January Reader Faves

Readers' Favs for January 2020

Let’s officially close out January with a round-up of your favorite items from the month.

If you are new to our community, we feature the top five reader favorites from every month as a way to help us collectively build our wardrobe. It’s so fun to see what you responded to.

This month, we have a designer feeling sweater for under $40, updated leggings, an affordable way to upgrade your pajama drawer, everyday sneakers, and an over-the-top, splurge-worthy clutch.

January Reader Faves

Waffle Knit Sweater

Old Navy Waffle knit cowl neck sweater

Waffle-Knit Cowl Neck Sweater, $42

This sweater is such a great find! I’m embarrassed to admit what I’ve spent on sweaters in the past and didn’t like any of them as much as this one. You can see, it’s slightly longer in the back so you can wear it with leggings, but it’s not overwhelming.

Available in six colors in regular, petite and tall. Featured is the color “moonstone,” a sophisticated grey-blue. You can also get a cream and a light mauve that is gorgeous. The black and grey options are on sale for under $40.

You can see me in it here:

Ponte – Knit Pants

Old Navy Ponte Knit Pants

Ponte-Knit Pants, $18

Speaking of leggings, these Ponte-knit pants are at Old Navy for under $20. The Ponte-knit makes them thicker than a traditional legging, so you don’t feel so “exposed.” They get hundreds of five-star reviews, also available in regular, petite, and tall. I’m wearing them in the photo above.

Satin Pajamas

Satin Pajamas from Amazon

Satin Pajamas, $26

We may need to have a virtual pajama party because we all bought these in multiples! For under $30, these are an affordable upgrade for your pajama drawer, which, if you’re anything like me after 2020, needed to be burned.
They come in dozens of colors and seem to fit everyone well.

Below I’m wearing pale pink, and my oldest is in a pretty green. I’m wearing a large, Maddie is in a small.

Allbirds Sneakers

Allbirds Sneakers

Allbirds Sneakers, $95

If you need a daily sneaker that is more polished than what you wear to the gym, pick up a pair of Allbirds. They are incredibly comfortable, stylish, machine washable, available in a dozen color combinations and under $100.

Leopard Clutch

Leopard Clutch

Leopard Clutch, $275

It’s been a full year since any fashion-focused, expensive, not-a-basic bag made our top seller list.

Where are you going??

It doesn’t matter; I’m thrilled for you, and considering this a silver development – maybe we’ll have fun places to go in the spring.

This splurge-worthy clutch by Claire V is a timeless classic you’ll carry for years.

Reader Five Faves: December 2020

December readers' Favs

The last bit of housekeeping to close out 2020 around here is to round up our Reader Faves for December. Seeing what you love every month is one of the most helpful bits of information because it allows me to continue to build on the pieces you actually have.

What’s so interesting about this collection is that it has the makings of a capsule wardrobe.

The pieces and colors work together beautifully, and the prices are fantastic.

Five Faves of December

December readers' Favs

Let’s talking quickly about capsule wardrobes. They are all the rage over on Pinterest. The basic idea is that you have a thoughtfully selected small grouping of clothes that work together in multiple ways creating a minimalist’s dream closet.

The thing is, I’m not a minimalist. Instead, I focus on balancing value and practicality with the fun and drama of fashion. I’m much more concerned with feeling fabulous than limiting your choices. And personally, I enjoy the process and creativity that comes with getting dressed.

However, there’s a lot we can learn from the idea of a capsule wardrobe. I don’t like waste and want you to get the most out of your purchases. So I look at the concept of the capsule wardrobe more broadly. Instead of one capsule, I look to have  a series of capsules, layering in pieces that help expand your options based on what you already have.

Our December Faves is a great example of pieces that work together, and also will help build out additional capsules when paired with pieces you already own.

Popover Tunic

J. Crew High Low Popover Tunic

Popover Tunic Top, $32

When I think of a daily “uniform” my mind goes right to a crisp white button down. The look is timeless but they can feel restrictive. That’s why something like this tunic top is such a great piece. You get the same classic look with a little bit more room to move and a more practical length to pair with slim line pants.

