How to Wear White Jeans in the Fall

On the East Coast, the leaves are just starting to change, and you can smell fall in the air. Which means it’s time to begin to transition into our cooler weather wardrobe. But before you go and pack away some of your summer staples, there are a few you should keep on hand, like your white jeans.  Today, we’ll break down how to wear white jeans in the fall, with inspiration using pieces you probably already have hanging in your closet.

I came up with three looks you can easily recreate, with items that are key pieces for a fall wardrobe. You’ll see me repeat these throughout the next few months.

To build your look, wear whatever jean works best for your body type: skinny, straight, or subtle bootcut. As much as I love a distressed jean, save them for the warmer weather. Skip styles that have rips and tears, frayed hems, and other embellishments.

For today’s post, I’m using these best selling white skinny jeans from NYDJ

Outfit One: Camel and White

Blazer, $228, Tee, $35, Bag, $230, Flats, $124

Pairing tan and white together is such a gorgeous combination. Here, I took a simple white tee from Loft and used it to create a column of color. The tee is a little oversized, providing a relaxed vibe.

To layer on top, this go-to blazer from J.Crew in camel is divine. It’s almost always available online, in petite, missy, and tall sizes up to 24. Right now, it’s 40% off with the code ADDTOBAG making it under $140

Then, play with neutrals to pull the look together. Add some texture with a tonal, embossed flat, and a top handle bag by Marc Jacobs on a fantastic sale at Off Fifth give structure and style.

Outfit Two: Black and White

Headband, $23, Earrings, $48, Sweater, $37, Flats, $59

Next, the easiest look to recreate: black and white. Simply grab your favorite black sweater like this reader favorite from Banana Republic. It’s a silk and cashmere blend, with a relaxed fit in sizes XXS – XXL and it’s under $40.

Then, black suede loafers like these from Nine West, under $50 studs and a tortoise headband from J.Crew.

Outfit Three: Olive and White

Jacket, $109, Bootie, $130Tee, $30, Crossbody, $65

This look is my favorite, using items I’ve featured for years.

Take a striped tee, you can use any neutral color combination, here I used gray and white. Then, layer an olive green jacket, like this timeless staple from LL Bean. Add our go-to Sam Edelman tan suede booties and a black crossbody bag from Sole Society.

  1. What a wonderful – and timely – post! I was just wondering today about how to wear white jeans seasonally. And I LOVE the crossbody bag. Thank you, Megan, for continuing to put out such helpful, informed and engaging content

  2. Great find on QVC!!! I go there OFTEN looking for things and am usually pretty successful. THAT said… this bracelet is now unavailable. 🙁 QUESTION: could a beautiful, very nice leopard print flat or clean looking heel work with this????

  3. Beautiful!!! Love the camel…as a blond, I’ve avoided this color since it washes me out (esp once that summer tan fades!). This richer shade tells me to try again looking for the darker shade! Thanks for the inspiration!

  4. Thank you Megan, I had picked up some great white jeans and it’s still warmer here on the west coast so wanted to transition my look. I can shop my closet.

  5. Great post. I tend to leave my beautiful white NYDJ Jeans in the closet in summer (too hot for jeans) so this is perfect motivation to get them out. I have winter coloring so I never wear rust, olive or camel. I will try the black version with a scarf to bring some color to my face. Thanks.

Are the Spanxx pants (from your earlier post) leggings or more skinny in styling? Is there a difference? Are leggings still in style?

  6. Wow – what timing! I literally was in my closet this morning, mourning that it was after Labor Day and I needed to put away my white jeans. I stood there and asked myself, “How can I wear white jeans in the fall?” Thanks for this, perfect timing!

  7. I have always struggled with what color shoes to wear with white jeans (other than white)! This post has given me the confidence to wear black/brown, etc. with my white jeans. Thanks!

  8. Nice post! Ironically, before I saw this post, I actually put on my new white jeans that are bootcut from NYDJ for the first time today – since it’s been too hot to wear them… I bought them from Nordstrom based your rec. from a prior post earlier in the summer! I paired mine with a plain white tank (an Everlane find) with a longish kimono-styled floral “shacket” from Anthro with brown croc block-heeled sandals and a chunky necklace! I’m ready to go from WFH to Happy Hour 😉

  9. Love these outfits and this is great timing as I have a date with my husband tonight and may try one of these. 🙂 And, I love that these all use closet staples.

  10. I bought those booties back when you first recommended them. They were beautiful, but needed to be stretched. I brought them to the cobbler in March, right before the shutdown. I forgot about about them! I saw them in your post today, searched my purses (not much need for them lately), and found my receipt. They still have them – so excited to pick them up tomorrow. The long zipper pull is very elegant. Thanks!

  11. Thank you for the great post !
Should the white jeans be an inch or 2 above the ankle when wearing the bootie /flat so they dont look dowdy ?
