Sunday Sales

Welcome to Sunday Sales, our weekly roundup of the best deals from your favorite stores

Today, we’re spotlighting Banana Republic, where it’s the last day of their 40% off sale—perfect timing to grab their new fall arrivals, most of which are included in the promotion.

Here’s the deal: Banana Republic’s retail prices can be, well, bananas. They rarely offer deep discounts, so if you see something you love, now is the time to pounce.

I still can’t wrap my head around some of their pricing. For example, they’re selling a leather skirt for $800 (yes, really), and their cashmere pieces, which are excluded from the sale, retail for $250 to $300. There’s absolutely no need to spend that much on cashmere from a brand that’s ultimately still part of Gap Inc.

You’ll get better value from Quince, Everlane, or Naadam.

That said, the sale items themselves are a great deal—reasonable prices, a wide range of sizes, lots of natural fibers and beautiful, elevated classics to round out your wardrobe.

I couldn’t resist picking up a few things myself, so let’s dive in!

Happy shopping!

Sunday Sales: Banana Republic

Straight Everywhere Ponte Pant

Their Straight Everywhere Ponte Pants are a fabulous deal.

Ponte is a double knit, so they have structure, but are also soft with some stretch. Great for every day wear at work or for travel.

Available in chocolate, black and navy, in regular and petite sizes.

On sale for 40% off, currently $60.

Also available in wide leg here.

Demi Cotton-Silk Sweater

I’m a fan of a simple, beautifully knit sweater, and this cotton-silk blend is exactly what I want to reach for when pairing it with jeans and loafers.

Layer it with some classic everyday accessories, and you’ve got a timeless wardrobe staple—especially at just $60 on sale!

Available in regular and petite sizes in five colors.

Ribbed Merino Sweater Polo

I grabbed their Ribbed Merino Sweater Polo in ivory (pictured here), which also comes in navy, black, and gray.

It has that classic Ralph Lauren vibe—simple yet elegant. You can pair it with trousers or jeans, easily dressing it up or down. It’s incredibly versatile for fall, winter, and even early spring.

And at just $54 on sale, it’s a fantastic deal!

The Perfect Silk Shirt

Around this time of year, I always get requests for a simple, classic silk blouse—and trust me, they’re not easy to come by.

So when I found this beautiful option, I had to share. Available in five colors, originally priced at $150 but now just $90, it’s made from 100% washable silk—no dry cleaning necessary!

It’s a versatile piece that will pair perfectly with coated or leather trousers, your favorite jeans, skirts, and more.

Sculpted V-Neck Maxi Dress

I think this dress is absolutely stunning.

Did I order it? Absolutely.

Do I have any idea where I’ll wear it? Not yet.

This goes against my usual shopping rules, but I’m confident a party will come up before the year’s end that calls for something this fabulous.

It’s also available in a rich chocolate color, which is equally stunning.

For reference, I’m 5’10” and went with my regular size instead of tall—I’ve found their tall sizes tend to be too long for me.

On sale for $150 it’s pretty spectacular.

Captain’s Blazer

One of our all-time favorites—and a top seller at Banana Republic—is their Captain’s Blazer.

Available in classic black and navy, and in sizes 0 to 20, this blazer is the epitome of timeless style. We recently highlighted it in our feature, The 12 Classic Basics That Will Never Go Out of Style, and it’s easy to see why it made the list.

If you’ve had your eye on this piece, now’s the time to snag it—at $150, you won’t find a better deal anytime soon!

Polo Wrap Sweater Dress

Banana Republic’s Polo Wrap Sweater Dress is an absolute showstopper—perfect for date nights, holiday parties, or those after-work events when you want to look like a million bucks without even trying.

The only dilemma I have is which color to choose: navy, cherry, or ivory? Honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them, and I could easily make a case for adding all three to my wardrobe.

Just a quick note: their tall sizes tend to run extra long, even for me at 5’10”, where they can feel a bit overwhelming. I’ll be sticking with the regular length for this one!

Relaxed Wool Topcoat

It’s no secret that I have a serious love for coats. In my opinion, they’re an essential part of every outfit, especially if you live on the East Coast or in any region with chilly temperatures.

Now, while the regular price of $350 might feel a bit steep for this particular coat, the current sale price of $210 is much more reasonable.

This isn’t your everyday utilitarian coat—it’s more of a statement piece, the kind of topper you throw on for special occasions when you want to elevate your entire look. With its relaxed fit, I suggest sizing down if you’re between sizes or prefer a more tailored silhouette.

The navy color is absolute perfection, and the single side button adds a chic, understated detail. It drapes like a dream, is fully lined, and made from 100% virgin wool, making it an elegant investment for those moments when you need something extra.

Oversized Cropped V-Neck Cotton Sweater

For a sweater that strikes the perfect balance between classic and modern, I their Oversized Cropped V-Neck Cotton Sweater.

Now, I know I sound like a broken record, but let me clarify—this isn’t your typical “cropped” sweater. It hits right at your natural waist, making it ideal for pairing with high-waisted bottoms without showing too much skin.

I’m particularly loving it in the blue (pictured), but it’s also available in timeless white and black. Made from 100% organic cotton, it’s soft, breathable, and an eco-friendly option. And at $72 on sale.

