over ten years) and my knowledge of our readers. I think of it like, if you were my client, this is what I would put in your fitting room.
As usual, within each post you’ll find as many size options as possible.
One outfit, six pieces, endless possibilities.
To kick us off, let’s talk “date night outfits.” A few pieces to wear out on the weekends is one of the more popular requests I receive. Of course, it doesn’t have to be an actual date; maybe it is a night out with your spouse, or drinks with your mom friends. Either way, you probably don’t want to wear what you wore to work all week. When I found this sweater, I knew it was ideal for just that.
This season you’ll notice that puff sleeve details are everywhere. Most look ridiculous for everyday life. However, CECE (found at Nordstrom) makes soft and feminine tops that incorporate just enough trend detailing to help you look modern without looking like you are trying too hard.
In the early fall, it’s nice to have a few top options that don’t require additional layers since the weather is still on the warm side. I picked this up in white to wear pretty much how you see it here. It’s also available in a gorgeous shade of red that would be perfect for the holidays.
Pair it with your favorite dark wash jeans. A “skinny” or straight leg would look best since it will balance the fullness of the sleeves. Above I featured the Paige Skinny High Waisted Jeans in black. Buy and wear whatever fits your budget and body type. Our post The Best Jeans in Every Shape and Size is a helpful resource we regularly update.
I think this bag makes the outfit. The grey suede softens the look and the hardware makes it look more expensive than $60. It’s also available in black which is another great option. Keep your eye out for affordable clutches while your shopping. Personally, I have a range in my closet from pieces I “invested” in to ones I picked up for $20 at Target – I’ll let you guess which ones I’m complimented on the most 🙂
Bringing in versatile pieces is key to keeping your budget intact while getting the most out of your wardrobe. These grey suede pumps by Vince Camuto are on sale at DSW and work for a date night or a day in the office. You can wear them with jeans, a dress, suits, you name it.
Because the top and the bag have a lot of interest, you don’t need much in the way of accessories. I am trying to feature better accessory and jewelry options this season in a range of prices. What’s difficult is that it seems like most jewelry is either a few or thousands of dollars. There’s not much in between. Happily, I started paying attention the Anthropologies collection and it’s bursting with a stunning assortment that doesn’t look like everything else.
These earrings are under $50 and total show stoppers. I paired them with this simple gemstone ring. You can wear it on its own or stack it. Both pieces work together without feeling matchy-matchy.