This one from J.Crew Factory is only $32 and comes in sizes XS – 3X.

Zella Live In Leggings

Zella Live in Leggings

High Waist Leggings, $59

It would appear we’re not starting off 2021 any different than how we ended 2020, and with many of us headed into winter picking up some fresh loungewear is a must.

I have loved these leggings for years. They are just the thing to pair with an oversized sweater, or tunic (like the one featured above). They are high waisted, thick, but not uncomfortable, and was so well.

Available in XXS – XXL here and plus size up to 3X here

Riding Boots

Sam Edelman Penny Boot

Penny Boot, $190

I was so thrilled to see a riding boot on the list. After a year of slippers and sneakers, these stunning yet sturdy boots will be a favorite for years. I have a similar pair from Frye (in black and cognac) and I’ve worn them for almost a decade.

Wear them with leggings or skinny jeans paired with a long sweater or blazer.

Crewneck Sweater

J.Crew Factory crewneck sweater

Crewneck Sweater, $19.50

Another J.Crew Factory find this crewneck sweater is delicious. It’s so soft, simple and only $20. Easy peasy.

The weight of this allows for lots of flexibility. You can certainly wear it alone, or layer it over a blouse or under a blazer (like the one below!). Available in several colors, camel (above) is my favorite, in XXS – 3X.

Oversized Blazer

Old Navy Houdstooth Oversized Blazer

Oversized Blazer, $35

One of my absolute favorite finds of the year is this oversized blazer from Old Navy for only $35. It’s perfect for throwing on for Zoom calls (ugh) or pair with dark jeans, the J Crew sweater, and riding boots for lunch outside.

To get the most out of this piece, pick it up in the houndstooth option (above); you’ll get more looks out of it since it will pair better with black, dark denim, and even – if you’re brave – white bottoms.

Available in regular, tall and petite.

Our Wardrobe Challenge Starts on Friday!

Reader Five Faves November 2020

A picture showing the five top items in November

Every month, I look at our analytics and listen to your feedback to round up the top five best sellers from the previous month to help you continue to build your wardrobe.

Our little community here is unique in that I can speak to so many of you personally, in either our Private Facebook group or in our INSIDER membership.

This kind of access allows me to find out precisely what you are struggling with, searching for, and enjoying the most. So what I featured in our monthly Reader Fave round-up are not only bestsellers but most loved.

Ideally, this series should help you fill any voids in your wardrobe or discover an extra piece that will help create even more options.

Reader Five Faves November 2020

A picture showing the five top items in November

For the first time in almost a year, our favorites do not feature any sweats! Instead, we have a fabulous collection of size-inclusive options, all at fantastic prices.

Please note, inventory is selling out quickly and prices are subject to change.

Stay at Home Loafer

The starling Loafer

The Starling Loafer, $95

If you stay home this holiday season and entertain a smaller group, treat yourself to these loafers by Birdie. Designed to be a hybrid of a slipper and a loafer, they were specifically created for women who want to look chic but stay comfy while hosting at home.

As the brand grew in popularity, so did their assortment. You can pick up a gorgeous bejeweled or embellished option, but if you’re just starting out, go for the timeless velvet suede. And don’t worry, you can (and should!) wear these out of the house too.

$30 Sheath

Old Navy Gray Sheath Dress

Sheath Dress, $29

This Old Navy dress is an absolute steal, available in sizes regular, petite, and tall up to an XXL. The combination of a structured sheath done in a casual Ponte knit is what makes it so versatile. Wear to the office with boots, or with sneakers to run errands, and when we can start to travel again, it will make a great airport dress.

Basic Layer
J. Crew crewneck sweater

Crew Neck Sweater, $29

J.Crew Factory has long been a go-to for basics better prices. Last month I featured this extra cozy crew neck sweater, available in seven colors in sizes XXS – 3X, and everyone stocked up.

