Outfits in Real Life: Summer Concert Cool

Here we go, continuing our Outfit in Real Life series.  We had such a nice response to our first post last week.  I big thanks from this busy mom for being so kind. I think the warm reception is a testament to women being frustrated with fake “perfect” images. So just like last week, this is an outfit I wore in real life,  to the U2 concert on Sunday.   All the items are  from my wardrobe. My husband took the photos and we’re still speaking to each other, so that’s nice.  As tempting as it is, these are very obviously untouched …

The wheels of my personal style train start to fall off when I have to get dressed for things like barbecues, festivals, and concerts. Not like I regularly go to barbecues, festivals, and concerts, but when I do have the chance, I’m at a loss for what to wear. It’s like if I can’t wear a pantsuit, or a sheath dress I have no idea what I’m doing. I’m at a weird age too, where I’m well aware that I’m not in my 20s, but I’d still like to look current. Most important I don’t want to look like I’m trying too hard. It’s a tricky balance.

Sunday night I was out of my mind excited to go to the U2 concert. The weather forecast was HOT, and it was going to be a long day of bar hopping, meeting up with some friends in the parking lot, and eventually making our way into the concert. I’m not the tailgating kind (because I can’t hang that long), but on the few occasions I’ve done it, I’ve glanced around and realized I looked like a suburban mom on her night off. Even though that’s exactly what I am, I thought it would be a nice change for the concert to look less precious, and try to fit in more.

Top, $48.00, Shorts, $69.99, Sandal, $59.99, Bag, $58.00

I have to admit; I was impressed with how quickly I pulled this look together.  The top is from our shop. It’s so light and breezy; it was perfect for a long day in the heat. The off the shoulder style makes it modern, and the cut brings in a pretty, feminine quality.  I’m wearing it in a large.  The medium worked too but the large felt a tiny bit better.  If you order, size up.

I paired it with these Joe’s distressed shorts. I found them at Off 5th (Sak’s outlet) last year. They are so perfect and comfortable. The contrast of polished and distressed  in an outfit is one of my most favorite combinations.

Because it was going to be a long day, the last thing I wanted to deal with was blisters or any kind of uncomfortable shoe. I wore my new go-to sandal by Sarto Franco Sarto. After nine hours on my feet, in the sun, these still felt incredibly comfortable. I also needed a crossbody for the day, so I could be hands-free and meet the size requirements for handbags at Lincoln Financial Field (always check before you go to any stadium). I carried this bag from the shop, and it was ideal. I like a crossbody that allows you to take your regular size essentials – having to switch out and downsize what you need is a pain in the neck.

Finally, adding some polish with makeup helps bring a look together, especially when it’s such a simple outfit.  I didn’t wear much makeup, but I love the combination of red lip, white tee and denim.  Here I’m wearing  a Nars lip pencil in red.  Finally, I’ve made no secret of being the palest of humans.  It doesn’t bother me as much as it used to when I was younger.  However, I’m super insecure about wearing anything short.  To get a healthy glow, I use Soap & Glory Instant Sun Kissed Lotion.  It’s not a self-tanner, it’s a tinted body lotion that gives enough color to warm up your skin.  I apply it with an old St. Tropez tanning mitt, to keep my hands clean.  It drys quickly and lasts until you wash it off.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Great look. I love the shorts & the length. I want that to embrace the off the shoulder trend but scares me when I realize I have to wear a strapless bra! Any brand you recommend?
