6 Cute Sneakers to Update Your Stay at Home Outfits

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy Shoes

Sneakers started to have a moment even before the world hit the pause button a few months ago. Sartorially, we were seeing them paired with everything, from jeans to business suits.

Today, with our lives looking more casual than ever, a few novelty sneakers may be just the thing to breathe new life into our wardrobes, especially if you are like me and starting to miss the fun of getting dressed up.

So, I rounded up a few pairs that will jazz up your joggers, add a sporty balance to a feminine dress, or simply put some personality into a pair of jeans and a tee-shirt.

6 Cute Sneakers to Update Your Stay at Home Outfits

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy Shoes

There are a few things to remember as you create outfits around a pair of sneakers.

First, and most importantly, do not use your gym sneakers for this. Keep them for runs and workouts.

Second, balance is key. You want to use a sneaker with a slim profile. One that is too clunky will throw off the proportions.

Finally, don’t be afraid to use your sneaker to add some personality, much like a sandal or a pair of heels. Play with color, texture, and pattern. Have fun with it!

Below are some of my favorite options, including the pair I’m currently wearing on repeat.

My Top Pick: Subtle Leopard

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesLeopard, $69

I absolutely love these and wear them all the time. The pattern is subtle, so they work with almost everything. My wardrobe leans heavy in better basics, which can sometimes feel boring and redundant. These UP! the style factor of any ordinary outfit. You can buy them at DSW here with quick shipping.

Rainbow Trend

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesRainbow, $65

The rainbow trend is everywhere. We’re organizing our bookshelves, pantry, and even our fridges, by color, so of course, it’s creeping into fashion too. I love these sweet kicks by Gola for under $70. They add a cheerful optimism to any basic outfit.

Lux Detail

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesGold, $77

Kate Spade has made adorable sneakers for years and these are no exception. These are a great choice if you want to ease into the trend. The gold details elevates the sneaker without going overboard and you can wear them with absolutely everything.

Sporty Glam

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesWhite Sparkle
, $145

File these under, I don’t know who needs these sneakers, but someone does. They are so beautiful. I could see a bride hide them under her dress, or wear them to a city hall ceremony. They would also look pretty with a casual feminine dress, like a floral maxi or a simple pair of shorts with a pretty top.

Splurge Worthy

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesPink Stripe, $198

These are the most expensive option on this list, but I had to include them. They are so bright and cheerful. If your budget allows and they fit into your style, you’ll have these for a long time. They are the perfect combination of classic, preppy and pretty.

Everyday Style

6 Cute Sneakers to Wear if You Miss Fancy ShoesPink Accents, $80

Finally, these classic white and pink Lacoste sneakers are ideal for everyday wear. Wear them for walks, running errands, or take them on an upcoming road trip. If you don’t love the pink accents you can get them with black instead. Read their Five Star Reviews here

May 2020 Casual Outfit Capsule

May Capsule Wardrobe

One of the many things I’ve learned over the last few months is that I love getting dressed.

Don’t get me wrong, during this stay-at-home experience I’ve had more than my share of days where I look down at 3 pm and realize all I did was put a fleece over my pajamas.

But more often than not, getting up and getting dressed as made the difference between a miserable or great day.

Now that it’s Spring and orders are relaxing, let’s look to the future! While working from home is going to be the norm for some time, entertaining at home is going to surge too.

Many of us are excited to start to welcome friends and neighbors back into our homes and onto our patios for some much needed human interaction.

So today’s collection offers some relaxed yet polished looks for the coming weeks and beyond.

How Our Capsules Work

At the beginning of the season, I publish a cornerstone collection filled with size inclusive wardrobe basics. Specifically for this year, I focused on versatile stay-at-home appropriate pieces that you can easily transition back into normal life.

In the following months, I create smaller capsules meant to help expand those pieces and build out your options.

Within the content of these posts, please pay attention to the links and notes about size. If a featured piece is not available in all sizes, I make every effort to offer an alternative, but please remember I am limited to retailers and their inventory.

To help create a mix and match wardrobe, also reference pieces you picked up in April’s Collection so you can see how all of this builds.