It will stretch a bit but size up if you plan to wear it as a layer over a shirt. I keep it simple and throw it on with jeans and ankle boots – and, because it’s 2020, my kids then ask me why I’m so “dressed up.” lol

Oversized Boyfriend Blazer

Old Navy houndstooth oversized blazer

Oversized Blazer, $38

Another Old Navy gem, this oversized blazer is fun and affordable, available in regular, petite, and tall sizes. It’s supposed to be long and loose. You can certainly take it to the office, just note it will be a more relaxed look than a tailored one. I love it paired with light-washed jeans and sneakers; you’ll look super cool even if your not. 😉

Cold Weather Boots

Cole Haan Hiking Boots

Hiking Boot, $150

Finally, so many readers wrote in requesting recommendations for a cold-weather boot. I found these Cole Haan Hiking Boots on sale at Nordstrom, with dozens of five-star reviews, in black, brown, and white (above). They are shearling trim, waterproof, warm yet lightweight.

Personally, I wear the Sorel Joan of Arch boot (in black). Our winters on the east coast range from mild to back-to-back blizzards, so I’m happy I have them. They are, however, very heavy. If you need something to keep you warm but lightweight, go with the Cole Haan; if you need a serious, stomp-through-the-snow kind of boot, go with the Sorel.

Reader Five Faves October 2020

October Reader Favs

How is it November

Let’s round the corner of what feels like the fastest and longest year ever, by rounding up your favorites from October. You’ll see these items in up coming posts, so you can continue to build out your wardrobe with mix and match pieces.

Reader Five Faves October 2020

October Reader Favs

Long Sleeve White Tee

White Long Sleeve Tee

White Long Sleeve Tee, $8

It’s hard to find a simple long sleeve white tee that isn’t see through, but Old Navy has one that is only $8. Stock up on these so you have a few on hand and they stay fresh and white. Use them under vests and scarfs, or with casual bottoms and a denim jacket. I even have a few I pair with pajama bottoms.

Available in regular, tall and petite in a ton of colors up to an XXL.

Quilted Jacket

Insulated Quilted Jacket

Insulated Quilted Jacket, $139

I am so happy I picked this up at the Nordstrom Sale to replace an old and tired J. Crew barn jacket. It’s lightweight, yet surprisingly warm. Just the thing for early morning walks or waiting for the kids to finish up practice.

Available in black and navy (also in white but it’s ugly), sizes XS – XL, runs true.

Peplum Top

Peplum Top

Peplum Top, $40 ON SALE FOR $20

This pretty polka dot peplum top has been on the Fave’s list for a few months now. Today, it’s on sale for $20 (sizing is limited).

Readers have been posting about how much they love it over in our Private Facebook Group. To make it seasonally appropriate, wear dark jeans, a long warm cardigan, and a pair of suede boots.

Cargo Jogger

Cargo Jogger

Cargo Jogger, $63

Perhaps the real hero piece of 2020 is the jogger. This more polished version of a sweatpant is everything you want in a work-from-home staple, but don’t limit them to sitting in front of your computer. I plan on wearing the black version of this to low key holiday gatherings at home, with a cashmere sweater and ballet flats.

Grab these while they are still in stock, either green (above) or black, in regular and petite XXS -XXL.

Sherpa Tunic

Sherpa Tunic

Sherpa Tunic, $40

To say I love a cozy half-zip is an understatement, and apparently, you do too, because every time I share one, it goes right to the top of the best-seller list. This one from Old Navy is especially nice because it is slightly longer in the back, making it perfect to pair with leggings (we featured it with leather leggings here).

Available in three colors, chocolate (above), black, and “moon door,” which looks like a white/grey in sizes XS – XXL.

August 2020: Reader’s Top Five Faves

Well Dressed - August Readers' Favs

Our Reader Favorites Series rounds up the Top Five Favorites from the month. Think of this round-up as recommendations from our community of like-minded women. If they love it, you probably will too!

It’s always fun to see what ends up being popular each month. The Nordstrom Sale heavily drives August’s faves, and the pieces below reflect some kind of return to “real” clothing (yay!!!). For the first time in months there is not a jogger or sneaker on the list!

The line up below is ideal for not only transition weather but going back to work in some capacity.

