Wear it to Work: WHBM Stripe Poplin Tie-Front Shirt
Clients regularly remind me what a great option White House Black Market is for better-priced basics with a little twist. And this classically inspired button down has a literal twist in the front. (Available up to a size 14, Lane Bryant has a similar option up to a size 22.) Before we dive into the outfits, I have some strong opinions (shocking) about how to wear a button down. You have to zush it up! Fold and push up your sleeves, and, yes, pop that collar. Also, consider having the shirt tail hemmed to hit you at the right place. While you want this shirt to be longer than a traditional menswear shirt, if it’s too long it will cut off your leg and throw off your proportions. When I see someone in an oversized button down I immediately think of Tom Hanks at the end of Big. You don’t want that.
Of all our recent Wear to Work key pieces, this shirt is the most limited. But, what you’ll lack in versatility, you’ll gain with wearability.
For our first look, I went classically chic with a few lux accessories and couldn’t be happier with how it came out. Because the shirt is like a tunic, skip a wide leg and opt instead for a slim or straight leg pant. I like these navy pants from Banana Republic. With a slim, casual pant like these, pair them with a kitten heel, or other smaller heel. Remember, being well dressed is all about the nuanced details. I used these J Crew heels that many of you picked up last week in a gorgeous dark navy suede.
Let me tell you how much I love these accessories. The shirt practically screams for a pearl necklace and this simple faux version is under $50. These starburst earrings with pearl center keeps the modern feel and plays off the edge of the shirt. Finally, those who know me well know I love a monogram. I’m dying for this gorgeous Gigi New York bag. It’s not practical, but sometimes that’s okay. If it’s not for you replace it with your favorite navy or tan bag.
You don’t have to compromise comfort for style, especially on long flights. I run into people all the time at airports, so I know first hand that not looking like death is important. I like these KUT from the Kloth skinny jeans when traveling. They have lots of stretch, sit higher on the waist, and basically feel like leggings. A simple pair of affordable hoops with a tiny pearl detail are all you need for jewelry. Round out the look with travel essentials, like this Longchamp bag in a go with everything tan. and a practical flat. I found these pretty scalloped flats that mimic the feminine feel of the shirt. They are currently 50% off at Nordstrom and available in four wearable colors.