Let’s jump in …

2020 May Casual Capsule Collection

May Capsule Wardrobe

Maybe it’s the color combinations, but this capsule feels so optimistic. I’m extra excited for the shoe options. Two of which are going to require an at home pedicure 😉

You can use this post one of two ways.

First, you can shop it. I recommend all of these pieces based off my experience as a stylist and personal shopper, AND my deep knowledge of our readership.

Or, you can use this as inspiration. Maybe you have similar pieces already in your closet and this gives you a push to try a new combination, or you’re simply motivated to get up and get dressed in something you love.

Either way, there is nothing but good intentions behind all of my posts.

All Dressed Up

May Capsule WardrobeDress, $75 (on sale $50)  |  Sneakers, $42  |  Earrings, $135

I have this dress from Banana Republic in “Sandy Beige Dot.” (You can see it here.) The yellow is limited, but worth highlighting. Either print is beautiful.

A dress is even more comfortable than sweats but looks and feels a 1000 x chicer. Give it a try this week and throw on any dress you may already have hanging in your closet. Banana is excellent for size range. This dress is available in missy, plus, and petite up to a size 20.

I’m showing it with sneakers so you can run in and out of the house, play with the kids, go for a walk, etc. I’m loving the look of these by Sam Edelman, on sale here.

The trick to pairing sneakers with a lightweight dress is to make sure the sneaker has a slim profile. If the shoe is too bulky, it will look off-balance. Whatever you do, not wear your white “gym” shoes – they are an entirely different animal.

Finally, adding a gorgeous earring can elevate your look and mood. I am becoming a big fan of Julie Vos Jewelry. Her pieces are the kind that you don’t see coming and going. They are also reasonably priced for the quality and craftsmanship.

If you need it, grab the denim jacket we featured last month

Better Than Pajamas

May Capsule WardrobeShorts, $20  |  Sweatshirt, $35  |  Slippers, $40  |  Earrings, $45

A few days ago on Instagram I took a poll to see who loved shorts, and who loathed them. To my surprise, the results were straight down the line. So if shorts aren’t your thing, you can easily replace these with the linen ankle pants we featured earlier this week, see post here.

For this outfit, I use an olive pair of pull on shorts from Old Navy. Olive is a fantastic neutral, but these come in six other colors. My second color choice would be the caramel, and for the preppy pop of color, the mango. They have a 4″ inseam and come in sizes XS – XXL.

Whenever I wear shorts, I always pair them with a 3/4 length or long sleeve top. That’s just me, it helps balance out my proportions. Otherwise, because I’m tall, I look like all arms and legs.

This sweatshirt from LOFT doesn’t show well in the image above, a better image is here. It’s lightweight, and has a flattering curved hem in the front. Available in missy, petite and plus sizes, in three colors.

It also pairs with these jegging jeans from our April Capsule, and these adorable leopard print sneakers

For this look, I kept it casual and realistic with these “spa” slippers, basically fuzzy flip flops, for under $40.

Then a simple pair of studs by Kendra Scott so you can hop on a Zoom call and look kind of professional.

At Home Nautical

May Capsule WardrobeShirt, $25  |  Jeans, $99  |  Sandal, $89  |   Earring, $58

I could not love this outfit more. I live for a striped shirt and this one from Everlane is only $25. I paired it with crips white jeans with a relaxed frayed hem. Next week I have a round up a white jeans (that aren’t see through – so stay tuned!).

These are under $100 from 7 for all Mankind. They are a mid rise, with sizing up to a 33. They run true, and remember, they might feel snug when you first try them on, but they will stretch.

For shoes, I went with another Sam Edelman, these are a neutral flat in the color saddle, for under $90. They go here, with the dress, with shorts – pretty much everything but leggings and sweats.

Finally, earrings. These chic white enamel hoops are comfortable enough to wear all day, so why not! I like them here, or with the dress in either color.

A Lightweight Pant Alternative To Shorts

A Lightweight alternative to shorts

I am a planner. My husband might call me a control freak – that’s fine too, I answer to both. Planning and figuring things out is how I cope with stress.

If I have a plan, or two (or three) then I am prepared, and everything will be okay.

As you can imagine, our current wait -and-see situation, is less than ideal for my personality.