Let’s take a look:

August Top Five Faves

August Readers' Favs

This line up make me extra happy.  These five pieces are almost a capsule in and of themselves and any one piece will upgrade your current closet.  Many of you have these already so let us know what you love in the comments below.

Side Slit Cardigan

Halogen Side Slit Cardigan in Cobblestone

Cardigan, $41

This cardigan is perfect for transitioning from summer to early fall. It’s available in all sizes, petite, and missy up to a size 18 and is currently 40% off its original price. Pick it up in cobblestone (above), black, or pale pink. Pair it with any summer sleeveless top to bring the look into the new season, or throw it over a cotton tee and joggers while working from home.

Peplum Top

J.Crew Peplum Top

Peplum Top, $64

I absolutely LOVE this top. Last month, I featured it in a Buy Now, Wear Now and Later Post and it quickly became the best selling piece of the entire month. I was lucky enough to see it on a few readers who shared pictures with me and it’s adorable!

Right now, it’s on final sale at J. Crew with the promo BYESUMMER it’s marked down to ONLY $25!! Sizes run up to a 14.

Sheath Dress

Tahari Sheath Dress

Sheath Dress, $128

This simple sheath is everything we look for in a classic go-to-work dress. It has figure flattering ruching at the waist, a short sleeve, and just the right amount of stretch. When I traveled for work (remember that?) this is what I would throw in my suitcase with a neutral-to-me heel. It made packing and getting dressed for early mornings so easy. Sizes are limited, available in navy and pink.

The “Perfect” Black Pant

Spanx Perfect Black Pant

Black Pants, $128

Like a legging, but a little better, these Spanx pants have been getting rave reviews from readers who picked them up during the Nordstrom sale. You can wear them with anything from a cozy sweater to a casual structured blazer (below). Available in missy and plus at Nordstrom. Petite? They offer a similar style in petite sizes at Macy’s.

Cotton Blazer

Gibson Cotton Blend Blazer in Red

Blazer, $98

Finally, this cotton blend blazer comes in six colors, including the gorgeous red option above. This is what you wear when you want something more elevated than a cardigan but still casual-ish. I like it with jeans, or ponte pants for a polished and relaxed look. Sizes are limited in some colors but available in missy and plus.

June 2020: Reader’s Top Five Favs

The Well Dressed Life Top 5 for June

Our Reader Favorites Series rounds up the Top Five picks from the month. It’s based on our analytics and feedback from you.

Think of this round-up as a “must have” list generated by our readership. It’s always fun to see what ended up being popular from the contented I lined up a the end of May.

June was all over the place. Opened! Closed! Opened! Closed!

Who knows what is going on anymore.

From chatting with many readers, it sounds like we are all just taking it day by day. What else can we do?

Personally, I’m trying to savor every second of warm, beautiful weather because it feels like the summer is flying by despite being the longest year ever.

So as we get ready for whatever July is about to throw at us, we may as well do it looking good!

June 2020: Reader’s Top Five Favs

The Well Dressed Life Top 5 for June

Once again, you picked some great pieces that can easily be worn now or later, whether you’re working from home, headed back into the office, or having dinner outside.

Let’s break them down.

Classic Striped Top

Boden Striped TeeStriped Top, $38

This striped top from Boden will end up being a reader favorite for all of 2020 – that’s how popular it is.

Boden actually makes two options. This one is a slimmer fit. They call this a “slash-neck” top, which is the same as a boatneck. It’s available in sizes 2 -22.

Your other option is their traditional Breton top, with a slightly more relaxed fit, also in sizes 2 – 22.

Either is fantastic, it just depends on the fit you like best.

Amazon Romper

Olive green romperRomper, $31

So much of the clothing I buy on Amazon gets returned. I try out all the popular picks that the Instagram influencers are pushing, to see if any of it is worth it. Remember, most of these influencers are getting paid by Amazon to peddle their merchandise.

And most of it is crap.

But I discovered this romper on my own (thank you very much) and it’s so great. It’s soft and cozy, just thing to throw on after the beach or pool, or if you’re simply hanging at home.

You can’t beat the price, and it washes well. I take it out of the dryer when it’s still damp and lay it flat to finish.