Wool-Blend Turtleneck T-Shirt

Lastly, I couldn’t resist adding their Wool-Blend Turtleneck T-Shirt , in classic black. It’s also available in navy and cream, offering great versatility for any wardrobe.

This turtleneck wears like your favorite tee but is crafted from a cozy wool blend that includes just the right amount of stretch. It’s incredibly versatile—you can wear it as a standout piece on its own or use it as the perfect layering component under any topper in your closet.

At just $42 on sale, I couldn’t pass it up—I went ahead and bought two in black! This piece is destined to become a staple in my fall and winter wardrobe.

I too bought the polo wrap sweater dress in ivory size small to wear to a holiday party. I am 5’8” & it fits to perfection. Looks so classy. Love this community for all the realistic advice.

You are NOT kidding about Banana Republic’s prices! They seem to have gotten even more expensive than they already were! I used to buy their stuff all the time a few years ago, but more recently I just can’t bring myself to part with the amounts they charge for most of their stuff. It’s such a shame because I love their styles.

I usually can figure out what a brands strategy is, but theirs makes no sense to me. I will say, the DO have reasonable pieces, that are even better when they are discounted, but their website is hard to navigate and they don't do a great job of isolating their merchandise. Hope this made it easier to navigate!

EXTRA-Good stuff this fall, Ms Megan! Just got my fall Talbots catalog in the mail! It is a fresh change from the stuff Ive been saying NO to for years from them! I bought solely Talbots for years—in the 90’s til about ‘03. Then I struggled to find a style that is my size 0-2, 5’6.5” that is not ‘too young’ but not “old fart”! Until i found your daily effort, i was blindly going about it. Thank you for all the guidance and help! Just thot you might take a look at the new Talbots, maybe you’ll see something there…the suede cropped jacket on p7–whew! It’s also 30% off till 9-29! Thank you again~!

Thank you very much for the post from Dillard’s! A wonderful store, pretty much the best in this neck of the woods! Appreciate attention directed their way.

I’m wondering if you have any thoughts on why manufacturers seem to be constructing women’s dresses short-waisted. Many women are full-busted, which exacerbates the effect. The white dress you’ve featured is the look I’m referring to. Contrasting is the pink dress with a lovely long line going to the dropped waist. The short-waist dresses seem to fit nearly everyone poorly…your thoughts?

Thank you for the great recommendations!

Thank you for the styling tip on the smock waisted top and shorts. I always second guess my style choices when shorts are involved.

I just got the Banana Republic straight leg black pants you recently recommended. Of course they are way too long. As a size 12 60 year old what length do you recommend. There are so many opinions out there. At the ankle bone, slightly below? I usually wear shoes/sandals of 1 to 2 1/2 inches height. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Love these pretty dresses! Would you give some advice on how to wear a spring(ish) dress for Easter and other occasions when it is still cold and possibly snowing in Ohio? Boots don't seem right but bare legs and sandals don't work! Thank you!!

Hi, Megan! Thanks for this - I have a Nordstrom gift card from a Christmas gift return burning a hole in my pocket 😉 Question: I went on a blazer kick last year, and have 3 new blazers, 2 wool and 1 corduroy. I get bored with button downs all the time, and am having a hard time finding layering cowl/funnel/mock/turtlenecks in a fine rib or jersey fabric. Suggestions?

Hi Ruby, I am a Canadian gal myself, and feel your pain! I am lucky that I live close to the Detroit border, so returns are not too bad. I rarely return, as I try on the clothing for fit, then purchase, but if I really love an item of clothing, I have it tailored. I am not sure where you live, but there are some American clothing sites that cater to Canadians, without all the hassle of paid returns, and free shipping as well depending on the purchase amount. I am not a fan of unnatural fibres like polyester, as my body gets too hot, and the clothing simply pills, especially with all the blended materials, so look for retailers that sell better, quality clothing, with a simple online search. Also, Poshmark has some great brand name items at low cost and new too!

Hi, I read your segments faithfully and fully enjoy your ideas and recommendations. Would you be able to provide info on where to buy similar items featured in CANADA? We are your Northern neighbors and also like to purchase many items you feature. Thanks very much!!

Unfortunately, I don't even have a baseline knowledge of Canadian-based brands and it is truly just me running this site.

I enjoy your posts! I found your comment interesting about using a sequined blazer for multiple festive events over several years. I feel stymied with buying new fun items that might be More expensive because I'm concerned they might be a "wear once" item. You helped me see that some might be things I could use for a number of occasions. I'm wondering if you might do a post (or series of posts) about holiday party clothing "basics" (many of which we may already have) and how to mix in new holiday clothing items. It would be helpful to get some ideas of things we could buy that would complement things like 1) black velvet pants, 2) black velvet blazer, 3) sequin sweater, 4) midi pleated satin skirt (black or other color).

Thanks for the posts on express items. I always forget about that store. I ordered the sweater with the bows. A nice festive piece to add to my holiday wardrobe. Thanks for the recommendations.

I bought the short trench coat in the classic khaki a few weeks ago and could have easily sized down (this does not usually happen to me with JCrew products). I ended up keeping it because I needed it for a trip, and I really do like the way it looks and hangs on me. Would recommend and now I kind of want the navy version!

I picked up the chambray shirt at LOFT last week. So soft and comfortable. It’s set to go in my bag to Italy next month as a versatile layering piece.
