On those mornings when you’re running late and need to be dressed 10 minutes ago, it’s a gift to have an assortment of pieces in your closet, ready to go, that work together.
And that’s just what we have in today’s How to Wear it.
So while technically, we’re highlighting this best-selling J.Crew collar sweater from our Monday Round-up, every item featured below adds mix and match value to your wardrobe.
Some pieces will look familiar, others we’re sharing for the first time.
How to Wear Collared V-neck Sweater
This style sweater, a hybrid of a v-neck and a polo, is super popular this season, so you’ll see versions of this in retail at all price points.
Even within the J.Crew family, you have options.
Above is from J.Crew, in the color grape (that sadly already sold out). But there are several other colors to choose from, including a beautiful green and lilac. Use code SHOPFALL and take 40% off at checkout. Available in XXS – 2X.
At J.Crew FACTORY, they have a similar style that is slightly slimmer through the body, in a different range of colors in XXS – 3X, for $49.
You don’t need to add much to these looks. We’re talking throw-it-on and go, no fuss, but still thoughtful and pulled together when paired with the right pieces.
With Jeans
Perfect Vintage Jeans, $128 | Utility Boots, $259 | Small Messenger Bag, $228 |Topaz Studs, $58
If you want to transition out of skinny jeans but find the advertised alternatives too wide and baggy (raises hand), then consider a slim straight leg, like this pair from Madewell.
Skinny jeans grip the leg and are tight around the ankle, while a slim straight gives the same look without being skin tight. And the hem is away from the body.
It’s a subtle difference but will help keep your look modern. (And remember, I’m still a fan of skinnies – but more on that in a later post).
Then, grab a boot.
You have a ton of options here.
Any Chelsea boot will work, so if you bought the one by Caslon at Nordstrom, wear them here.
I recently discovered that Rothy’s has boots, so I ordered their Utility Boot, in Tobacco, above and am very impressed.
They are slimmer than a Chelsea boot, and I like the two-tone detail.
I have both boots and will wear them interchangeably.
Where should your hem hit?
Great question.
You want the top of the boot to fit under the hem of your jean. And from there, it’s up to you. If you look at the image on Rothy’s website of the boot and jeans, that’s a perfect length.
And we’re keeping accessories straightforward.
Wear your everyday jewelry, layer some bracelets and a simple pair of earrings. I like these white topaz studs from Mejuri.
Finally, a neutral crossbody bag. The one above is by Kate Spade, but any clean-lined bag will work.
With Black Pants
Slim Leg Pants, $79 | Skimmer Flats, $90 |Gold Hoops, $14 | Watch, $150 |Tote, $398
I’m hearing from many readers who are returning to the office, at least on a hybrid schedule.
So rebuilding a wear-to-work wardrobe might feel daunting.
You need the basics, like a pair of black pants, to get started.
Featured above is a pair of slim pants by Nordstrom’s private label brand, Halogen. They come in 00 – 18 and are just under $80.
Plus size? Talbots has similar pants in plus and plus petite from size 14 – 24.
Prefer full-leg pants?
Try the Ann Taylor Trousers we shared in our post yesterday. They come in a range of sizes, including petite and tall.
Yesterday we also introduced these Colo Haan slingbacks, on sale at Nordstrom Rack. They are a fantastic shoe option if you want the elegance of a heel but a flat.
Next, a bag.
The under $500 workbag category is frustrating. They are either too big, too small, or covered in logos. But the Elena Grande Tote by M. Gemi is the Goldilocks of the bunch, it’s just right.
I like a top handle tote; this one has a ton of room; it’s made in Italy, with elegant details like double-faced leather lining and metal feet on the bottom.
Finally, I’m back with my $15 Amazon hoops and an affordable tank watch that adds just the right amount of sophistication.