You can see it on me here:

Poplin Top

Striped Puffed Sleeve Blouse from Banana RepublicPuff-Sleeved Blouse, $63 (ON SALE FOR $25)

This blouse is on sale for $25 so if you need something for Zoom calls or you’re headed back to the office, grab it while there are still sizes. You can pair it with navy summer trousers, or simple white shorts. It’s available in “regular” and tall sizes.

Banana Republic has been incredibly dependable during this shut down. There shipping is still fast, and their inventory is one of the few in retail that is still offering a solid size range.

Linen Pants

Old Navy Black Linen PlantsLinen Pants, $30

Need a lightweight alternative to shorts? Give these linen pants from Old Navy a try. I live in these bottoms. They are currently under $30 and available in a range of colors in “regular,” tall and petite up to an XXL.

Skip the color “feather” it’s see through.

To style them, you can keep it stay-at-home simple with a cotton tee, or pair it with a silk cami and heels for dinner outside.

Tinted Moisturizer

Bare Minerals Tinted MoisturizerTinted Moisturizer, $33

There are a lot of reasons I don’t regularly feature beauty products. First, I’m not an expert, second, I’m loyal to what I use so I don’t have a lot of “new” recommendations, and finally, beauty brands are notoriously limited in shade offerings.

But bareMinerals has always done a great job including the fairest (me) to the deepest shades. I love this tinted moisturizer for days you need light coverage with a smoothing effect. It feels good on your skin and doesn’t clog your pores. A little goes a long way.

May 2020: Reader’s Top 5 Favs

The Well Dressed Life Readers' Top 5 for May

Our Reader Favorites series rounds up the Top Five picks from the previous month. It’s based on our analytics and conversations, and feedback from you.

Today’s picks look a little boring, but they pack a big punch if you’re trying to either minimize your wardrobe or build it out with versatile pieces.

May 2020: Reader Top 5

Sam Edelman White Sneaker

Think of these items like the best of the best of all the options we featured in May.

Linen Joggers

Linen JoggersLinen Joggers, $35

I own these in the color above (blue – narrow stripe) and navy. They are great shorts alternative. Yes, they are linen, so they do wrinkle, but, surprisingly, that doesn’t bother me. I wore the nave pair last weekend with this popular white top from J.Crew Factory, and these Tory Burch sandals

They run true to size, available up to a size 18.

Tie-Front Shirt

Banana Republic Tie Front ShirtTie Front Shirt, $35 (ON SALE FOR $17)

This simple tie front top from Banana Republic comes in sizes up to and including a XXL and petite options. As I write this it is an additional 50% off, making it about $17. Grab a few colors if you can, it’s available in white, blue, a pretty yellow and black.

They say it’s “cropped” but it’s not. It sits at your natural waist. So if you find that top are always too long, this would be a good option for you. Wear it with your favorite summer jeans, shorts or joggers.

Jeggings

Butter JeggingsJeggings, $39

Perhaps the best and most affordable pair of jeggings that look like skinny jeans I’ve ever seen. First of all, these are under $40 – that’s Old Navy kind of pricing.

Second, they fit fabulously. And they still fit me after three months of barely leaving the house. They are available in black (above) and a dark blue denim (here). Sizing is decent, from a 24 – 34 waist.

Eyelet Shirt

LOFT eyelet shirtEyelet Shirt, $35

I love, love, love this sweet top. You can’t go wrong with a closet full of white tops. By adding some texture and detail – like the eyelet here, you get something that feels basic but looks special. That’s how you easily elevate an outfit.

Wear this with summer denim, shorts, or even with skirt to work. Sizes option include “regular” up to an XL and plus size.

White Sneakers

Sam Edelman White SneakerWhite Sneaker, $40

Finally, if you’ve been looking for a simple pair of white sneakers to wear with everything from jeans to dresses, pick up these by Sam Edelman. They are on sale at Nordstrom Rack for $40 in almost all sizes.

When you wear a white sneaker, you want them to look slim on your foot, and not have a ton of detail. These have just enough to look fresh, without being distracting.
