Basics Building: Navy and White Striped Top

Basics Building: Navy and White Striped Top

We are continuing our basics building series, where I highlight one key piece from our Classic Wardrobe Checklist. Today, I’m featuring the striped top, in advance of its upcoming Wear it Three Way post.

I remember being a kid, seeing pictures of Jackie Kennedy wearing a slim pair of pants and a perfectly fitted striped top, and being instantly drawn in. How could one person be so incredibly chic?

Since then, she and other icons (like the forever beautiful Carolina Herrera) have been my style guideposts. Their perfectly pulled together, well-edited, subtle, and approachable style has been my style goal and the basis of my entire business.

Perhaps, one of the core pieces of any style is the striped top. It’s undoubtedly the holy grail of classic American style and is foundational if you love French girl style. But no matter where you land stylistically, a striped top will serve you well hanging in your closet.

The Classic Striped Top

Clockwise from Left: One, $24  |  Two, $25  |  Three, $38  |  Four, $30

For today’s post, I rounded up a few options, to  cover as many sizes as possible.

First, this one from Old Navy. it comes in missy, petite and tall, up to a size XXL. Right now, with all of the extra at check out discounts it’s about $17. It’s a relaxed fit, with three quarter sleeves and in comfortable boatneck style.

Next up, this crew neck, long sleeve top from Everlane. It’s as basic and classic as it gets, with a reasonable price tag. If you’ve been curious about Everlane, their better basics are a good place to start. I find they run slightly small, so if you are in-between sizes, go up one. I’m a big fan of them as a brand; my one call out is that their sizes are still limited and could benefit from a more inclusive range.

Boden is another retailer that really nails the striped top. Generally speaking, they are even too preppy for me, but their basics are well made and they have an inclusive size range up to a 20/22.

I LOVE this option, with a split top neck (similar to a boatneck) and slim body. This is more fitted and longer so if you are tall (like me) it’s a nice option.

Finally, I included this square neck option from Gap since a boatneck, or crew neckline isn’t flattering on everyone. If you have a fuller bust, and want to try out the look, this might be a good alternative.

A Perfectly Polished Fleece for Work From Home Days

I’ve been home-based for most of my career. As a working mom, I can tell you that, even though it comes with its own unique set of challenges, I would pick working from home over going into an office any day.

Hopefully, as we return to normal, more companies will be generous with their work from home opportunities. Countless studies show that a flexible work environment helps attract and retain female workers, and more women in the workforce, particularly in leadership positions, are better for everyone and everything.

So today, I want to share one piece of advice, especially if you’ve recently been thrown into a virtual work environment, that has helped me succeed in my roles at work and home over the years and that is: ignore the idea that you have to have set work hours.

I know that goes against everything you hear and read online. But the truth is if you work from home, have kids underfoot, are managing a home, busy family life, and the new challenge of homeschooling, there is no way possible you can also work a strict 9 – 5.

So don’t even try.

Routine Instead of a Schedule

Instead, find a routine that works for your internal clock and your family’s schedule while still allowing you to be mindful of your work responsibilities, knowing that every day will look a little different.

Over the last few months, my best, most productive days are the ones where we follow a loose and unconventional schedule.

We have two-morning routines, one for me and Bri before the kids get up, and one to get the kids moving and set up for school.

Bri and I tag team during the day, focusing on who has the most pressing deadline. That might mean I cover the kids when he has a call, or he jumps in when I need to meet a deadline.

One of us stops work around 5 to start dinner (or these days order something) while the other wraps up a call or project, we try to take a walk as a family, and spend time with the kids.

Then, we have two nighttime routines. One that gets the kids either to bed or settled for the night, so we can get in a few more hours of work, and then we have a simple routine to end our night later on.

Instead of trying to replicate your usual office hours, consider an alternative schedule that will allow you the flexibility you need right now to wear all the hats.

And of course, try to get dressed for the day.

It makes all the difference in your mood and outlook.

I featured this pale pink fleece over on Instagram a few weeks ago, and I’ve received so many messages from followers that they ordered it and LOVE it – I wanted to share it here too.

It comes in four colors: black, light grey, oatmeal and pink, up to a 3X!

Perfectly Polished Work From Home Fleece

Charles River Tunic Pullover

I make no exaggeration when I say I wear this several times a week. It’s the ideal weight for this time of year, when the mornings have a little chill in the air. I wear it with leggings for walks, or comfy jeans and sneakers. The quality is surprisingly fantastic.

What makes this a real winner, though, is the length. So often, these kind of pieces feel just a little short in the body and then shrink over time. Because this is cut like a tunic, it covers your bottom!

You can see it in my below.

I ordered the large (because it’s from Amazon and I always size up), but I could easily have worn the medium. I’ve washed it several times already and it hasn’t shrunk at all.

Basics Building: The Perfect Cashmere Sweater

Everlane Cashmere Sweater

Today, we continue our series, Basics Building. We’re using some of the time we have staying safe at home to walk through our Wardrobe Checklist. In each post I’ll offer my pick for one of those must-have items.

I’m prioritizing the order of these posts based on the season, inventory, and need. As usual, all of my recommendations are based off my personal experience. I don’t work or represent any of these brands.

Think of it like this, if you were one of my personal shopping clients, these are the pieces I would have put in your dressing room. Fun, right?

As we work through the checklist you’ll start to build a modern, yet timeless wardrobe.

For this post, I highlighting, perhaps, one of my favorite sweaters of all time, the Everlane cashmere crew.

It’s fabulous.

Everlane Cashmere Crew

Everlane Cashmere Sweater

Sweater, $100

Cashmere is one of the best kinds of little luxuries, isn’t it?

You can wear a simple cashmere sweater with your best pair of black pants to the office, and with cut off shorts at the beach. It’s the epitome of my own personal style: classic, relaxed, and subtly refined.

But, as with everything, prices can be all over the place. So let me break this down: you don’t have to spend a small fortune to get high quality. Just in organizing this post, I found several cashmere options over $400.

That is stupid.

In all categories of clothing you reach a point where price has nothing to do with quality. Over the years brands and retailers have been living on another plant when it comes to what they are trying to charge women, especially for basics.

And don’t get me started on how their prices sky rocketed as their level of service sunk into the gutter.

Perhaps, I’m getting old and more conservative with my money (these are both true). I am, however, very willing to pay for things that will last, and even happier to pay for service and ease of transaction.

Everlane checks all those boxes. What I like the most about them, aside from their clean and modern design, is their prices are what they should be.

As a company, they focus on ethical manufacturing and transparent pricing.

High Quality, Fair Price

Everlane Cashmere Sweater

Sweater, $100  Available in 15 colors, in sizes XXS – XXL

The fact that this sweater is $100 is incredible. The cashmere is what is called “certified grade A” which is the highest quality you can get. It’s often touted as the reason for the high retail costs for other brands.

And, they source (ethically) from Mongolia, which, again, is the premier location that tends to drive up the base costs.

So what does this mean? Basically, you’re getting all the high designer talking points at a fair price.

Size-wise, I find Everlane, in general, runs true, and sometimes a little small. Be sure to check your measurements against their size guide.

This specific sweater has a relaxed fit, it shouldn’t cling to you, or feel oversized in any way. It’s not a super heavy sweater, this is a lightweight, thinner knit that you can wear all year long.
