You can always tell my level of overwhelm by what is going with the blog.  Today’s post is late because I’ve been in San Francisco for work since Wednesday, and for some reason, I cannot get my footing. Jet lag is never usually a problem, but this trip my clock is still on the east coast.  I’m falling asleep at 8 pm and waking up at 4 am.  I’ve been sleep-walking all day long. The good news is that tonight’s red-eye is my last flight of the year.

The holidays are a special time of year.  For me, it means taking a big step back from our crazy schedule and spending time with the people I love the most.  I often feel like I have to be “on” in my professional life.  I try to be myself all the time, but I can’t help but feel some pressure to live up to a certain standard and always be hustling, always be working, so this time of year I feel like I get a break to regroup. I savor these weeks of spending good quality time with my kids, squeezing in some date nights with my husband (who is also off the road until 2018) and having low-key get-togethers with friends and neighbors. I can’t wait.

With a calendar full of events, I love a few new pieces that feel special. It doesn’t have to be too complicated or overdone.  Instead, some classic styles in elevated fabrics combined with interesting accessories are my favorite way of dressing.  That’s why something like a faux leather legging can be an impactful piece to breath new life to what you may already have.

For today’s Weekend Inspiration, I kept it chic and simple.  Because leggings (featured yesterday) aren’t pants, you want to wear something that covers your bum. But, it doesn’t have to be huge or oversized.  This Halogen sweater from Nordstrom is ideal.  It’s long, but not too long with a slightly longer hem in the back.  It comes in an array of wearable colors. I went with ivory because I like the contrast of black and white.  The bell sleeve with tie detail takes it from simple sweater to holiday staple and it’s under $60.

You could go two ways with the shoes.  One option is a suede pump.  We’ve featured these Sam Edelmans all season as they are  fantastic option. You could also wear an ankle boot like we featured above.  You want to find a pair that is sleek rather than chunky. Surprisingly, a slim, pencil heeled ankle boot isn’t easy to find.   I do like these stiletto ankle boots from Marks & Spencer, though they may be more of a “sitting down shoe.” Be sure that the bottom of your legging fits in the boot.

Finally, I used silver tone accessories because the heel of the ankle boot has a silver tip.  Remember, matching your metals brings your look together.  I found an inexpensive long necklace that adds movement, holiday-ready studs by Kate Spade and a crushed velvet clutch that brings in some more texture for more depth and interest.

I’m excited to get home early on Saturday, grab a quick nap and run the kids to some birthday parties. One of our favorite babysitters is home from college for Thanksgiving and asked if she could watch the girls, so Bri and I are sneaking in quick dinner out.
