High vs. Low: Backless Leopard Loafer

Backless Leopard Loafer

High, $295; Low: $60

In the coming weeks, as fall starts to fill the stores, you will see lots of backless loafer options. They will be available in any color, material, and style. The most popular will be an updated animal print. If you have a classic wardrobe, this style is a seamless way to add a modern twist to your look.  Personally, I love them. They give just a little bit of masculine style, are professional and comfortable for your long days in the office.

I would style these with a black ankle pant in either a full or straight leg, with a crisp white button down or a fitted black top for work.  They also quickly go casual with a loose fitting pair of boyfriend jeans and a simple sweater.   There will be many versions of these so pay attention to the subtle nuances of the style.  First, maintain the loafer feel with a proper heel. Some styles currently available look more like a slipper. The slipper style is fine, but you’ll lose the polish you may want for the office.

Also, pay close attention to the print, because some animal prints look sophisticated and others look cheap, regardless of the price. Your best bet is to go with a leopard print, instead of a cheetah, and make sure that the colors are muted and work back to black.

Now, would I spend on these? No. You won’t wear them enough, though if you make a smart selection, you could wear these for a few seasons and get your money’s worth. This High/Low post is an excellent example of not having to compromise style for price. So many times, I find something PERFECT, and it’s a small fortune, but now and then I find something that has high-end details for a fraction of the price. That’s’ the case with these backless loafers from Boden. The only thing that separates them from their high priced equivalent is the gold buckle hardware. I prefer a shoe (or a bag) that doesn’t have any hardware, so you’re not tied to that metal color throughout your outfit.