The summer is, by far, my favorite time of year, but this one is going to be a little weird.

Our big trip to Greece to celebrate my birthday was postponed, and our shore house rental is currently closed. It’s hard to be bummed about it, given the real challenges facing the world.

But, as a family, we could all use something to look forward to, especially with all the doom and gloom in the news.

To lift our spirits, we came up with some alternative plans to enjoy the warmer weather, and get us out of this house the second virtual learning wraps up at the end of the month.

Yesterday, over in our Facebook Group, I asked our members their plans for the summer. I was so happy to hear that you are itching to get out again too (safely, of course), and there are many, many road trips planned for the summer.

Which means, we are going to need a few things to wear, AND we have to order them now because everything is taking longer these days. (Depending on the retailer, shipping is taking twice as long.)

So today I’m starting with a pair of lightweight linen pants to wear as an alternative to shorts.

* as a reminder, I will not publish a comment with any political tone to it from either side, this is a drama free zone .

Lightweight Shorts Alternative

Linen Pants from H&M

Linen Pants, $35

Here’s the deal. I love shorts. But after being stuck at home, with no gym access for three months, I’m probably NOT wearing them right away this summer.

As an alternative, I picked up these linen ankle pants from H&M. There are running low on inventory, but as I write this they still have enough to make it worth a post.

They are under $40 and come in sizes  0 – 18. Generally they run true to size, but be sure to look at and compare your measurements. I bought the navy and the blue and white stripe. I’m also on the waitlist for the khaki green (olive).

I don’t always love linen, but in a dark color you can pull it off without looking like an unmade bed. Avoid the white and beige option -they will be see through, and messy.

We’ll all likely be working from home this summer, so these are ideal for those days. But I’m wearing them instead of shorts for our first trip to the beach in June.

How to Wear It

A Lightweight alternative to shortsLinen Pants, $35  |  Flip Flop, $198  |  Eyelet Top, $54.50 (on sale $33)  |  Hoops, $58.50

For a casual dinner, outside, with a breeze – I am so ready for a normal summer night.

Above, I used the dark navy option to create a classic combination. This lovely eyelet top is an immediate add-to-cart. It’s on sale for $33 in missy and plus up to a size 20. You can wear it with a these pants, with a little half tuck, or with a pretty skirt to add some texture.

The sandals, by Tory Burch, are a splurge. I love them, they go with everything and help elevate a basic look. If you picked up her “Patos Disk” sandal last year (a 2019 Reader Favorite) they work perfectly here too.

Finally, a sweet pair of hoops (under $60) with a white enamel accent, bring a fresh, modern vibe to the outfit.

Fingers crossed that everyone gets a much needed break this summer – and for continued health and healing over the coming weeks! xxoo

5 Maxi Dresses to Wear Now and Later

5 Five Maxi Dresses For Now and Later

Our Private Facebook Group is a gift. At almost 3,000 members strong, it’s a treasure trove of ideas and inspiration to help me come up with specific posts that serve our ever growing audience on a daily basis.

One question, posted a few days ago, was about maxi dresses.

So, how is everyone feeling about maxi length skirts or dresses? Are they over or about to have a new moment?

And the consensus was pretty unanimous – we love them!

Of course, not every style is for every person, so I was surprised and delighted to read such enthusiasm.

Based on that question, and the comments that followed, I thought it would be helpful to share a few options that you can wear right now and then later, along with some “best practice” tips.

So let’s start there.

Maxi length dresses are everywhere. Formal, casual, swim coverups … you have your pick!

But for today’s post, I had a few requirements.

First, you have to be able to wear a regular bra. None of this strapless nonsense while we’re social distancing at home. And no funky cut outs, or backless details.

Now is not the time 😉

Second, length is always an issue.  So I made sure to include petite options (you still might need to have it hemmed), a few that will work if you are tall, and some that will hit right below your calf, so no matter your height, you’re covered.

I ordered two of these and will share pictures over on Instagram when it warms up – it’s still a little chilly on the East Coast.

Finally, the prices on most of these are insanely good.

