Sunday Sales: Ann Taylor

Polo Sweater

This might be unpopular, but I am a sucker for a polo shirt, especially in the warm weather. They are a lovely, elevated alternative to a basic tee shirt.

This one has stretch and is form-fitted.

It’s available in sizes XS—XXL for $33.60. I went up a size and took the large for a better fit.

And here’s a quick note on the star ratings you see on product pages. This one, for example, has 2.7 stars, which may make you jump off the page. But if you like the look of something, always read the reviews. Someone gave it 1 star because they “couldn’t put it on their wish list,” which has nothing to do with the item’s quality.

Plaid Twill Cropped Mac Jacket

Apparently we’re calling anything not oversized cropped now, so annoying. There is nothing cropped about this sweet novel jacket.

If you like plaid, this will instantly add some fun personality to your neutral basics.

I also loathe how they styled it, because it’s hard to see how versatile it actually is.

But paired with dark jeans, and navy, black or white trousers, it’s a real stand out piece.

It’s run large so go down one size.

Originally priced at $200, it’s now on sale for $78, which is much more reasonable for what it is.

Available in classic and petite XXS -XXL.

Flounce Collared Shirt

This blouse is beautiful and for under $35 it’s a no brainer if you’re looking to add some dramatic, different styled tops to your spring wardrobe.

I picked it up in the medium to pair with jeans for date night.

Available in classic and petite sizes XXS – XXL for $33.60.

Button Split Neck Sweater Tee

Another under $35 option to add some variety to your spring tops. I love the button detail at the shoulder, the flattering split neck and the length.

Pair with jeans and black or navy trouser in either a slim, straight or slightly wide leg.

Available for $33.60 in XXS – XXL.

The Tab Waist Straight Ankle Pant

If you are looking for an under $50 pant for work, consider their Tab Waist Straight Ankle Pant.

Available in navy, black and tan, in classic and petite 00 – 18 for $43.20. They run big so size down.

These should hit at your ankle and look great with flats or heels – so you have lots of options. The navy would be super cute paired with the plaid jacket and floral blouse featured above.

Puff Sleeve Tee

Pretty, simple, and easy to wear.

Pair white, navy or denim of your choice.

I also picked this up in a medium to wear with these jeans I just received and LOVE (featuring them next week) and these gorgeous enamel earrings I found on Amazon.

Plaid Pull On Pencil Skirt

It’s hard to see in the photo, but this navy pull on skirt has a subtle, tonal, chic plaid print that lifts the skirt from basic to interesting.

Available in classic and petite sizes in XXS -XXL for only $37.80.

I LOVE how it’s styled below, such a great example of how to mix neutrals that aren’t black AND how a print can be neutral too.

Italian Collection Pearlized Bow Earrings

We featured these over the holidays and I wore them frequently with a classic cashmere black sweater and my black coated jeans.

They are on sale for $35.94 marked down from $98.

I just got the Banana Republic straight leg black pants you recently recommended. Of course they are way too long. As a size 12 60 year old what length do you recommend. There are so many opinions out there. At the ankle bone, slightly below? I usually wear shoes/sandals of 1 to 2 1/2 inches height. Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Love these pretty dresses! Would you give some advice on how to wear a spring(ish) dress for Easter and other occasions when it is still cold and possibly snowing in Ohio? Boots don't seem right but bare legs and sandals don't work! Thank you!!

Hi Megan, Will you be doing outfit formulas any time soon? I always love those, and find them very helpful. Stay warm!

Hi, Megan! Thanks for this - I have a Nordstrom gift card from a Christmas gift return burning a hole in my pocket 😉 Question: I went on a blazer kick last year, and have 3 new blazers, 2 wool and 1 corduroy. I get bored with button downs all the time, and am having a hard time finding layering cowl/funnel/mock/turtlenecks in a fine rib or jersey fabric. Suggestions?

Hi Ruby, I am a Canadian gal myself, and feel your pain! I am lucky that I live close to the Detroit border, so returns are not too bad. I rarely return, as I try on the clothing for fit, then purchase, but if I really love an item of clothing, I have it tailored. I am not sure where you live, but there are some American clothing sites that cater to Canadians, without all the hassle of paid returns, and free shipping as well depending on the purchase amount. I am not a fan of unnatural fibres like polyester, as my body gets too hot, and the clothing simply pills, especially with all the blended materials, so look for retailers that sell better, quality clothing, with a simple online search. Also, Poshmark has some great brand name items at low cost and new too!

Hi, I read your segments faithfully and fully enjoy your ideas and recommendations. Would you be able to provide info on where to buy similar items featured in CANADA? We are your Northern neighbors and also like to purchase many items you feature. Thanks very much!!

Unfortunately, I don't even have a baseline knowledge of Canadian-based brands and it is truly just me running this site.

I enjoy your posts! I found your comment interesting about using a sequined blazer for multiple festive events over several years. I feel stymied with buying new fun items that might be More expensive because I'm concerned they might be a "wear once" item. You helped me see that some might be things I could use for a number of occasions. I'm wondering if you might do a post (or series of posts) about holiday party clothing "basics" (many of which we may already have) and how to mix in new holiday clothing items. It would be helpful to get some ideas of things we could buy that would complement things like 1) black velvet pants, 2) black velvet blazer, 3) sequin sweater, 4) midi pleated satin skirt (black or other color).

Thanks for the posts on express items. I always forget about that store. I ordered the sweater with the bows. A nice festive piece to add to my holiday wardrobe. Thanks for the recommendations.

Does the animal print blouse have shoulder pads? Or a puff sleeve? I am very broad shouldered, so those dont work for me

I bought the short trench coat in the classic khaki a few weeks ago and could have easily sized down (this does not usually happen to me with JCrew products). I ended up keeping it because I needed it for a trip, and I really do like the way it looks and hangs on me. Would recommend and now I kind of want the navy version!

This is a really nice purse. Please do a column on smallish purses soon, especially ones (other than black) that go well with denim of various shades.

Thank you!

I love the extra high-wasted power chill skort. But I really really like the T-shoes the model is wearing with the skort. Do you know the brand?

I love how you find us such good deals! I think I'm going to get the Old Navy top and get some use out of my strapless bra. For heaven sake, it just sits in my drawer.

Thanks for all you do for us!

Help me understand why designers are always showing long shirts, sweaters etc and then all the models show how to tuck in the front to make it shorter. Just please make a shorter top

Megan Kristel

Sunday 26th of February 2023

Because people have different body types, wants and needs. The front tuck is just a style option. And also there are a lot of shorter tops available in retail.

I love loft. Great place to refresh her wardrobe and add some colorful more and trend pieces. Can you do a blog post on three different ways to wear the chambray denim top? I feel like I want to experiment with this trend of denim on denim, but not really sure how to do it other than wearing it with white pants. As always thanks for the great content.
