Pinterest in Real Life: Making Shorts an Outfit

This content has been archived. It may no longer be relevant

I always say, to make the simplest outfit stand out you have to pay attention to details. Today’s Pinterest in Real Life is an example of how mixing basics with a few trend-focused items can create something unique, fresh and modern.

I am SO READY for a fun and busy summer. Normalcy is undoubtedly something to celebrate, so I’m all about making everyday outfits feel special.

Our inspiration outfit is just that, an ideal everyday outfit for any summer activity, like a girl’s trip to a winery or a day of playing tourist.

Outfit with tan felt hat, chambray shorts, striped Breton top, Striped Bag, and Rock Stud Sandals

Cambray Shorts, $49.50 | Long Sleeve Breton, $40 | Felt Hat, $58 | Rock Stud Flat Sandals, $49 | Straw Tote, $88

Let’s start with the chambray shorts. I like these as a denim alternative when you want something light and polished. Our model has gorgeous legs, so the length of her shorts is perfect. For a similar look, I’m showing a pair with a 3″ inseam from J. Crew Factory on sale for under $25. These. Are. Short. So wear them if you want to show off your steams.

Other, longer options include this high-waisted pair from Old Navy for only $15 in all sizes, or for a fuller cut, these Cargo Chambray shorts from Talbots are under $65 and also come in all sizes.

The inspiration shorts also feature an elastic, gathered waistband. Again, she looks great in them, but when I try a wear something like this, I feel like I’m in a diaper. If you have the same issue, wear traditional flat-front shorts.

Next, you know a striped shirt is a staple in my wardrobe and on my list of must-haves every season. My favorite is from Boden for $40. Pairing a 3/4 or long sleeve top with shorts makes the look more finished and polished. You can do a full or half tuck with your top, depending on what makes you feel most comfortable.

Finally, the accessories are easy but impactful. After featuring hats in Tuesday’s post, I wanted to show you how to wear one in a regular outfit. I mean, how cute is it here? For this look, I went with a mid-size brim option from Madewell for under $50. For all my other picks, you can see our Must-Have Piece post here.

Then, grab any straw bag you already own; the one above is also from J.Crew Factory for under $70

What I think takes this look from good to great are these studded sandals. I’m not sure which ones our inspiration outfit features, but Steve Madden has an affordable pair on sale at Macy’s. These look great with anything from shorts to maxi dresses. You’ll wear them all summer.

This is the first time I looked at Old Navy. I like it that you can choose the model size 4 or 12. That's a great plus!