From left to right: V-Neck Jersey, $35 | Solid Tiered, $68 (take 30% off for under $50) | Soft Satin, $119| Floral Tiered, $35| Short-Sleeved Jersey, $25

Maxi dresses are nice alternatives to the leggings/joggers/jeans that we’ve all been living in.  Now that the weather in many of our towns is getting warmer, having one or two of these on hand will help break up how mundane many of our wardrobes are feeling.

Outside of staying at home, these are lovely, breezy pieces to wear to the beach, a casual dinner, or an night with friends (remember them??).

I like them as an alternative to shorts or short dresses and, as a bonus, they help you instantly feel more feminine. I don’t know about you, but I could benefit from feeling normal, and pretty right about now.

This affordable dress is flattering, comes in five colors including this pretty pink above. It’s available in petite and regular from and XS – XL.

Megan’s Pick!

I absolutely love this simple tiered dress. It’s available in for colors in sizes XXS – 3X. Pair it with flip flops around the house and then flat sandals when we get back out and moving.

5 Maxi Dresses to Wear Now and LaterSoft Satin, $119

A high low hem adds just a wink of drama to your look. Throw this on at home for a date night on the deck, and then add a strappy sandal, pile on some bracelets and grab a wrap for real date night in the summer.

5 Maxi Dresses to Wear Now and LaterFloral Tiered, $35

Megan’s Pick!

Bright, cheerful, and only $35. You can’t feel down in this dress so I put it directly in my shopping cart.  Again, wear it now with flip flops, take it out on a neighborhood stroll, and then wear it for a night out with friends this summer. Available in 00 – 20.

5 Maxi Dresses to Wear Now and LaterShort-Sleeved Jersey, $25

Like a sweatsuit, only not, and maybe better. You can curl up on your sofa, watch a movie, and play with the kids but look and feel a little more pulled together.

Wear it now with whatever you like, flip flops, slippers – who cares! But later add a sweet pair of sneakers and a denim jacket. Available in XS – XL.

And, don’t forget about this short sleeve tee shirt maxi I featured a few weeks ago – it’s long (I’m just shy of 5’10) and is getting lots of wear right now.

The Tie Dye Trend For Grown Ups

Tie Dye Trend for Adults

I thought it would be fun to try some trends outside my wheelhouse over the next few weeks, while we’re staying home, and highlight them here.

Maybe we’ll discover a few updates we can wear when we’re out and about this summer that we would otherwise have skipped right over.

I’m starting with tie-dye.

Somehow, for reasons far beyond anything I can understand, a global shut down created a massive trend in tie-dye. From sweatsuits and pajamas, to spring dresses, and even hair accessories.

It’s everywhere and much of it is really expensive, like hundreds of dollars for a tie-dyed sweatshirt. This is where retail loses me. Something you can make in your bathroom is sold for $400.

I always say, price isn’t a single guidepost for quality. Somethings are worth a higher cost, some aren’t.

Generally, tie-dye doesn’t exactly fit into my style. So I’m starting with this subtle, “grown-up” tie-dyed sweatshirt for around $20 – a price that seems reasonable.

Tie-Dye for Grown Ups

Tie Dye Trend for AdultsSweatshirt, $30 ($21 with code HURRY)

Technically this isn’t tie-dyed. It’s ombre or dip-dyed, which seems like a better translation of the trend to wear now at home and later in the summer.

These days I’m wearing it at home, with distressed jeans. In the summer, it will look cute with white bottoms, like shorts or relaxed ankle jeans at the beach. I like it because it’s lightweight, similar to the LOFT sweatshirt many of you picked up earlier this month.

Old Navy continues it’s epic series of sales. Today, this shirt is marked down to $21 when you use the code HURRY.

I have it in the pink (see below). It runs true, I’m wearing a medium.

My Favorite Pajamas and Our First Book Club Meeting!

My Favorite Pajamas

Given the state of the world, my family is managing well. We’re lucky; we have space, resources, and sunshine – thank goodness for sunshine!

Though, it’s safe to say, we’re all feeling worn out.

Who isn’t?

As much as I try to keep us organized and on a regular schedule, by 6 pm, the wheels are off the bus, and waves of overwhelm start to wash over me.

Keeping up with work, homeschool, and taking care of the baby – all at once, feels impossible. We’re all missing our friends and, personally, I missing that feeling of hope that comes with having events on the calendar to look forward to.

It’s why I refuse to refer this as “the new normal,” because non of this is normal.

Once I get the baby to bed, and the big girls settle into their night, I go through a few simple steps to feel like myself.

I use my nighttime routine to help me attempt to decompress from the day, and give me a minute to catch my breath and calm my mind.

First, after the kitchen is cleaned up from dinner, I light a candle on the island. It makes the house feel homey and safe.

Then, I spend a few minutes going through my nighttime skincare routine.  It only takes about 10 – 15 minutes, and I savor the quiet.

Finally I change into pajamas. I LOVE a proper pair of pajamas. They not only feel cozy, but they help mark the end of the day, which is so important since it’s too easy for the day to never end right now.

My absolute favorite pair come from J.Crew Factory (below). Today, they are 50% off with an additional 10% off with the code WFH.

I’m wearing a medium, they run true to size. Their size scale is so great, starting at an XXS and going to a 3X.

My Favorite Pajamas On Sale!

My Favorite Pajamas

I still spend a good amount of my evening catching up on work. I actually enjoy feeling productive at night, since it’s the only time I can really hear myself think or move a project forward.

A long time ago I learned not to work in bed. So once I close my computer, no matter how late at night, I read a little in bed to help get my mind off everything.

This month, I launched our first Virtual Book Club

Evvie Drake Starts Over

Speaking of things to look forward to, we’re meeting up in our Private Facebook Group this weekend!

If you read the book, grab a glass of wine, or cup of tea, put on your favorite pajamas and let’s chat THIS SUNDAY, at 7 pm EST.

Classic White Button Down for $20

Classic White Button Down for $20

Ever since I was a young girl, I loved the look of a classic white button down. I remember seeing Carolina Herrera for the first time on T.V., gracefully walking out from behind the curtain of one of her fashion shows, in her tailored black pants and perfect white shirt.

I never saw anyone so elegant.

She immediately became my north star of style.

The vision stayed in my head my whole life, and I dipped in and out of the look through my 20’s and early 30’s. But it’s only been over the last few years that I’ve felt “grown-up” enough to feel totally comfortable in it.

These days, having a few simple outfit combinations, that feel polished but not overdone, has really helped me stay productive while managing work and the current chaos of home life.

Classic White Shirt

Classic White Button Down for $20

Classic White Button Down, $21

For a long time I opted for a super fitted style – I was so cute, but those days, sadly, are over.

Today, I’m all about a classic cut, not boxy, not overly fitted. And I don’t want to spend a small fortune. A white button down is a lot like a white tee shirt – there’s no rhyme or reason to pricing and quality is rarely reflected in the cost.

In my pursuit of a shirt that fits well, and works for my budget and lifestyle, I tried dozens of brands. Imagine my surprise and delighted, when out everything, the one I like the most came from Amazon Essentials for $21.00.

I’m wearing the medium, it runs true, with sizing starting at XS – XXL.

It’s not sheer, the fit is great and it washes well.

I picked up several so I always have some on hand. Here, I paired it with a pair of dark skinny jeans. Of course, you can wear them with a straight leg for the same look. And I’m wearing my favorite Rothy’s that have turned into a slipper alternative.

General Fit and Care

Remember, not all pieces work universally. Button downs are tricky for many when it comes to fit. If you have a full bust, it’s not always worth the alterations you would need to do to get the fit right. (It usually involves sizing up and altering down, or having something custom made.)

But if they work for you, they can be a polished and ladylike staple in your classic wardrobe.

I wear mine half tucked in the front – a trick that actually helps hid your midsection. Doing so creates a chic, casual vibe, like you’re Diane Keaton in any move she’s ever been in.

What’s the best way to keep them white? Well, Carolina Herrera herself once said, “A bar of dove soap and warm water.” Which works, beautiful. Just scrub around the color, cuff, and under the arms to keep them from turning yellow, and throw it in the dryer on low.

Other Options

Brooks Brothers fitted no-iron shirt is a go to. Available in missy and petite in sizes 0 – 16. Currently 30% off.
